So as a writer of short stories I can imagine a hole in another writers schemes or an RPG players games (although to the latter I wouldn’t know) that result from “Writers Block.” so if it could be referenced in the future please write your methods (not ideas or story partials but methods) of coming up with stories. These are my methods for stories and ideas…
1. Taping– A method I probably didn’t invent but I have named. Here’s how to Tape. First come up with a character (something usually underdeveloped in Lovecraft’s lore) like say . . . . . .
Silver John.
Silver John was a character based on Johnny Cash that was both a veteran of the Korean war and an expert of Ozark folklore and cult practices of the south.
He was a homeless drifter and of the Loner Hero Archetype and in the book “The Elder Gods Awaken” he encounters Raven Mockers. A Cherokee witch that can transform into a being similar to a Shadow Person that caws like a raven. In human form it resembles an elderly or downtrodden woman that lies mourning and weeping but if startled will attack. Now there’s an entity I’ld like to see (esp. since I am a southerner)
But we can’t steal the whole Idea so let’s borrow another Concept.
Jerusalem’s lot, Silent Hill, The Hitch Hiker TV series and The Willows.
Jerusalem’s’ Lot by Stephan King was a small town (I think) where an inbreed cult follow the orders of an old man dedicated to finding the “Mysterries De Vermiis” a lovecraftian arcane literature piece from the Fallen Church that he’s afraid to enter. I like this story despite it’s prejudiced view of the south and it’s inbreeding. It’s not our sisters we’re after down here, It’s our cousins. But all joking aside let’s look at the second concept, silent hill.
In the video game silent hill you wind up in a town where the other-worlds bleed through. You take the drifting narrator of The Hitch Hiker and through in the strangeness of Algernon Blackwood’s The Willows and while we’re at it a little of Robert Bloch’s “Notebook found in a deserted house” and changing the names, descriptions, and appearances of the concepts taken you have the following.
____________________________________________________________
A southern drifter and veteran of the mythos and delta green is drifting along the Highway when he finds himself being picked up by a trucker. After the trucker is killed in the following accident, the drifter finds himself in a strange 50’s ghost town where he finds the abandoned notebook of a twelve year old boy that tells the story of what happened to the town, albeit from a child’s perspective.
While seeking to solve the riddle himself he encounters Raven Mockers, A strange cult worshiping (and sacrificing to) the strange trees in the town, the cross roads of worlds (From The Willows) as he is being watched by the terrible eyes of sentient trees (could be a Shub-Niggurath tie in there), and another alternate realm of mist (Silent Hill) and eventually . . .
Well you could let me know if you’ld like to hear that story, otherwise I won’t make you sit through it.
Do PLEASE comment on your own methods for CREATING story ideas or if you think the story above was good enough for me to write an extension on.
Hmm… that actually sounds to me a lot like what I do need to come up with something. I have to admit I tend to use a lot of the DG literature as well, specially from Dark Theatres and Alien Intelligence. I, for one, would like to see how you plan to continue with your story seed. I am not too keen on the 50s ghost town unless the story starts in the 50s too. I’ts been long since I played Silent Hill but, unless I am horribly wrong, the “shadow” version of town was still the normal one but more rusty, darker and “aged”. I believe that if you make the town look like from 50 years ago you are giving the player (or reader) the impression to be in a totally different place rather than a “wrong” version of its current self
I took my sweet time replying this but yeah I see your point with the whole 50’s town thing.
Also if you really need a good story seed (And you tend to be up at 1 AM a lot)
You could listen to Coast to Coast am. Just type that on the search engine and it should take you to it’s main site, then go to stations and you should find one near you.
Theres a lot of crazy, weird stuff on that show but it isn’t as fun as when ol’ Art Bell ran the thing…
Also I really wouldn’t know a damned thing about the RPG’s as I’m not really a (I don’t mean this offensive) nerd.
Nothing against nerds I actually know a lot of them and they can actually be cool guy and I tend to share interests with them up to a point but as far as “Fantasy” goes I prefer actual history, I like comics but so do most teens, I got involved in this when I got this trading card through
via junk mail with a creature called “Cthulhu” when I was 9.
I thought “Whoa, having aliens to be giant monsters instead of the wimpy little greys is genius!”
And I looked up the cthulhu book on Amazon, bought one and recognized the name Robert Bloch in it….
He turned out to be a distant cousin! Thats how I got to looking online and found this site but if I could just ask.
“Where can I publish other works in the cthulhu mythos? Surely,
Somewhere I can publish a story OUTSIDE the barriers of Delta Green
It’s a great concept but tying everything into it starts to feel like re-runs of
Kolchak or The X-Files, I’d still use this the majority of the time, But it can be
Restraining, are there other sites like this? I’m not an RPG player so I woldn’t
know where to look. Please Respond if you or Shane or anyone else knows.
Hey look at my last comment . . . It’s so lengthy! . . . I Built a wall! C:
