I've just subscribed to this list and in the past few days have really enjoyed what I've read. I've used DG a little at the time it was released and due to diverging paths with my friends had stopped using it for months. I'm taking again now that my work is almost over. I'm just finishing the french text for the french edition of DG. I've dogged the guy line-editor for the french edition of Call of Cthulhu for months telling him he should check the Pagan stuff for new items for the french ine and finally he did and offered me the opportunity for the translation. My new players have just finished creating their cell members and I plan to run "Puppets...." starting wednesday evening. And already the contributions to this list have triggered new ideas for me. I don't know how long the list has been on, and how much I've missed. Would someone have archived the messages ? For my part, I'm from Birmingham, AL, and lived in Sacramento for about ten years and in New York City for three (1993-1996). As you can imagine, of the three New York is by far the more interesting setting for Delta Green, and I have no less than five scenarios in the works featuring the Big Apple. It has the largest FBI field office (1000 of the Bureau's 10,000 agents are in New York), major international presence and therefore intelligence presence, military bases, and universities to hold collections of esoteric and properly dangerous books... and then there's Club Apocalypse. So, my campaign describes the formation of "M" cell, to be located in New York City. Cell leader will be MEREDITH, a senior Assistant U.S. Attorney, First District, New York. If anyone runs agents through NYC and wants a little "color", let me know and I'll fill you in on what M Cell has suffered... I mean, accomplished... The first NYC excursions of M cell should run within the next month. Now, one thing I'd like to know: does anyone on this list know Washington, DC very well?? However, there's something I would prefer over regional information, which I figure I can either find in reference books or confabulate. I'd like to hear some ideas for alien artifacts. So far, the only examples that I can think of are the lightning guns of the Yithians, the armour-webs and mist-projectors of the Mi-go from my copy of the CoC rulebook and the electric-guns from the DG sourcebook. The armour-webs and electric-guns are so cool because of their detrimental effects on users. What's really irritating is that I hear for the CoC 5.5th edition they've put in some of this stuff. Of course, any information from there couldn't be shared because of copyright infringement, but some disinformation might be nice... As for locale information, I live in Ontario and go to school in Quebec, and I do have some not-even-close-to-fleshed-out ideas for DG ops across the border. (Operatives masquerading as RCMP, etc.) Final note, K-Cell's moniker Special K is the best! My group is headed up by Agent Ophelia, along with some Friendlies, and since they're more academic than field operative and slightly prone to insanity, I think I'll have them jokingly referred to as Cell-O's Jello group. Vaguely reminds me of an idea I once had, that even if you ran Uncle Abdul's Big Forbidden Book O' Fun through your basic high-grade photocopier (or pagescanner), you'd not get the actual benefits/costs of the copy due to there being essentially no POW invested in it. At best, you'd get ungodly powerful rituals and commentary without any of the intrinsic "protection" that a hand-copyist would pour into it in the process of carefully transferring ink (or other fluid ) to paper (as for ink). The copying process also will have unintended effects on diagrams and illustrations, like the Elder Sign. Even if it is a simple process to draw up the ES, it's got to be done in a certain order; the "all at once" method will, at least, fail. (Dunno if I'd go farther, myself.) The Yellow Signs in TELL ME, HAVE YOU SEEN THE YELLOW SIGN? are "powered" specifically, not just churned out on a press. (This would explain the failures of the Simon, et al., Necronomicon. "Damnit, Nyalrathotep, there's another poseur calling. Make an *example* of this one. What? You *have* been? Well, make a *spectacle* of this one, then, I'm getting tired of this crap." ) The "glove cleaners" of TUO #14/15 put a "little bit of themselves" into their work, so those would be more useful. (Just to be perverse about it. "It's just a photocopy, it won't work." <*FWUFF*> "AIEEE!") Why would the printed works work at all? Well, it's another "glove cleaner"-type action. That strange old man who mumbled to himself but was the best typesetter at Golden Goblin? ("Hmmm. What happened to him?" "He was devoured by an invisible demon!" "Jeez, Dave, quit drinking the paint-thinner, all right?") The fickle finger of Fate (Nyarlathotep pops up. "Present.") might also come into play. Out of umpteen thousand Simon Necs, maybe one or two were *usable* copies? It might get a little much to deal with, and can be vicious to inflict upon innocent PCs. (Nylari spits coffee all over his monitor. "You *are* a smartass. Innocent PCs... ") But, it does make Eldritch Tomes more of a problem than "Okay, Mindy, you and Frank get that stack of books to Kinkos! Me and Harry and Linda will finish off the cultists and burn the warehouse!" So it went off-topic some, so what? Not precisely DG, but more applicable for the modern-era stuff than the '20s, much less Gaslight. Me and Harry and Linda will finish off the >cultists and burn the warehouse!" I'm a bit confused by all this. First, why do you have to have a mystical explanation for the tome's changing? You can have smudged words, get the pages in the wrong order (collation can be a bitch), a crucial page could be skipped, and so forth. These problems might not come up often, but that just makes them more memorable. Of course, all this is assuming that the characters are willing to place their rare and valuable tome at the mercies of a photocopier... Second, what's wrong with letting characters have multiple copies of the same tome? The more copies, the more people go insane, and the more likely that the characters will get careless and allow a copy to fall into the wrong hands. In fact, a good and plausible scenario might involve the appearance of a pamphlet/web page containing a Mythos- related tome or spell and its aftermath. If that isn't bad enough, think of how the characters would feel if it were the result of their neglect! Ha ha ha -- er, that would be a smashing good game. As great as the sourcebook is for conveying the proper mood and feel of the setting, the short stories (and poem, diary, and novella!) collected herein really serve to bring the world of DG to life. Some of the material presented is very explicit in terms of revealing secrets of which not everyone need/should/might be aware. And there's the fact that in Call of Cthulhu the protagonists are basically helpless against the forces they encounter. Sure, Delta Green can blow up cultists real good... but that won't matter a lick when a Shoggoth comes calling; let alone an Outer God or three. In the White Wolf games, as in Kult, GURPS Voodoo, Nephilim, et al, the protagonists are never "mere" humans, but supercharged in some way so they can face their enemies. I think someone a couple of years ago used that fact to distinguish Call of Cthulhu, a "horror" game, from the rest of the "fear" or terror games. So, mixing other supernatural elements should be handled carefully if you want to maintain the sense of despair that is integral to Call of Cthulhu. That's why I first didn't care for the idea of mixing White Wolf with the Cthulhu mythos. On the other hand, though, those elements could be used to ENHANCE the sense of nihilism and despair in a campaign: present the Wyrm/Wyld/Gaia/etc. mythology as a belief system that supernaturally-affected creatures subscribe to, but eventually hint that it, too, is merely a hollow denial of the truth. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Apr 1998 20:33:39 EDT From: Croaker Jr Subject: Re: DG: Alien Artifacts In a message dated 98-04-14 17:29:58 EDT, sparks@po-box.mcgill.ca (Stephen Parks) wrote: << P.S. I believe the NRO was officially declassified back in 1994, around the time they built a big new headquarters and couldn't keep secret who it was for. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Apr 1998 20:58:59 -0400 From: Tal Meta Subject: Re: DG: Info Exchange Croaker Jr wrote: > > On White Wolf mythos vs. Cthulhu Mythos: > My first reaction to this idea was negative; the essential theme of the > Cthulhu Mythos is nihilism, the fact that all the patterns (occultism, > religion, philosophy, science) that we try to use to explain the cosmos are > invariably mere attempts to evade the true meaninglessness and futility of it > all. Unrelated to DG/CoC, but alot of the world background for Mage translated well into Nephilim... makes the whole 'history is a lie, science is an illusion' blurb make some kind of sense. What I have been considering doing though is a DG/Neph crossover, ala "Fallen". where the heroes off a member of say, Karotechnica, only to discover that he doesn't die, but keeps hopping from body to body. (Devil Arcanum Neph, of course). Would make for an interesting story arc... - -- talmeta@bellatlantic.net - I *am* one of the Chosen Few! Subject: DG: 'L Cell' yeah ok: Agent "Lynn" A dumpy woman in her early thirties. She has mousy, lank brown hair, and her hazel eyes are always slightly pink from the contact lenses she forgets to clean. She is a bit heavy set for her height, but it would be hard to tell because she contiually wears loose fitting dark sack like dressess and sweaters. She stands 5'4" and weighs 143lbs. "Lynn" Name: Sandy Pikonen Occupation: Environmental Scientists - EPA Sex: Female Age: 33 Nationality: American of Finnish descent Affiliation: Delta Green Schools & Degrees: Doctorate of Biochemistry, University of Colorado Str:8 Dex:10 Int:15 Magic Points: 7 Con:13 App:9 Pow:7 Siz:12 San:30/90Edu:17 Hit Points:12 Idea:75% Luck:35% Know:85% Damage Bonus: None Skills: Art-Drawing 70% Biology 88% Botany 70% Chemistry 82% Computer Use 42% Credit Rating 20% Cthulhu Mythos 9% Geology 25% Law 25% Library Use 45% Mathematics 35% Medicine 40% Natural History 45% Latin 55% English (own) 85% Pharmacy 65% Physics 25% Zoology 35% Sandy Pikonen was always more comfortable in a lab then anywhere else. She had a deep love of ideas and appreciation for nature that precluded much else in her life. This earned her some ridicule from her peers growing up and her high school years were a pretty lonely affair. She graduated early and went to college to get away from the teenage social games. It was in college though that she finally found a group that she really felt she could mesh with, a group of radical wanna-be ecoterrorists took the budding young scientist into their fold and Sandy at last felt she fit in somewhere. Sandy was torn between her studies and a desire to throw herself more fervently towards "the cause". She engaged in a number of illegal sabotauge runs with the other members of the group, until one night, when trying to damage some pieces of highway machinery one of the group set of a large fertilizer bomb, killing himself and severly injuring one of the other group. Sandy fled, and with dilligent lying was able to avoid any legal entaglements. (An example of the horrible luck that has haunted her most of her life, and also very damaging to her young psyche). She through herself into her studies after this, graduating at the top of her class. After drifting for a bit she took a job with the EPA, hoping to legally accomplish what she almost was arrested for four years previous. She was a serious worker, but a bit distant from her peers. This distance was to her advantage, when she discovered a member of the agency was covering for a local industrialist. She detected the firm was deliberatly releasing a strange biological agent (bits of suggoth tissue, isolated) into the water supply of a small town. Her investigations revealed a conspiracy within the EPA to cover this event up. She was put into the witness protection program for a brief time and was the target of at least one assassination attempt. With time the criminals were found and tried and Pikonen was allowed to return to her job. She had attracted the attention of more then criminals and cultists though and within six months was contacted by members of Delta Green. After being shown corroberating evidence of a similar 'event' to the water table infection in another small midwestern town Sandy was convinced and discovered, at long last another cause with which she could apply herself, feel like she belonged and also, had an air of mystery. She is a deligent researcher but intensly dislikes violence and refuses to go on outings that will lead to it. She does not carry a weapon of any sort. None the less, she is an incredible source of scientific knowledge but must be dealt with a bit cautiously, she's known to have the occasional break down. - -Matt C + | + Matt Cowger - Tenebrae@Earthling.net ICQ UIN:5409084 Cam #:9607-020 http://home.gvi.net/~tenebrae + | + ------------------------------ End of deltagreen-digest V1 #4 ******************************
