When the stars are right, everything goes to > shit, believe in it or not. I think that Mage could potentially benefit the most from some judicious use of DG material. One way to look at it is this: I have played in some Mage games where it seemed that _everything_ was supernatural (well, this is a general complaint about the way some people run most WoD games, but I'll save that for a differnet mailing list). At some point, if you have a group of Mage players (or, I would suggest, a mixed group of Mages and their more Mundane retainers) in a carefully crafted setting where Mages are rare and the Shadow war is just that, Introducing the Mythos can be a harrowing and humbling experience. Another thing to condier is this; Mages _try_ to shape the beliefs of humanity but occasionally fail miserably. Loof at the mere existence of werewolves and vampires as proof of this, and the fact that their powers cause no paradox as further proof; humanity _wants_ to believe in magic, it is hardwired into our brains, it is part of how we operate. The Technocracy cannot, even though they can sway the minds of potentially billions of people, cause the vampires to cease to exist. Now, think about this on the level of the Mythos. The Mythos exists, just like werewolves or vampires. At some base level, humanity might even _want to believe_ in these dark forces over which they have no control. The Mythos exists, and nothing any mere Mage can do will ever _cause it to cease to exist_. The best they can do is fight it at every turn. Worse yet, some Mages are so twisted that they want to increase the power of the Mythos, going so far as to use their powers to _make the stars come right_ and destroy humanity utterly. They will sawy humanity to worship these beings, to give their power to them, to make the world a more hellish place and urge the stars to rightness and generally make a Delta Green agents life hell. Now, if you were a DG operative, and realized that Mage A, for example let us say a Nephandus, might only be matched by Mage B, on the other hand let us say a Technocratic Void Engineer, you might be tempted to ally with B just to see A in hell. If, from a Mage standpoint, you think you are a King of Relaity, to suddenly realize that their are forces over which you, as a shaper of _humanities_ will, have no control over, you can be, shall we say, humbled. To put it more succinctly, Mage doesn;t have to be run as a shiny, happy game where the players can make a difference in the fast approaching darkness. Mage can be run as a game where the best that the characters can hope for is to hold off the forces of darkness by wielding their powers as best they can. Exactly like a DG game, in my opinion. And if your Technocratic player charaters suddenly discover that their is a conspiracy dealing with beings from _beyond_ right in their own back yard, they might realize that Vampires, werewolves, and other "reality deviants" are the least of their worries when their own flock, humanity, is dealing with corruption on a scale so grand. In short, I think that Mage and DG can benefit from one another in certain campaign types. YMMV. Cards 18 April 1998 As I remember it, a SS#'s first three digits correspond to the individual's state of residence and location within that state. . There are two specific three digit sequences that are exceptions. One was formerly used for employees of railroad companies. The other was used on example cards in wallets from some leather-goods manufacturer. Supposedly, this caused quite a bit of confusion; some owners of these wallets used this number as their own. The last four digits are used to record cards issued from a given source in a calendar year. E.g., nnn-nn-4656 is the forty-six hundred and fity-sixth card issued from the St. Dismal office of the Social Security Administration in West Dakota. I've forgotten what the middle two digits represent. The above information comes from my memory of a book about private investigators in the "Howdunit" series from Writer's Digest Books. Their phone number is (800) 289-0963 Some American states use SS# as driver's license numbers. Missouri does, at least. SS# are now issued at birth; this was untrue until just a few years ago. Supposedly this was done to make identity document fraud harder. In fact, just a little editorial work (name-changing, mainly) would turn GURPS Reign of Steel into a sourcebook for role-playing after the stars come right. For those who don't know, GURPS Reign of Steel is set in the mid-21st century after humanity's near extermination by a cabal of Artifical Intelligences. Earth and near-Earth space have been carved up into kingdoms by the machines. Middle North America is ruled by an AI devoted to biological-cybernetic hybridization. Australia's overlord is devoted to fringe science. (One of its projects ate New Zealand.) The Central American AI exterminated all life above the microbial level and replaced it with a weird machine ecology. Humanity's place in a decaying and now-foreign environment is subordinate, at best. Some AIs see mankind as a useful tool, but most are hostile or indifferent. Thirty-one million rats are still only rats, so to speak. There are some human collaborators with the machines, both willing and otherwise. Like the Mythos, the AIs are incomprehensible and unstoppable. Realizing the AIs are humanity's children only makes it worse. I like the character generation method better than any (other than White Wolf) I'd seen to that point. My version of Masterbook is pretty different. Character gen's pretty much the same, and the rules for skill checks are generally straight forward. I've changed the bonus number generation completely, and I still don't understand their version of combat, so I pretty much wing that. I've since found other systems I like better, and my rules preference is as follows: (1)White Wolf system for their games and a few others. (2)The Window (http://www.mimgames.com/window/) for my own settings. (3)Ars Magica magic system for magic. (4)Occasionally use the system which came with the game, such as Amber or In Nomine, but not borrow those for anything else. >Anyway, to each his own and such. What other games have you converted to >Masterbook? When did you start using it? What else have I converted to Masterbook? Nothing. I have run original settings in it though. I ran a French espionage team in the early 70's using those rules a while back, and we still meet maybe once every three months to play a game of that. That game ran very well, but it was supposed to be comedic, and that's always easier to do than serious games, I've found. I'm going to port my DG game over to The Window shortly. I'd have done it already, but I have a player leaving in a month and I figure I'll just wait until then since I'll be recruiting someone else into the game anyway.
