Menzi" Subject: DG: summerian kings Alright, it's time to talk old, real old, as in, stuff your players will come across as background plots, but should not pursue for health reasons. ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !!! Stop reading this you, you, you . . . "players!!!" ! ! ! ! ! ! ! What about preists, avatars, whatever, that do not die very fast? They may know some defense against aging, as the heads of Karotechia do, or it can be something completely different, like a lack of the genetic trait that triggers age-related degeneration, or slows the process down to a crawl. It doesn't matter for this point. Millenia would have drained such a man's san to nothing, but he (she?) would likely be the subtle sort, rather than the obvious "danger to himself and others." (That much time must make you a bit mellow, eh?) What would this sort of person do, how would it influence the world. Doubtless that after seeing everything fall away, it would be either suicidal of obsessed with making a mark, a lasting one, on the transient world. What brings me to the summerian kings is the movie _Contact_. I know it was a bit too smily happy from the average conspiracy theorist, but it had a few subtle twists. (what got me thinking back to this was the X-files commments and the fact that it is now becoming a movie.) Now those of you who saw the movie will remember "S. R. Haden." Those of you who opted to save the green likely don't know who the hell I'm talking about. S.R. Haden was a benefactor to the star on her quest, funding her research grant and playing a pivotal role in putting all the pieces together. (He revealed that the pages of the puzzle are aranged as walls of a cubes, not quadrents of a square, in three dimentions not two, a fact that baffled everyone else.) The whole discovery seemed to be orchestrated by Mr. Haden through his corporate paper chains of power. Now, here's the deal. Some one writing the script did his homework, or played alot of Trivial Pursuit (the Early Middle-Eastern Civilizations edition). The word S.R. Haden is never actually seen in the movie, only spoken. The name of the mysterious benefactor (of humanity?) is Esar Haden, one of names of the Summerian Kings, each of whom had a reign (over their own, seperate territory, as I understand it) that is recorded to have lasted thousands of years, upwards of ten. (Granted that at this the times they would have been around, their civilization would have been little more than a tents and caves sheltering hunter/gatherers, but that is beside the point, and maybe there was more, like those lost cities Lovecraft liked to write about.) So what's this mean to your game? (I bet your asking right about now . . .) Well, _Contact_ was one authors take on what such a man would plan, what's your's? Sorry to leave it so open like that, but hey, you'd just rewrite it to fit your game anyway. If you want that sort of thing in it at all, that is. Use it in good health, R. That explains a bit. Actually, it was Carl Sagan who came up with the name, and of course it's written down in the novel. Carl was always into history, so it's not at all surprising that he slipped in such an obscure reference. In the novel, one of Hadden's (that's the spelling in the novel) big things was an adult theme park called Babylon, where one could enjoy all sorts of normally-frowned-upon pleasures. He lived there, raking in the dough and ruling over his domain. Of course, Babylon was a Sumerian city. The Babylon in Contact gives me an idea. Note that the first pages and several sections have been redacted, but Jean has identified it as paperwork from HEARTLIGHT, what has previously been considered a minor and inconclusive Night at the Opera conducted circa 1982. Kelley XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX [PORTION REDACTED] I established surveillance of the vicinity based on these reports of UFO activity and BLUE LIGHT mobilization, in order to develop intelligence for possible use by DELTA GREEN assets according to the detected alien activity and threat level. Coordinates for the alleged landing site placed it in a heavily wooded area, and ground radiation levels confirmed likely alien contact. [PORTION REDACTED] On arrival I observed that the EBE had already established contact with an apparent human child (ref ELLIOT), using said child's home as a base of operations. During surveillance I acquired visual contact with the EBE, and ascertained that it was of a similar kind to others reported in conjunction with BLUE LIGHT operations (ref GRAYS). Audio surveillance of the EBE's base recorded its initial encounter with ELLIOT's younger sister (ref GERTIE): her initial reaction was a period of extended screaming, silenced by ELLIOT in order to maintain concealment. The EBE used an undiscerned technique to quiet GERTIE; visual surveillance recorded only a faint glow in the room with no corresponding increase in thermal or electromagnetic levels. [PORTION REDACTED] ...have spotted a number of intelligence officers in the area, possibly BLUE LIGHT or NRO-DELTA operatives according to [PORTION REDACTED] ...Through careful surveillance I observed the EBE and its accomplice ELLIOT constructing what appeared to be a makeshift communications apparatus. Despite the technical nature of the work, the origins of the EBE were hinted at in the croaking chant which it repeatedly intoned: "Ey'ti bho n'o! Ey'ti bho n'o!" There was no discernable effect after overnight operation of the apparatus, but the tone of the chant seemed all too familiar after [PORTION REDACTED], leading me to speculate on the nature of the EBE and its ilk and of its goals. Was it not the same in restrained menace as the prayers of the [PORTION REDACTED]? What horrors from beyond the void might have heard that horrid croaking song?? I recovered my senses lying still beneath the swollen boughs of writhing, unulating redwoods which swayed arhythmically as if to the piping of some unseen and unheard atonal flute. Or it may have been the wind. I returned to surveillance of the EBE's base of operations, but BLUE FLY teams had already moved in, captured the EBE and quarantined the house. Despite extraordinary security measures I obtained brief surveillance of the EBE in contact with the boy ELLIOT, and saw more clearly the "glowing" phenomenon. It emanated from the EBE's hand, though it was unclear whether it was technological or psychogenic in origin. Following the emanation, ELLIOT effected the release of the EBE from the BLUE FLY guards, the ease of which suggested some form of sensory or mental manipulation. Additionally, some form of levitative power or technology was employed to facilitate the escape of the EBE and its accomplices. At this point visual surveillance of the EBE was lost. Operatives pursuing related investigations should be alerted to the possibility of increased EBE contact and exposure, and to the previously unseen powers or technologies which were demonstrated here. It is imperative that the creature's accomplices, ELLIOT and GERTIE, be apprehended immediately if useful intelligence is to be extracted before the BLUE LIGHT boys get to them. Considering the degree of their exposure to and use of alien technology and techniques, operatives should be prepared to use extreme force in effecting these collaborators' capture. Clones are unstable and begin to commit acts of random violence, wild and free, reveling in joy and destruction. A character important to the party is revealed to be a clone or bioroid. Times, May 16, 1998 FBI Special Agent Steven Austin (1967-1998) was killed in the line of duty yesterday, while investigating a case in Honolulu. He is survived by his parents and one sister. His body was used in an attempt to frame his partner, FBI Agent and DG friendly Isamu Yamazaki. It was created under the codename PANTHEON and it's stated purpose is to analyze the social interaction of small groups. It is my belief that CHECKMATE was built to function as a *assassination engine*. If this is true, then certain forces directing the creation of this entity could simulate the effects of key assassinations before carrying them out. Tests of a prototype CHECKMATE were performed on a private/corporate security group. The Bannerman team managed to survive somewhat intact. Conversations with the AI have shown a rather subtle game oriented personality. I have exposed the AI to the empathy virus and certain other controls, but only time will tell if my associates and I can turn this entity to our purposes. It is almost certain that other PANTHEON related AI's have been developed or are being developed. Hi there, first time poster, long time lurker.... I'm really interested to find out a bit more of the shady stuff. The older background material is also pretty useful. BTW, check out this month's Fortean Times (http://www.forteantimes.com/) Strange Days section for a lovely story about an apocalypse cult that got it wrong....
