Been enjoying reading the list, and since I just got a big project off my chest, I'll toss in a few ideas. These were going to be in an article for a gaming magazine that didn't survive. Oh well. I think the Call Of Cthulhu rules system just rocks. It's a perennial favorite of mine. I see little need to tamper with it. My schtick, on the other hand, is unholy fusion of _settings_. White Wolf's [1] Wraith: The Oblivion crosses over really well with Delta Green, particularly if you dump the rest of the World Of Darkness and just keep Wraith. [1] Someone's going to want to have a knee-jerk reaction here. I'll wait. :) Some highlights: 1. Lurking at the bottom of the universe in Wraith is Oblivion, a mindless force of pure passive destruction. This is even more fun than Azathoth as an ultimate secret. 2. Oblivion's first servitors, the Malfeans, read very, very much like Great Old Ones. So shuffling in the relevant cosmological bits goes easily there. 3. It's true that the stock Lovecraftian universe is, particularly in the later stories, essentially a scientific rather than mystical place. But look at Thomas Ligotti's work for the Lovecraftian worldview with full-blown fantastic elements. I think one can work in the restless dead without a great deal of difficulty. 3a. And imagine the fun when one or more agents gets slaughtered only to find that the struggle continues...and gets even worse. Trying to convince their associates of life after death would drive some scenarios all by itself. 3b. There's easy room for interplay between the Shadowlands (the lands of the dead) and the Dreamlands. Indeed, it looks like some of the Dreamlands _is_ essentially the lands of the dead or can be. 4. Wraith's Spectres in particular make very handy opponents. They're tough, and mere big guns won't stop them permanently, but they're manageable. And they could easily account for various Delta Green phenomena - particularly the Karotechia - long with stuff out of UFO folklore. Conversely, the Delta Green material makes a wonderful addition to Wraith. The DG Mi-Go are sort of perfect antagonists for the restless dead, who are quintessentially beings of passion. - -- brucebaugh@mindspring.com http://www.mindspring.com/~brucebaugh/ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Jun 1998 00:06:43 -0400 From: "R. Guess what _I've_ been researching lately. :) For the fictional treatment, you really have to find Michael Swanwick's "Radio Waves". It's a short story from a few years ago, and it's in one volume or another of Gardner Dozois' THE YEAR'S BEST SF collections, and also in Swanwick's own recent collection. It's sort of Tesla science horror, kind of, except that it's not. For the broad historical survey, see APPEARANCES OF THE DEAD: A CULTURAL HISTORY OF GHOSTS, by R.C. Finucane. It's a Prometheus Press book, which means it's loaded with neat information and the occasional bit of wry humor and really needed another round of editing. But it's fascinating material. For one fun approach that fits well into the DG flavor of Lovecraftiana, try EARTH LIGHTS REVELATIONS, by Paul Devereux. Mr. Devereux argues for an explanation of UFO appearances based on piezoelectric phenomena; this'll work just fine for ghosts, too. Finally, check out http://www.etext.org/Politics/Beter.Audio.Letter/ - read the files ending in ".doc" to get oriented, and then immerse yourself in grade A conspiracy theory. There aren't ghosts as such in the late Dr. Beter's audio letters, but you can extrapolate from Russian hydromagnetocosmospheres and the like. - -- brucebaugh@mindspring.com http://www.mindspring.com/~brucebaugh/ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Jun 1998 01:43:27 -0400 From: "R. The theory stating that it exists in more dimensions than we can percieve is fascinating, and I fully agree with this. But I likde the idea about the Abgel, too, so I decided to combine them. I believe that this is the soul of a 10th cebtury knight, lost in the deserts of the middle east during the first or second crusade. The knight stumbled upon ancient texts that were locked in a forgotten city, and studied these writings seeking for a way to find his companians and defeat the infidel saracens. During his studies he was kept from dying by the forces the texts exerted on the surronding area, altering the flow of time and hidinf the city from others in the desert. When at last the knight finished studying, He was flung from the city, which dissapeared in time, and the knight found himself transformed, his body melted away, and his bare soul twisted by the alterings of time. All that remains of his former life is his sword, and now he haunts the world tormented by what he has become and what he has learned in the hideous city out of time. Whilst reading my favourite electronic newspaper this morning, I came across another interesting article that is just crying out for the DG scenario treatment. A synopsis follows: The question is what really happened and why? My analysis follows: If the man had a heart defect, it was no business of the pathologist to remove and test it without consent: the man commited suicide by hanging according to the police report... so there was already a clear cause of death. Also, why wasn't the heart returned at the same time as the body: the Israelis blame lack of communication (agreed, knowing a couple of forensic pathologists, this isn't impossible). One possiblity is that the heart was "appropriated" for organ trasnplant use and the heart from the recipient was sent back following the transplant. According to the ivestigatioins of the San Francisco Weekly, the Church of Satan is starting to crumble, especially since the untimely death of Anton LaVey eight or so months ago. With a contested will and at least one daughter who has utterly repudiated Satanism, LaVey's legacy is looking pretty grim. The Laughing Priest Dg Friendly... As it comes into plain view, the being is still impossible to make out clearly. It approaches, gaining the semblance of a man, reminiscent of the swingers of earlier this century. Once he is within a few yards, the man in the three-piece suit and black wool fedora stops. And speaks. "So... are your players under the assumption that they can beat anything under the sky with their guns an' contacts? Do they respond to descriptions o' the netherworldly and immediately classify and reference them? Have they become much to cocky or all-knowing for their own good?" "In that case, send 'em on a little vacation. A vacation that is a paradise one can only dream about... because that's where they are headed... to their dreams..." "Stay with me here. Imagine your players' reactions as they find out they no longer have modern weaponry, no contacts whatsoever, no knowledge of the land whatsoever, and to boot, their have to succeed in this alien land... otherwise their lives and souls are forfeit." "The land is the Dreamlands; the scenario is 'The Dreaming Stone.' It was published as a tie-over between the '20s and the Dreamlands of CoC. Wit' very little alteration, one can change that to DG and Dreamlands. Introduce Byron Humphrey into a few scenarios ahead of this one. Make him someone who has met one of the more scholarly agent/friendlies before. He manages to be among the sites after an agent screws up, or lets something slip. When that happens, Humphrey mocks them publicly, even if indirectly. He should be a name the investigators get annoyed any time it comes up at the end of an unrelated scenario." "From that point, it should be a cinch to get the ball rolling from chapter one." The suited figure looks to the warehouse, and then continues talking. "It looks as though I gotta get goin'. If you're interested, I'll be keepin' in contact with the scenario as it plays out; it begins next week." With that, the man heads back toward the old warehouse. He stops and glances back. "If you're still up in the air, and you desire to contact me, be patient. I come an' I go as I please..." The figure seems to blur, and a skittering is again heard. The black shape that was first seen in the warehouse moves back behind rows upon rows of dirty and dusty boxes... ...and is seen no more. the Mind Bomber ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Jun 1998 22:22:22 -0400 (EDT) From: The Man in Black Subject: RE: DG: Sick Humour: Evil Filk-fragment... The In my conception of Cell-Z (or cell zero) The PC's are all operating in the state of Hawaii. The Navy (Pearl Harbor) and Air Force (Hickam AFB) is overrun with "your Majesty" so local friendlies are more prominent here. Their contact with DG is a NPC that works for the state department and plays it real mysterious and dark (they don't even know his name). The PC's also know that US Atty Richard Hagan is in on the DG thing, but not to what extent. They've had clandestine support from other DG members without ever meeting them, and some nasty freelancers transplanted from my World of Darkness campaign are watching the PC's backs. What Ho All!, Dear God, I hope you forgive me for what I am about to unleash. Right, I came across an article that might be amusing, possibly useful and might even be well worth researching. Its from a British magazine called Focus (October 1997). "NOT RIGHT IN THE HEAD" Amanda Fielding stood for Parliament as the 'Trepanation for the National Health' candidate. Her platform was that the NHS should freely drill holes in peoples heads, claiming that it provides "increased freedom from the strangulation of chronic repression". She didn't succeed, despite her impeccable credentials: she had personally cut out a hole in her own head in 1970, even going to the extent of making a film of herself doing it with an electric drill and naming the movie 'Heartbeat in the Brain'" Now is this life imitating DG, or DG imitating life? I'm sure it cant be a coincidence. This story is apparently extracted from Frank O'Neil's book 'The Mammoth Book of Oddities'- Robinson publishing for 5 quid. Anyone know of any way to track down former Parliamentary candidates? It'd be interesting to know for which seat she stood for. Just so I can avoid it. Please, no Mr S. jokes on this thread.(You know who I mean) I'm thinking of my sanity and lunch here. SJE. And when you check out http://www.trepan.com, you will likely find (as I did) that these people appear to have no purpose. They drill holes in their heads, and expect everyone else to know why. Perusing the web page further, you can find some vague references to increased bloodflow and making your brain pulse. What Mythos being would get a big woody watching people do this to themselves? Or even influencing them to do it? What magical abilities might they be granted that spurs them on and gives them the gall to be surprised when other people don't want a hole in their head? According to Daniel Harms' _Encyclopedia_Cthuliana_ (BUY IT!), Y'golonac's acolytes are typically chosen "from among those who have suppressed unnatural desires, which Y'golonac allows them to experience in return for servitude." Also, big Y has mouths on his palms (again, no Mr. Squick jokes) -- maybe the trepanners are making a new "mouth of Y'golonac"? - ---------- Dan Chapman Network Analyst Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer dchapman@myself.com http://www.rpguniverse.com - -----Original Message----- From: Stephen Joseph Ellis To: Delta Green List Date: Sunday, June 21, 1998 3:55 PM Subject: DG: Trepanation. >What Ho All!, > >Dear God, I hope you forgive me for what I am about to unleash. >Right, I came across an article that might be amusing, possibly useful and >might even be well worth researching.
