Who she met on the MUD. Who she had never seen or spoken too in person until he visited before returning overseas. Who had been her "MUD-husband". Of course, as she was telling me about the upcoming wedding, what was running through my mind was the thought "Unless your state offers REALLY quick divorces, you can't marry this guy for a while." Because she had a very public (on the MUD) breakup with her ex-, partly due to actions on the MUD, no more than four months before. And who has since been shunned and site-banned from that MUD. I was obviously in an altered state of mind, which is why I missed the satire. Upon re-reading, it is a dry satire in the best sense - on the surface, it makes sense. Spoilers) OK, right off the top I can think of a couple important phrases about DG:CD & the Paganistas/DG-listfolk who helped create this thing: "Massive." "You evil bastards." I managed to get my tentacular appendages on this puppy last Friday, but due to work, a weekend LAN party, and general exhaustion, I've *still* only gotten to about page 153 reading thoroughly - I skimmed the whole thing on Friday, tho, for less SAN penalty. In my less-than-objective (hey, I *love* this stuff) opinion, the Delta Green Hernia-Creation Partnership packed this more full of source than the original DG *and* the two DG:Eyes Only volumes combined. I've caught about twelve to fifteen seperate campaign or scenario threads already, and if I didn't own a certain tome, I'd be frothing at the mouth to get a copy just from the references in DG:CD. (More below, in the spoiler-section.) The artwork and graphical design is, as always, beautifully done. (Again as always, I can find minor things to bitch about - so I'm a gun-fondling detail freak, so what?) About the only real gripe I have so far is that the foldout map in the back seems to fold slightly offside, resulting in edge-deformation. (This is a common problem with foldouts, especially on thinner paper and in book format, so it's not a DG:CD/Pagan problem.) Again, as per usual, the editing is damn well done - I've seen for certain only two typographical errors, and one of those (see below) may have been a typesetting error. (P. 133, line three under GAME EQUIVIALENTS: "video editors an `d directors" - the extra spaces & reverse-apostraphe may have accidentally been inserted, elsewise there may be missing text. Insertion leaves it still readable, tho.) All in all, not only am I glad to have bought this book, but that I'm buying a copy for a friend of mine. DG:CD is quality work, and worth the buckage. (I hope that Chaosium's MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS slab o' pulp is of like quality - maybe it'll start a trend...) I can't honestly judge it on the phobia scale, with MASKS OF NYARLATHOTEP being a 10, but I *can* say that considering the emphasis on modern-day conspiracy (one of my faves) and the sheer data-packing involved, I'm enjoying (and can use) DG:CD much more than I did MASKS. (Note: I've not *played* MASKS, nor run it. Your Mileage May Vary.) And Now For Something Completely Different... *SPOILERS BELOW* *TURN BACK NOW* *OKAY, YOU ASKED FOR IT* As noted above, there is a massive load of detail stuffed in here. (I'm kind of dreading a compression-failure, where the book explodes into 1500 pages of manuscript all over the room some night.) Some of the material has been adapted from other works: Tcho-Tcho goodies from AT YOUR DOOR Chaosium), Stalinist Mythos-fumbling from SECRETS OF THE KREMLIN (contained in GLOZEL EST AUTHENTIQUE, from TOME), other things from MOTAL COILS (Pagan) and (I suspect) REALM OF SHADOWS & THE GOLDEN DAWN (title?)(both from Pagan). I've probably missed, or not yet encountered, even more references. I'm hoping that such things might be noted and shared amongst Evil Researching Keepers for their own purposes and curiousity... I will note that even in this era of increased literacy and easily-available printing and duplication services, there's an awful lot of concentration of "heavy" Mythos tomes anymore: Karotechia, GRU SV-8, The Fate... it'd be an awful shame if sent out Fire Vampires to "find" certain items, hmm? I'll have to think more on this... NAMELESS Two Capitol Police officers emptied their revolvers (.357 magnums) into a man in the Capitol building parking lot. He had killed a Senator's aide with his bare hands. A Washington DC coroner declared him dead on the scene. He was toe tagged with a sharp wire and placed in a black body bag. He spent several days in a morgue freezer. Then, as a Asst. M.E. unzipped the body bag and prepped the heavily scarred man for autopsy, he regained consciousness, but not memory. His heavily muscled body was paralyzed. The Asst. M.E. readied a whirring bone saw for use, coming closer and closer to the lines drawn on his skull. That was when the nameless corpse-man reached out and grabbed his second victim, crushing the bones of her wrist into splinters. His toe began bleeding painfully, although the bullet wounds in his torso had closed dramatically, joining other, similar circular scars. While the Asst. M.E. fled in terror, seeking assistance, John Doe used a pair of medical shears to crudely attack the wire tag constricting his toe. Then he spent nearly an hour wandering the morgue in a state of confusion, periodically engaging in violent outbursts. This allowed sufficient time for local law enforcement to arrive. The first two officers on the scene were attacked and killed despite firing several rounds into the man. This was when COL Harlowe and I arrived upon the scene. When he saw COL Harlowe's dress uniform and chicken wings, he reflexively came to attention and saluted in a proper military manner. My conclusion is that this man is a soldier who volunteered for CATALYST. He is currently being held at a research facility owned by MYRIAD TECHNOLOGIES, which has been linked to INVISIBLE in the past. He has now regained some control of his faculties. However his memories have been returning very slowly, despite the best efforts of INVISIBLE telepaths. I plan to contact the ETHOS about this matter soon, if they do not predict my actions and get in touch with me first. The Man in Black is : Seeing You... For DG to get Gestapo-like powers, the US Constitution would have to be suspended or abandoned. To accomplish this, a gradual procedure of increased bureacracy making it difficult to achieve access to the bill of rights and other amendments would have to be implemented. Then further legislature would grant certain authority to the local level or organizations like FEMA, where political party appointees would tighten control. Voter apathy would then be consistently increased by perceived political corruption, a long period of prosperity followed by sudden economic disaster (the mythos), and a series of lost wars and territories (the mythos again). This would cause a domestic terrorist revolution of epic proportions. Everything from biker gangs, to neo-nazis, to decent law cherishing citizens would have to take sides in a Balkanized 2nd American Civil War (I'll concede that to the unwashed stinkin' foreign types on the list). Without a world policeman; Taiwan vs. China, India vs. Pakistan, Russia vs. it's lost empire, Iran vs. Iraq vs Israel. This is the ENDTIMES. I survived a direct hit from a tornado when I was a kid. I don't recall much during the actual touchdown, dark basement with a lot of noise and all. But afterward when we surfaced, the town was changed. Perhaps the strangest aspect of that tornado was the fact that on our side of the street there was no damage, but the other side of the street was devastated. Tornadoes leave bizarre types of damage behind. The house directly across the street from me looked as if a giant knife had sliced it down the middle. You could see a cross section of the inside of the house. I was amazed. I also survived the Blizzard of 78. A first for me, I lived in the rural country when it hit. I drove home from work at 11:00 PM in the midst of it not knowing what it was until it was too late. The trip was 25 miles and I remember thinking I might not make it. The road had vanished completely and white out conditions were becoming almost continuous. No one needs to ask me if I know God exists. I was in a little six cylinder Mustang that was barely stuttering along when I pulled into my garage. My house just across the road was impossible to see. I aimed myself towards where I thought the house should be and started fighting against the wind to get there. As it was, I almost missed the house altogether due to the force of the wind. Had I missed the house, I would have ended up in a large field disoriented and lost. We were cut off from everyone for seven days during that blizzard. No phones, no electricity, no heat except for one kerosene heater, short rations, and surrounded by 20 foot drifts. It was sobering. I also "survived" Hurricane Bonnie when I was vacationing in South Carolina during her visit. Actually, I just waved at her as she blew by the coast, but it was entertaining to watch the locals prepare for a hurricane. I thought it interesting that they thought I was crazy for living in Tornado Alley. As they put it, you can prepare for a hurricane because you know they are coming, but tornadoes ambush you and you get no warning. What can I say? It makes life interesting. So, do I qualify for the Survivor's Club? ;-> Finally, the light at the end of the tunnel. . . . heh, heh, heh! I'm from the Valley of the Ruhr where a lot of coal-mining took place until the 60s and 70s when German coal became too expensive. There is still some mining but only because the few mines that are still working are heavily supported by the Social-democrat Government of the state of North-Rhine-Westfalia: One German miner costs the German tax payer about $150,000 a year!!!! Now, this might be useful for DG or CoC: There's a lot of abandoned mines under valley of the Ruhr, an industrial area with a population of about 6 - 8 millions [ depends on what you still think of as belonging to the region ] and many of these mines are connected. This definitely is a paradise for Ghouls. The university of Bochum where I studied was built in the late 60s on what has once been a coal mine. However, I'd like to add to it by mentioning the vampire "politics" in Blade. 1) I loved the idea of "brands" on human servants. A tattoo on the back of the neck to let other Children of the Night that this one is someone's property. Servants work for the promise of vampiric immortality. 2) The tension between "born" vampires (with a possible non-human origin) and "made" vampires. Born vampires have no scars whatsoever (and the males, I assume, are uncircumcised; a little detail the movie didn't provide) and "made" vampires bear all the scars and damage they acquired before becoming undead. In addition, "born" vampires are usually ancient and "made" vampires are nouveau dead, usually in the fractions and single digits centurywise. In the movie, there were some power plays and discussions that paralleled the Traditionalist/New Wave split among ghouls. Vampires were depicted as a global conspiracy who own the authorities, whether the authorities are aware of it or not. This was an up to date spin on the traditional vampire. The premise was that while vampires have always been around, they've been getting concerned about their food supply (us) running out, what with mans ever increasing ability to cause damage to himself (pollution, diseases etc.) and so decide to take action. The plots of the episodes revolve around vampire plots to: make money to bankroll operations, genetically alter the meningitis bug to carry the vampire (referred to in the series as Code Five - V in roman numerals - geddit?) infection for purposes of increasing their population by vast numbers in a short time, recruit scientists and such like. The team hunting them is very DG'ish, its headed up by an ex- priest (Pierce Harman?) and has an ex-cop, ex-SAS guy and a scientist whose husband and son were taken (he was an expert in diseases of the blood). They use up to date equipment like the Heckler & Koch SOCOM .45 automatic with graphite bullets - and with a miniature viewcam attached to the side (not only do the vampires not have reflections, they also do not appear on video or in photographs). See someone in front of you but no image on the viewcam? bangbangbang. They've also got a cool vault bathed in ultraviolet light where they store Code V remains to stop them from regenerating. You can probably guess I was a *teensy* bit impressed by this series. It was the most original thing I've seen since Edge of Darkness (anyone remember that?). I'm waiting for repeats to get the whole thing on tape - for some inexplicable reason its not been released to video. If I haven't bored your arse off already I can give you more info on the plots, the vampires capabilities, the squad members and equipment used etc. as I'm writing it all up to use for my UK based DG campaign. Having lurked on the list for some months now, it's probably about time I introduced myself. Although I don't actually run a DG game I hope to eventually (perhaps when they reprint the core book I can finally get a hold of a copy...), currently however I have the dubious honour of being a player in Rob Shankly's game (Yes that one, stop sniggering - It wasn't our fault...). At any rate, I mailed this in response to Rob sending everyone in the game a section of the king in yellow. He thought it was cute and suggested I post it to the list... - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ DG EYES ONLY: TOP SECRET It has come to our attention that an attack is being launched on members of the covert intelligence community. Aside from the common hazards (explosives, driving on bush roads (shared with log trucks), operating snowmobiles and ATV's, poor water quality in camp), there's also animals. Right now, we're trying to determine whether the ban on spring bear hunting had a positive or negative impact on safety for exploration crews. The way I view it is - there's never been an accidental shooting of an exploration worker, while there has been one geologist killed by a bear in the past ten years. Compared to the geologists who go overseas however, that seems to be not too bad. The list of possible insect-borne and waterborne diseases is inexhaustible. Add to that large carnivores and poisonous critters. Ontario, particularly Northern Ontario, is seeing an upswing in malaria cases, partly due to returning exploration and diamond drilling crews from overseas. ********************************************************************* John Petherick, CIH jpetheri@cyberbeach.net ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Aug 1999 23:27:44 EDT From: Popeyesays@aol.com Subject: Re: DG: LIVE from Istanbul In a message dated 8/18/99 10:10:10 PM Central Daylight Time, jpetheri@cyberbeach.net writes: << Right now, we're trying to determine whether the ban on spring bear hunting had a positive or negative impact on safety for exploration crews. A friend of mine was doing gelological survey work in Montana one summer. They had to carry weapons because of bears.
