In those pre-WWF days, you got a lot more atmosphere out of the regional circuit you were performing in. Being a college student in Nebraska, I of course saw the local circuit and got to enjoy the Midwest worldview made real in the ring. So, in Nebraska Jesse Ventura was half of a villainous duo dubbed the East/West Connection. For the purposes of evil atmosphere, Jesse was a Californian and always had been, hailed from Hollywood, surfed, ate nothing but California health food and vocally disparaged anyone stupid enough to pollute their precious bodily fluids with pork products (a Midwest staple) or beer (ditto). His biceps measured (according to Mr. Ventura in every other interview) 27" and he never indicated that he had or would do anything as All-American as being a member of the armed forces. His partner was Adrian Adonis, who was (billed) from NY. East/West, get it? Well, to the Midwest sensibilities, you don't get much more depraved and evil than NY and LA. Jesse would actually (gasp) belittle the flag and anyone who thought it was sacred. Adrian wouldn't talk much (Jesse was much better at it) but he would stand to the side in his Speedos and give the impression that he kind of enjoyed rubbing up against the Midwest's finest. Horror upon horror. It was a very strange time for sports entertainment. It hadn't quite evolved into the arena-filling phenom we see today, but you could detect them experimenting and groping towards a new paradigm. Experiments included: One for the ladies. Each roster included a singles match starring some Chippendale reject du jour, who would trounce some ugly non-entity without mussing his hair. Tentative forays into homo erotica. I kid you not. Bobby "The Brain" Heenan was no longer actively wrestling (unless blind-sided by a folding chair), but "managed" a stable of wrestlers who were bereft of showmanship. Rather deft, that. Bobby would handle all of the interviews (the *real* sports entertainment IMHO) and they would look good and wrestle. In one interview about an upcoming bout, Bobby the Brain and the opponent got along quite well during the interview and had nothing but good things to say about each other. Then Bobby asked if the that was a puka shell necklace that the other fellow was wearing? "Why, yes" was the reply. "Do you like it?" "Yes, yes I do." And they walked off hand-in-hand while the announcer gasped and exclaimed "NEVER before in ALL my years in professional wrestling have I seen....." as he was wont to do at least 3 times a night. Story arcs that lasted longer than the traditional 3 bouts (bad guy foreigner shows up and talks smack about the locals, beats the crap out of local hero in cheatin' nefarious way. After recovering, local hero returns but the outcome is ambiguous due to evil cheatin' foreigner, final rematch restores the balance of reality and we can all sleep safe from the invasion of outsiders. Sprinkle with impromptu team action and out-of-ring experiences to taste.) The East/West Connection's assault on the Midwest started with their flamboyant arrival and stomping the bejesus out of a sacrificial Good Guy team, the High Flyers (named for there flying scissors moves). Well, the E/WC put them in the hospital for the duration, and it was up to the upstanding locals to make things right. But, alas, there didn't appear to be any pre-existing team that could stop the E/WC juggernaut. What to do? The rest of the season consisted of watching the E/WC torque other teams into funny shapes while the *solo* locals tried to make a perfect team to protect Truth, Justice and the Midwestern Way. In no time, it was pretty much decided that The Butcher, a local tradition, would be half of the dream team. The Butcher was a big fleshy guy in the pre-steroid mold. His schtick included an advertised training regimen of hoisting a beer keg on one shoulder and going for some roadwork. He wouldn't return until the keg was empty. A man of the people. The Butcher lost several partners in the quest to stop the E/WC. During these early attempts, a solo competitor "Rock and Roll" Jablonsky (I'm faking, all I can remember is that he had a Polish last name) was getting more hype and screen time. He had long hair and wore tie-dyed tights and always carried a boombox blasting "Old Time Rock and Roll" by Bob Seger. The announcers would make much of his youth and hair and that LOUD JUNGLE MUSIC ("NEVER before in ALL my years in professional wrestling have I heard....") but would admit that he was a swell fella with respect for tradition and was good to his mother. If you are having a hard time keeping track of what decade this was occurring in, I remind you that this was '79 to '80. One of these days the 60's are going to make it to Nebraska and they will shit. Throughout the quest, the E/WC kept things hot by deriding and disparaging Family Values, beer, meat, and everything American. Finally, inevitably, The Butcher and Rock&Roll put aside their generational differences and teamed up for the greater good. Even Bobby the Brain (mass amnesia had shelved the puka shell incident) volunteered his services. After that it was all symbolism and ritual expressed through grapplin'. The East/West Connection (alas) was soundly trounced by the coalition, and the Balance was restored. Cut to rosy-fingered dawn accompanied by bird song. The nightmare was over. Long (long) ago, I read an article that portrayed Gorgeous George as a radical psychologist that assumed a persona that everyone could unabashedly despise. Well, from the mix of ingredients above it's obvious that NWI (or some other evil corporation such as Genetic Agricultural Products from DG:CD) has paid the Fate to disappear some toxic waste which may or may not be Mythos. The Network promptly carted off the 55 gallon drums and stuck them in the Ghoul tunnels where the Heretic Ghouls encountered them and became... EVEN MORE THAN GHOULS~! I recommend that toxic waste from NWI be remnants of Operation KURTZ, when Stephan Alzis' predecessor made a deal to dispose of the festering god-corpse of Ahtu. If you use GAP, then mutagenic chemical waste from their laboratories, illegal genetically engineered plants reeking of toxic contaminants, or other materials only marginally related to the Mythos be present. For a really fun ride, have a Mafia influenced waste disposal firm hire the Fate and dump all of the above and more on the Agents. Naturally, after seeing the effects on the Heretics, the Fate went out and made drugs out of the stuff and began selling it as a combat drug in concentrated form, and pure blow on the streets. Yes, I've read the same books, and got the same general impression of the NIS! In C.W. Morton's novel "Sea Trials" (p. 5), the protagonist, NCIS Special Agent Bud Wilson says: "Since the days of Tailhook, our organization had been completely reconfigured.... "The predecessor organization had been called Naval Investigative Service, or NIS. Back then, NIS worked for a Navy Admiral, a JAG type. Assigned agents were responsible to the commanding officers of the ships or the shore facilities.... The cadre of Flag officers who'd grown up in the Navy together often put pressure on the agents to make an investigation come out the way they wanted it to. And they weren't above stomping out of existence any facts or conclusions that happened to be unflattering either to them or their friends. Such is the coin of the realm in Flagdom..." Special Agent Wilson then reflects on how all that was "supposed to have changed" -- the NIS was now the Naval Criminal Investigation Service (NCIS), and the Powers that Be had allegedly "brought in a whole cadre of real live Federal law types to rework the organization from the ground up. Retired Secret Service guys, Feebs, the whole nine yards..." Wilson says they now report to a civilian director, which was supposed to take the NCIS/NIS out of the political sphere, but mainly seemed to tick off the Old Boys in the Navy who had liked to control the spin on investigations... (The above is a "brief quotation embodied in a critical article or review" -- or at least that is my intention...):) I'm going to be checking on this stuff from other sources (assuming I can find them), but it's very possible it may have some basis in fact!:) Michael Layne DGGF#688 theherald@hotmail.com ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com From: owner-dgrpg@delta-green.com on behalf of David Farnell [daf@iwa.att.ne.jp] Sent: Thursday, January 13, 2000 5:55 PM To: Delta Green List Subject: DG: Re: New York Campaign Ideas?? There was some obscure Mythos story about a trio of teens who tried to contact HPL by ouiji board, then later got smashed up in a drunken-driving accident. One of them went to the Beyond and came back--IIRC she saw a vast plane of flesh, out of which projected endless numbers of heads, human and alien. Each was a horribly suffering soul, immortal and attached to some Mythos deity. She even spoke to HPL, briefly. I remember being rather chilled, although it was a bit of a cheesy story. Also, just finished the Night's Dawn Trilogy (Reality Dysfunction, Neutronium Alchemist, Naked God) by Peter F. Hamilton. Pretty cool, pseudo-science-based ideas about the afterlife in there. Not too hard to make it a bit more dark and cynical. Also, it has an explanation for ghosts (although this is less clear), and possession plays a major role. It seems as if some sort of Christian bias (YAY SATAN! :) is blinding you here. If one assumes that there is life after death in the Cthulhu Mythos, then there are infinite possibilities available to lost souls. One could end up on the plane of flesh, escape into the Dreamlands, become a ghost, forever wander lost Carcosa, or perhaps something completely beyond our comprehension. This last seems most likely to me, both in the game and in real life and death. I would think that the Great Old Ones are imminent in flesh forever, and are somehow cut off from the non-material world of spirits and so forth. Also I'm in the middle of writing a ton of stuff for my "UnOfficial Website of The Fate" which will detail a lot of the Network's links to Organized Crime in NYC, the nature of Stephen Alzis (as an Avatar of mind numbing chaos, and the ongoing aspects of the Fate. One of the things we have established in our campaign universe (I write all the campaign with a friend who also acts as "Keeper's Thing" during the game (reminding me of rules, brainstorming impromptu, running "side" scenes when the characters split up) ugh, anyway one of the things we have established is that Alzis has been working his connections with Tiger Transit (as presented in DG:CD), that the agents assigned to handle the Hound of Tindalos FAILED miserably, and that Cho Chu-Tsao established a succesful relationship with Stephen Alzis. In fact, I was so knocked out by her Statistics (Cthulhu Mythos 87%- JEEEZUS!) that I decided that not only is Tiger Transit now in Bed with the Network (like Whole Earth Enterprises, Teese Tissue, etc.) But that Cho Chu-Tsao is also now a LORD in the Fate itself, (The Lord of Time, to be specific, and in keeping with Alzis perverse sense of humor in naming the lords). Thus the Network is expanding its control into Chicago (another traditional mobtown besides NYC) and now has links with The Bolivian Cocaine Cartel and various Southeast Asian druglords. More to Come later. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com From: owner-dgrpg@delta-green.com on behalf of McGloin, Michael [Michael.McGloin@Olsten.com] Sent: Friday, January 14, 2000 3:32 PM To: 'dgrpg@delta-green.com' Subject: DG: RE: NYC, The Fate, Stephen Alzis...etc I am looking forward to seeing this web page. I have always been an organized crime buff and I love the idea that behind the scenes the Fate are pulling the strings. However I would prefer if we could keep the real world Gangs in play as much as possible. One of the nice things about an unofficial internet site is that you can use New York's five families and their members instead of making up a bunch of fictional crime families. It would be hard to come up with a believable character that could equal Vinny "The Chin" Gigante, the alleged Godfather of the Genovese crime family who has spent the last couple of decades wandering the streets of Greenwich Village in his bathrobe. Likewise other groups such as New York's Little Odessa's Russian Mafia provide some interesting options such as some possible connections to Russian Occult groups. Likewise NYC's three Chinatown's provide various street gangs such as the Ghost Shadows, Flying Dragons and the Chinese Freemasons. People like behind the scenes figures such as Benny Ong, Chinatown's long rumored Godfather, make great models for villains of our own creation. While I like groups like Tiger transit and the Tcho Tcho, I hope we can continue to create our own villains and not over use the ones that have already been created. On the other hand I appreciate when the tales existing characters can be intelligently woven together thus creating a more believable game world. Would most you treat this as a use of a Knowledge roll or would you require a separate skill. I have noticed that the write ups in the textbook section of the Delta Green.Com have taken the rout of adding new special skills such as special operations, intelligence and intelligence analysis. I was wondering if this is the wave of the future and how people feel about the ides of building a set of flat cost skill modifiers for use with DG. I like the idea that a character could pay a flat fee for the ability to use knowledge rolls for various fields. Finally I noticed the rules concerning basic skill competency at 25%. This would allow for the assumption of success by succeeding at a luck roll. Just curious how people felt about these various rules ideas. The Godfather I + II are two of the best films ever, but while they are a good way to pick up the scent they are not a great source for real material ( although while the plot is fictional it does draw from real incidents for inspiration). Since I am away from my bookshelf I will give you some of the top of my head. The first and best is The Encyclopedia of Organized Crime which covers the key figures of the Mafia. This book covers the earlist groups such as the pre mafia Black Hand, Al Capone all the way up to the post Gotti Gambino family. Another good book which cover the Gambino family in particular is Gangland, which details the FBI's efforts to bring down John Gotti. David Kaplin has written books on Asian Organized Crime the first is Yakuza, detailing Japanese Gangs and he recently published a second one on the Chinese Triads. There are also a number of other good books on Chinese gangs and secret socities. I will take a look at some my books and get a few more titles up over the weekend. Til then you could always try the New York Post's web site's archive for any of the above topics it is an excellent source of information on New York's underworld. There are inumerable web pages with good histories of the mob. And don't worry we've made sure to include all of the most influential NYC Mafia families; including Chinese Triads, Dominican Gangs, Organitskaya, Southeast Asiang gangs, with as much recent history as possible. Some names will be fictionalized and changed, we don't exactly want to get my kneecaps blown off for implying that all those good Italian Catholics are ACTUALLY pawns of mind numbing chaos. -The Reverend Doctor Leo -Reflecting Skin Productions Who Swears that The Fate webpage will be coming soon... ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com From: owner-dgrpg@delta-green.com on behalf of REFLECTING SKIN [reflectingskin@hotmail.com] Sent: Saturday, January 15, 2000 12:42 AM To: dgrpg@delta-green.com Subject: Re: DG: NYC, The Fate, Stephen Alzis...etc Alzis definitely hooked The Lady of Time (although for some reason I find Lord to be a general nuetral term...although I know it isn't)with the possibility of raising her abyssmally low POW. One of the other things I find interesting is the possibility of interaction with the Skoptsi through the Organitskaya...although this will probably be made just a possible plot seed. We've also done some interesting character stuff with Alzis, just building on things mentioned in DGEO2. One of the ideas I've had is that Agdesh has met other "human" avatars of Nyarlathotep before, could probably answer a lot of nagging questions Alzis has about his own identity but decides not to. At some point in the past I figure Agdesh made the mistake of actually answering a "who am I, why am I here" question to an incarnation of Nyarlathotep and was nearly destroyed by the psychotic outbreak it incurred. Just some teasers, back to writing the page. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com From: owner-dgrpg@delta-green.com on behalf of Davide Mana [doctor.dee@iol.it] Sent: Saturday, January 15, 2000 8:42 AM To: dgrpg@delta-green.com Subject: DG: Delta Green in Lhasa, 1943 Greetings. I'm about to go for a massive lay down due to influenza - looks like Graeme's nannoshoggoths finally caught up with me. Personal recipe for these eventualities - a good cup of hot tea, maybe some music and a good book (there's also a young lady, but she'll come later - after passing through CDCP to recover some 'shots'). Anyway - I grasped Peter Hopkirk's 'Trespassers on the Roof of the World' (Kodansha International, ISBN 1-56836-050-9), a histoiry book detailing the race to Tibet's Sacred City in XIX and XX centuries. Just got it through the mail, and was aving it for later, but anyway.... There, on page 237, thre's an absolute golden nugget.... In winter 1943, a US Air Force cargo (actually a reconverted B-24) was 'lost' in a storm on its route from soutwestern China to northern India. The plane was carrying no cargo, and had five men of crew under Lieutennant Robert Crozier, a Texan flyboy (why do I find this unsurprising?) When finally short on fuel, the plane crashlanded in Tibet, at the time a closed country. In the following days the five men opened their way towards Lhasa, 'interacting with locals' committing in the meantime an act of blasphemy towards the Dalai-Lama etc etc. This is the stuff pulp was made of. [no wiseass remarks, MiB. Thanks.] The story as narrated by Crozier was published soon after the war, in Idaho, with the title 'Jumping in the Land of God', but is apparently not available anymore. So far I've just skimmed through the chapter, as I'd like to go through the book in the traditional, sequential way (so sue me), but I'll post a summary ASAP. Meanwhile, just ask yourself - what did those five boys do in Tibet in 1943? Wasn't there a Nazi in Lhasa at the time? We could put together some 'DG Texas cowboys kicks Brad Pitt's Nazi ass' scenario. Operation FLAMING DOMES, anybody? I envision it like sort of a 'No Man's Land' one shot . a strong, two part scenario in which the up-to-five players are sent to Lhasa on DG orders to shortcircuit the Nazi op there. . a sourcebook section detailing USAF ordnance, the plane (and what could be salvaged after the crash!), plus a solid rundown of Tibet in the '40s, the Tibetan army (flintlocks!) and whatnot. And like Grace Under Pressure, this would also be set in an extreme environment - water boils at lower temperature, your heart plays tricks on you, etc. But probably I'm just raving from the fever. I'm going to run the Puppet Shows and Shadow Plays scenario, which seems like it should run all well and good. What I wanted to ask about though is this: This is going to be my first (and my players' first) experience in roleplaying/running anything in a modern day setting. I was wondering if any of you had any advice/experiences to offer about transitioning from fantasy (i.e. ADnD) to modern day horror/conspiracy (i.e. DG). -Nathaniel Gorham- From: owner-dgrpg@delta-green.com on behalf of scott stoyanovich [redmaw@famvid.com] Sent: Saturday, January 15, 2000 9:07 PM To: dgrpg@delta-green.com Subject: DG: The Killing Jar I just read through TSR's The Killing Jar for Dark*Matter.
