Well, not exactly, since this is the official site for Andrews Air Force Base. http://www.andrews.af.mil/ changed it's address for some unknown reason. Well, one reason they might have decided to be a little harder to find is that the site listed the units assigned to the base, 10 miles from DC and home of Air Force One. This is important when you consider the reasons generally given for the lack of fighter cover over DC (and the Pentagon) during the lengthy time between the second WTC impact and the attack on the Pentagon. ""Andrews Air Force Base, home to Air Force One, is only 15 miles [sic!] away from the Pentagon, but it had no fighters assigned to it. Defense officials won't say whether that has changed." --'USA TODAY,' 17 September 2001" whoops, a quick check of a web site or two, or maybe some phone calls from Air National Guard or US Marine personnel stationed at Andrews prompted an update later that day ""The District of Columbia National Guard maintained fighter planes at Andrews Air Force Base, only about 15 miles [sic!] from the Pentagon, but those planes were not on alert and not deployed." --'USA TODAY' September 17, 2001" Andrews Air Force Base is a huge installation. It hosts two combat-ready squadrons: -- the 121st Fighter Squadron (FS-121) of the 113th Fighter Wing (FW-113), equipped with F-16 fighters; -- the 321st Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA-321) of the 49th Marine Air Group, Detachment A (MAG-49 Det-A), equipped with F/A-18 fighters. These squadrons are served by hundreds of full-time personnel. So why weren't any planes aloft to protect the capitol? At 9:06 AM the NY Police broadcast: " 'This was a terrorist attack. Notify the Pentagon.'" --'Daily News' (New York) 12 September 2001 Despite over one hour's advance warning of a terrorist attack in progress, and two more airliners waaaa-aaay off course (BTW, the FAA has facilities at Andrews, check http://www.dcmilitary.com/baseguides/airforce/andrews/partnerunits.html ) not a single Andrews fighter tried to protect the city. The FAA, NORAD and the military have cooperative procedures by which fighter jets automatically intercept commercial aircraft under emergency conditions. These procedures were not followed. Of course, the big question is "Why didn't anyone in the mainstream media bring any of this up?" Yo, Wolf Blitzer! You tellin' me you didn't know there were fighters at Andrews? Actually, Heliograph has reprinted *all* of the original supplements, including the "Soldiers Companion", and will be producing an expanded version of Marcus Rowland's "Canal Priests of Mars" late next year (the original Canal Priests had 18,000 words of source material cut out, much to Marcus's annoyance). They've also reprinted the rules for all the Space:1889 miniature battle games, but not the boards or maps due to cost reasons. Here privacy is much more potent than in the US: we have a freedom of information bill, but also an Official Secrets Act (both copied pretty much from the same British legislation). And Defamation laws are a bitch here: the onus is on the DEFENDANT (ie Journalist, like me now) to prove misdoing, rather than on the plaintiff, as in all other law. And public good defence is almost useless. There is always a right to privacy, but it needs to be balanced out, otherwise people get impunity. - the Nuge _______________________________________ The Delta Green Mailing List http://www.delta-green.com/comint/dgml/ From: owner-deltagreen@revolutionsf.com on behalf of Dave Farnell [superdave@jcom.home.ne.jp] Sent: Monday, November 26, 2001 6:06 AM To: deltagreen@revolutionsf.com Subject: Re: [DG] Danger Danger John Robinson From: "ialdaloboth *genzundheit!*" > Yeah - you sent me something called Me_nude.MP3 and a blank text file. I assume that such things are merely 'going on principle' > ethics stuff, but that's still a bit much, no? No. You can consider me a cypherpunk, I use crypto regularly, support (with my own work and time) development of Free crypto software, and ran an anon-remailer for some time. I have nothing against gov't law enforced agency officer shwoing at my door, presenting me an ID and a warrant that I should give him a key to one of my encrypted messages. That I will do. I can do this without hurting my crypto infrastructure. Then I will call a lawyer and generally inform anyone interested what happened. What I am against is eliminating the warrant part of the process. The gov't may have my encrypted data but they have to have to ask for it. And with good reason, backed with a warrant or court order. The data is my home. The physical location where I live is less important for me than data on my computers - my life is more concentrated on the data than on the physical location (the computer on which I compose this email is actually about 220 kilometers from the one that I sit at). If gov't need a warrant to search my house (in local law the police doesn't need a warrant actually but thats another story), they should need a warrant to search my data. I mean, a PC with one of them babies could drop a HOTT from 400 yards, and whats to stop them carving up Cthulhu like a pot-roast? Unless you want a situation where EVERYTHING is game, the you've gotta cut more than a few things. The people in the film didn't seem to be doing so well against the beasties. I'd go ahead and give them the tech, but screw them on the power supply. It adds that "clock is ticking" element. I never worry too much about giving the PCs firepower; I just keep track of the dwindling ammo. Pretty soon they are reluctant to go full auto or provide covering fire. Then other team members notice that some teammates are hoarding. Tempers flare. Accusations fly. Then comes that golden moment when someone suggests they distribute the remaining ammo evenly and everyone calculates whether they (personally) are better or worse off if they do it. Meanwhile, the unseen enemy advances. Those Colonial Marines came off pretty tough in "Aliens," but that little digital readout counting down the rounds showed which side had the real advantage. And yes, I am aware of what a lousy place that was to put the counter if it had been a real gun, and how that ruined the whole movie for you ;-) Oh, and remember, after you carve up Cthulhu like a pot roast he reassembles in a pissy mood. MacAfee didn't tag the first of these attachments as a virus, and (before I noted the .scr suffix as odd) I attempted to open it. Luckily, it encountered an error after it brought up Player. I intend to be more careful in the future.
