(Operation SANDMAN)

©1998 Shane Ivey

DATE: 3 June 1998 (debriefed 20 SEP 1998)
AGENTS: Mark (Brian Lundquist, DOJ), Michael (John Rogers, CIA)
FRIENDLIES: Connor Danforth, NSA; Lt. Joe McCannon, NYPD
SUMMARY: Operation SANDMAN, debriefing transcript 12: The team detects further surveillance and confronts two more spies in a deadly ambush.
CASE STATUS: Open

Keeper:
OK, last time Lundquist and Maddux went through a very strange firefight with an unidentified spy, while Kelley was waiting outside and Rogers headed for another exit, namely the fire escape.

Keeper:
The spy is now dead in a massive pool of blood, on a cement-walled staircase which has been riddled with dozens of bullets.

Keeper:
Maddux is looking pale and hurt with one arm limp at his side, apparently from some sort of laser-like burn.

Keeper:
Lundquist just grabbed the more essential pieces of the spy's camera and his "flashlight"-looking tool or weapon.

Lundquist:
I had gathered up the dead guy's "flashlight" and the broken pieces of his camera and headed for the exit, with Maddux in tow.

Rogers:
I was busy running away or atleast trying to get to the ground before the spy.

Lundquist:
(When I rifled the guy's pockets, looking for ID, did I find any other film cannisters?)

Keeper:
Right. Rogers, you got onto the fire escape outside the empty apartment and headed down.

Keeper:
He had no other film, Lundquist.

Rogers:
I'm assuming I met up with Maddux's partner by the car.

Keeper:
When Rogers hit the ground, Kelley had already gotten in the car and driven across to pick him up.

Lundquist:
All righty then. Rush down to the waiting car.

Keeper:
They drive around to the front of the building. Maddux and Lundquist pile in.

Lundquist:
I want to write on a piece of paper,

Rogers:
"Let me look at that arm."

Keeper:
You drive off. Kelley sticks to the speed limit and keeps his eyes darting constantly.

Lundquist:
"ASSUME CAR IS BUGGED. LET'S DITCH IT IN LONG-TERM PARKING AT THE AIRPORT AND GET A RENTAL"

Rogers:
I'm going to try and treat maddux "Pass the bag"

Keeper:
Kelley glances at it, reads, and nods.

Keeper:
Maddux winces. "Yeah, okay." He passes the medical bag over with his good hand.

Keeper:
Kelley takes a turn southward after a few minutes.

Keeper:
Rogers, Maddux's wound looks exactly like a laser injury, from what you've read. You've never encountered one as a combat injury before, though.

Rogers:
I'm going to do the standar treatment for laser burns then.

Keeper:
There are deep burned lacerations across his upper left arm. You clean them and apply compresses and give him some painkillers. Within a few minutes he looks a lot healthier. He starts to flex his fingers, then winces again and thinks better of it.

Keeper:
Kelley drives the car into JFK, following convoluted streets and confusing signs to the long-term parking decks.

Keeper:
A few minutes later, the car is parked and he gets out to get everything important out of the trunk.

Keeper:
He and Maddux keep quiet. Maddux keeps his left arm close to his body. He packs his submachine gun back into its case.

Keeper:
You see a sign across the lot that reads, "Rental Cars".

Keeper:
You hear the engine of another car echoing in the lot a couple of aisles down.

Rogers:
"pass me the pad please"

Lundquist:
Scan 360 degrees, looking for tails, etc.

Rogers:
write WE DON'T KNOW HOW SENSITIVE THE MICS ARE, ANY ONE SHOT ID'S ON YOU MR L.?

Lundquist:
(Here's the pad...)

Lundquist:
(Keeper? I assume not...)

Keeper:
No. You have plenty back at the safe-house, but you left in a hurry.

Keeper:
The car you hear before turns onto your aisle and starts driving toward you.

Keeper:
It's a lincoln-green midsize Buick.

Lundquist:
Duck across to another aisle, quickly.

Keeper:
Kelley and Maddux lift their bags and follow, trying to look innocent about it.

Lundquist whispers:
I want to ready that "flashlight..." Does its use appear obvious? Is there a front end and a button to press?

Rogers:
I'm following

Keeper whispers:
Instead of an "on" switch there is a small pad of about ten unmarked buttons.

Lundquist whispers:
Oh, good... :-) Sounds like something to try (much) later then.

Keeper whispers:
You didn't think they were gonna make it easy, did you?? ;-)

Lundquist whispers:
I guess I'll just rely on my ol sidearm then...

Lundquist whispers:
Let me guess... there's a SAN check just to think about what the different buttons might do!

Keeper:
The Buick drives slowly past. You see an old woman at the wheel. She looks at your retreat with a scowl.

Keeper whispers:
Lose 4 more just for figuring that much out. ;-)

Lundquist:
(Now all we need is for a cat to jump out at us.)

Keeper:
Kelley breathes, "Well?"

Lundquist:
"Either of you guys have a cover ID on you?"

Keeper:
Both nod.

Lundquist:
"Okay, let's go rent a couple of cars then."

Keeper:
They nod again and head for the terminal, looking left and right as they walk.

Keeper:
Other cars drive past as you cross the road and head into the terminal. You see prominent metal-detectors and security officers at the entries of each terminal.

Lundquist:
"You guys want to leave your toys outside with us, or would that feel too naked?"

Keeper:
Kelley shakes his head. "If shit happens and we need to worry about it, we'll need all the firepower we can get. Just act normal."

Keeper:
He walks up to the Hertz counter and stands in line behind two business-looking people.

Keeper:
Rogers, you notice two of the security guards at a nearby terminal watching you.

Rogers:
Act natural but try and keep them in view

Keeper:
They talk together in low voices for a second. They seem more interested in Maddux.

Lundquist:
I'll make casual conversation with Rogers & Maddux. "Hey, did you see the Yankees game last weekend?"

Keeper:
Kelley gets up to the counter and starts talking to the clerk. He produces a driver's license and a credit card.

Rogers:
"No missed it caught the golf though."

Keeper:
Maddux nods tensely. "Yeah, hell of a game. Who's that new guy, the heavy hitter?" He glances at the guards, then out the door again.

Keeper:
Kelley comes back over. "I got two cars. Come on."

Lundquist:
"Yeah, let's go."

Keeper:
You head to the Hertz lot. A few minutes later you are split up into two shiny new rental cars.

Lundquist:
Back to the safehouse, then? With the usual precautions to detect tails and such?

Rogers:
"I'll drive with Maddux"

Keeper:
A helicopter passes overhead, low.

Lundquist:
"Or do we want to head back into Harfleur, see what's up?"

Lundquist:
Look at it... Is it black?

Keeper:
Yeah.

Lundquist:
Great. Can I identufy it? Make, model?

Keeper:
It looks civilian, like the kind Donald Trump flies in, but it doesn't have any obvious corporate markings.

Rogers:
"I think back to the safehouse for Maddux so that we have one suspiscious wound out of public site."

Lundquist:
Well, we're at the airport... "Yeah, I agree. Let's get going."

Rogers:
"You guys check harfleur, or are you covered in blood?"

Lundquist:
"Let's take different routes though."

Keeper:
Heh, I forgot about that. Presumably Lundquist got the gore off of him, or had a change of pants in his trunk.

Lundquist:
Yeah, I keep an overnight bag back there.

Keeper:
That works. So are you all going back to the house, or are Lundquist & Kelley going sightseeing?

Lundquist:
"Kelly, let's do a quick drive past the church, see what's going on."

Rogers:
"See you in a while."

Lundquist:
"Watch your backs."

Keeper:
"Sure thing." He nods to Maddux as he gets into the car. "Get some ice on that arm."

Keeper:
Both cars drive off.

Keeper:
Rogers, you and Maddux make it to the safehouse without incident, though it is a long drive.

Keeper:
Lundquist, Kelley drives out past the church. You see two police cars and a local news van parked outside the apartment building where the shooting took place.

Rogers:
Right can I do any more for Maddux?

Keeper:
You continue to look after his wound, but mostly he just needs to keep it still and change the dressings regularly and take plenty of Tylenol.

Keeper:
Lundquist, there are no cars parked outside the church itself now.

Lundquist:
Okay. Any news of the shooting on the radio?

Keeper:
You flip radio channels. Finally you find an AM news station which mentions it after a minute.

Lundquist:
What does the coverage say? Are there any details?

Keeper:
"Once again, in late-breaking news there has been another shooting in Harfleur. Reports conflict, but at least one witness has alleged that the police were involved . . . "

Keeper:
". . . Officer Leroy Lemonde of the 116th Precinct, which includes Harfleur, has denied police involvement in the shooting. We will keep you informed as this story unfolds."

Keeper:
The anchor interjects: "Ken, can you tell us if there is any connection between this shooting and the recent shootings at the Southside AME Church?"

Keeper:
The reporter: "That is not clear yet, Don. Certainly it would be a terrible coincidence, since this latest incident happened just across the street from the church. The victim has not yet been identified."

Lundquist:
(Who is this guy, a conspiracy theorist?)

Keeper:
The anchor: "All right, thank you for the report. In other news . . . ."

Lundquist:
Okay... Do I notice anything else out of the ordinary? Unmarked vans parked nearby? Short white guys in windbreakers observing the scene?

Keeper:
No short white guys. You do, however, notice a car which seems out of place: it is a plain-looking sedan, civilian tags, with very dark-tinted windows. You think you see the silhouettes of two persons inside.

Lundquist:
Get the tag numbers. "What do you make of those guys, Kelly?"

Keeper:
It is parked near a corner, within sight of the church and the apartment building.

Keeper:
Kelley looks the car over. "Can't see enough to say. See if you can run a make on the tag."

Lundquist:
I'll dial up Osborne.

Keeper:
He answers his DG-phone. "Yes?"

Lundquist:
"Hey, can you run a lisence plate for me real quick? NY plate, XXX123..."

Keeper:
"Just a minute."

Keeper:
There's a pause. Kelley keeps the car idling at a curb.

Keeper:
After three minutes you hear Osborne's voice again. "It's owned by an investigative company. The Breckinridge Corporation. They have a Manhattan office."

Lundquist:
"Interesting... Do you know anything about them, offhand? Have they ever been involved in our line of work?"

Keeper:
"They're a big company. International. I've heard rumors that they've done domestic black ops-work, but that's just urban legends."

Lundquist:
"Okay, thanks. Listen, I also need to get information on another outfit, a local plumbing contractor."

Keeper:
"Who is it?"

Lundquist:
I tell him about the guys who swept the church earlier (can't remeber the company name right now). "I'm going to send you the picture we got of the guy, maybe he's in a file someplace."

Keeper:
"Evans Plumbing Service, got it. I'll check it out."

Lundquist:
"Thanks."

Lundquist:
What time is it right now?

Keeper:
About 1:15 pm.

Lundquist:
I'd better call Agent Morgan, reschedule our meeting...

Keeper:
You dial her office line. "DEA," says an unknown voice.

Lundquist:
"Agent Morgan, please."

Keeper:
"Agent Morgan is not available at the moment."

Lundquist:
"Can I get a message to her? I was supposed to meet with her, but something's come up and I won't be able to make it."

Keeper:
"I'll take the message. Just a minute."

Keeper:
You hear paper shuffling, then: "All right."

Lundquist:
"Have her call Brian Lundquist at 555-3484."

Lundquist:
"Thanks."

Keeper:
"Sure thing." (click)

Keeper:
Kelley watches the shady car.

Lundquist:
"Well, I don't think there's anything more we can do here... Let's head back to the safe house."

Lundquist:
We'll head back out to the safehouse.

Keeper:
Kelley nods and starts driving. You've gone maybe a block when he nods to the rear-view mirror. "They're tailing us."

Lundquist:
Actually, I'll have Kelly pull over around the corner.

Keeper:
He does so. He glances back again and waits.

Lundquist:
Okay. Nevermind, then. "Want to drive them somewhere quiet and take them out?"

Lundquist:
"Wait, not yet..." I speed dial Rogers.

Keeper:
"This is your case," he says. He nods and waits for you to call.

Keeper:
Rogers, your phone buzzes. You've just stepped inside the safe house.

Rogers:
"Hello?"

Keeper:
(Its Lundquist)

Lundquist:
"Vert? Green here. We've got a shadow. Why don't you get Danforth and Maddux and your stuff and we'll set up a little surprise for them?"

Rogers:
"When and where, stay on the line and key me in Mr. Green."

Lundquist:
I'll name someplace about halfway between Harfleur and the safehouse.

Lundquist:
(I should know the route pretty well, we've been driving it pretty regularly these past few days...)

Rogers:
"Hey Maddux, Danforth grab your guns and get your rears in gear, we've got some hero shit to do!"

Lundquist:
I want to try to find someplace nice and quiet, like a conveniently abandoned factory or something.

Keeper:
Sure. The area in-between is mostly old industrial, with a lot of warehouses along one stretch, a shopping district along another, all of it flanked by aparment buildings.

Rogers:
We are going to get some of the toys out of the Armory, Any thing there designed to puncture a cars tires and make it stop?

Rogers:
"Mr. Green, we are getting our stuff together, where should we head and how do you want to do this."

Rogers:
"I'd suggest we get to the location first and set up you go past we spring the surprise."

Keeper:
Puncture car-tires? You have some armor-piercing ammunition available. Not a lot. Maybe a box each in 9mm and .45. And Maddux has a .357 revolver.

Keeper:
Kelley keeps driving. He uses his free hand to open up his "camera case" and put his MP5SD together.

Rogers:
How about those things the police use that puncture a joyriders tyres but let them run dow slowly

Keeper:
Hmm, I'm not familiar with that.

Lundquist:
We'll lead them on a little tour, without making it look obvious. Rogers, you find a likely spot and get in position. Then we'll drive to you and you can spring the trap.

Rogers:
Right we are heading to our position with whatever we can get from the safehouse, including fake id for everyone.

Rogers:
"Mr Green, do you want to box them in us come in behind you slow down we speed up?"

Keeper:
You head for a position. What are you looking for? An old warehouse area?

Rogers:
Yes we're all in the car heading to the agreed upon location

Lundquist:
Yeah, but we'd better stick to a public street... We don't want to scare them off by heading onto private property somewhere...

Rogers:
Somewher narrow where they won't be able to turn the car

Rogers:
and can't back out because we are behind them

Keeper:
The warehouse area has a main street running through it, then lots of cross-streets which pass by warehouses and storage lots for several blocks.

Keeper:
Off the cross-streets are smaller alleys and access roads on the individual properties.

Rogers:
"Mr. Green we are ready lets do it"

Keeper:
Kelley asks, "Are we doing this in the main street, or going off to isolate them? They might just think we're trying to ditch them."

Lundquist:
"We want to isolate them without making them think we're going to jump them."

Keeper:
Rogers, did say you were going to drop off Maddux and Danforth?

Lundquist:
"Maybe we should speed up, make some sudden turns before we spring this thing? Get them concentrating on trying to follow us, instead of wondering where we're taking them..."

Keeper:
Kelley nods. "I'll speed up like we want to get away, then. Shit. Remind me to get the Agency to put me through a defensive driving course."

Lundquist:
"You mean you're not trained for this either?"

Rogers:
If we were in a street with cover if not they saty in the car

Keeper:
He grins tightly. "This ain't the jungle."

Keeper:
On the side streets near the warehouses there's tons of cover. There are lots of crates, cinderblocks, chunks of rusting machiney, broken windows and doors, etc.

Lundquist:
Grin humorlessly. "Sure it is. You just need to look at it that way."

Keeper:
"Yeah." He looks ahead and speeds up.

Lundquist:
I steel myself and ready my .45

Keeper:
You drive along the block. He swerves around a taxi and rushes a light that just turned red. You hear shouted Arabic curses. Kelley listens and laughs.

Keeper:
Behind you, the tail pulls around as well, nearly brusing the cabbie's outstretched hand. They dodge expertly around a car coming across from the side and pull through the intersection.

Keeper:
Meanwhile, Maddux has a pistol out, with his left arm bound to his side. He's packing a deluxe package, .45 automatic with a laser sight and sound/flash-suppressor. Very Special-Ops.

Lundquist:
"Hey, Kelly, that car's still back there... I think they're following us or something?"

Keeper:
Kelley laughs aloud. He takes a hard left. Tires squeal. You hear a loud CLUNK as the corner dents a parked car.

Keeper:
Lundquist, behind you the tail comes around the corner with a hard bank, but they make it easily just as Kelley takes another corner.

Keeper:
He keeps the speed on, The warehouse stretch is ahead.

Keeper:
Rogers, what are you doing, then? Maddux and Danforth are crouched on either side of an alley. Danforth as a shotgun that looks too big for him.

Rogers:
"Mr.Green we're in position, coming up behind the tail just slow down when it the right place"

Lundquist:
"Okay, we're ready."

Keeper:
Kelley drives past the first block of warehouses, then he takes a hard right into an alley. It's a dead end after only 100 feet.

Rogers:
"Right I'll speed up and box them in", "get ready for the fun to start" gets his .45 out

Keeper:
Rogers, you see the tail take the corner following Lundquist and Kelley.

Rogers:
I'm getting into position and safely and unobtrusively as I can

Keeper:
Kelley slams on the breaks about halfway down the alley. The car lurches to a fishtailed halt.

Keeper:
The tail drives into the alley, but they hit the breaks right away. Then Rogers turns in after them.

Keeper:
They come out fast in reverse, straight at Rogers' car.

Rogers:
I'm driving up close to stop them reversing into me then standing on the breaks

Lundquist:
"Back up, Kelly! Pin them against Rogers' car!"

Keeper:
SLAM! Glass cracks and the hood bends up with the impact.

Rogers:
(Braces for impact and crosses fingers)

Keeper:
Kelley snarls and puts it in reverse. He drives fast, barely keeping the car in a straight line.

Rogers:
Keep revving the car to stop them

Keeper:
Rogers, you see the driver's window come down. They pull around forward again, trying to curve around for a 3-point turnabout. Kelley and Lundquist rush toward them in reverse.

Lundquist:
Grit my teeth and brace for the impact... "I hope Danforth has a bead on these guys...

Keeper:
Danforth and Maddux pop up not far away: Maddux is behind a rusting dumpster maybe 30 feet from the cars. Danforth is about twenty feet further in.

Rogers:
Try and trap them between my car and Kellys

Keeper:
Rogers, you see the muzzle of a gun in that open window as they try to turn.

Rogers:
Get down as best I can

Keeper:
Danforth fires at the car's tinted windshield.

Keeper:
You hear the grinding boom of a suppressed machine gun as they fire, and slugs pound ringingly into Rogers' car.

Keeper:
Then BOOM! Danforth blows out the tinted front windshield.

Keeper:
Then Kelley's car slams into the other one, at its rear. Both cars slide around and rock to a halt. Lundquist, you and Kelley each take 1 HP.

Lundquist:
"Oof!"

Keeper:
Maddux fires into the car, his shots shattering the rear windshield.

Keeper:
Rogers, you are still in one piece after the burst.

Lundquist:
I pop my door open and spring out, gun in one hand and ID in the other. I'm looking for weapons pointing at me and yelling "FEDERAL AGENT! HANDS UP!"

Keeper:
A gun pops up over the passenger windshield in your direction, Lundquist.

Lundquist:
Okay, jump back behind our car with all possible haste then.

Keeper:
Kelley piles out with his MP5 held out. It's ruby laser flickers in the dust and smoke inside the other car in an "X" with Maddux's beam.

Rogers:
I get out and cover them from behind my door. "FEDERAL AGENT!"

Lundquist:
"DROP YOUR WEAPONS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!"

Keeper:
The gun fires a burst from the tail's car. Lundquist and Kelley both duck back behind their car.

Rogers:
I try and shoot the guy with thegun.

Keeper:
Danforth fires his shotgun into the other car again. He puts buckshot holes in the roof as he fires high.

Keeper:
BLAM BLAM! Rogers puts two rounds into the car and sees the ducking shooter flinch.

Keeper:
Rogers, their door on your side swings open. The driver comes out with a submachine gun trained in your direction.

Lundquist:
If I have a shot, I'll drill him.

Keeper:
He snarls angrily and looses a burst, crouching and moving forward fast.

Keeper:
Rogers?

Lundquist:
"DROP YOUR WEAPONS NOW!" To Kelly: "How suicidal can these two be?"

Keeper:
Lundquist, you can see the guy's head from the other side of the car, but that's all.

Keeper:
Kelley stands and aims from the shoulder.

Keeper:
BOOM! Maddux fires and misses.

Lundquist:
I draw a bead and wait for a better shot.

Keeper:
Rogers...?

Rogers:
I try and shoot the guy coming at me.

Rogers:
"Federal Agent drop the guns now!"

Keeper:
BLAM! BLAM! Rogers puts a bullet into the man's leg, then another into his body. He shouts and grimaces and goes to his good knee. His burst blasts high of Rogers.

Keeper:
Kelley curses and moves forward at a trot, his gun still held at his shoulder, aiming into the other car.

Lundquist:
I'm going to rush him from behind. "Cover me, Kelly!"

Keeper:
Rogers, you see the other man in the car pile out with his gun pointed at you.

Rogers:
I'm aiming for his legs from cover trying to cripple him.

Keeper:
Kelley fires a burst into the other car, over the heads of the two men. Rogers, the one you shot is still up, snarling and aiming in your direction.

Keeper:
The other one goes into a low crouch.

Rogers:
I put two glazer's into him and he's still up?

Rogers:
"Danforth shoot this guy now!"

Keeper:
The wounded man fires another burst. This one goes wide of Rogers and puts more holes into his car.

Keeper:
The other one fires as he rushes out. The bullets hit Rogers' engine block.

Keeper:
Danforth runs ahead to get a better angle on them.

Keeper:
Maddux keeps firing at the two men.

Lundquist:
I'm sprinting right at the wounded one. I'm going to grapple him.

Rogers:
I'm shooting at the uninjured one

Keeper:
Maddux puts a bullet into the good leg of the wounded man just as Lundquist comes around the car.

Keeper:
Rogers, you fire again and again over your dashboard. You graze the arm of the other one. His burst goes high of you. He darts toward your car, still spraying bullets. You put a round into his shin.

Keeper:
The man goes down with a shout, out of Roger's line of sight.

Keeper:
He twists painfully around, sees Lundquist right there, sees Maddux further off, sees Kelley and Danforth coming around his car from the other side.

Lundquist:
I'm charging him as fast as I can.

Keeper:
He tries to bring his gun up at Lundquist, then he shudders and collapses.

Keeper:
Danforth aims at the man, but doesn't fire as Lundquist gets to him.

Lundquist:
I wrench his gun away.

Keeper:
You get his gun away from him, Lundquist.

Keeper:
Both are injured now, Rogers. You shot one in the leg, then Maddux shot him again in the other leg; then you shot the other one in the leg, the one that Lundquist is on now.

Rogers:
Are either of them shooting at me or anyone else?

Lundquist:
I toss his gun away and cover him with my .45

Keeper:
Rogers, you also put a round into the second one's chest. Lundquist, you see a kevlar vest through a hole in his shirt.

Keeper:
He winces and gasps. His lower leg is a bloody ruin.

Rogers:
Is he down?

Rogers:
If he's down I'm going to rush him and grapple

Keeper:
He winces and gasps. His lower leg is a bloody ruin.

Keeper:
The other one is unconscious or dead a few yards away, both of his legs shot open.

Rogers:
Right I'm heading over with my medical kit to try and keep them in the land of the living.

Lundquist:
"You're under arrest!"

Lundquist:
"Rogers, get over here!"

Rogers:
"Danforth cover the exit of the alley, let us know if anyone comes"

Keeper:
Danforth covers the unconscious one, steps from foot to foot. "Fuckin' A!"

Lundquist:
I also want to look/listen for helicopters, and have whoever is near me do the same...

Keeper:
Lundquist, your man squirms on the ground. You see his right hand feeling around underneath him, under his back.

Lundquist:
I grapple him and pin his arm. "Not so fast, asshole!"

Lundquist:
"Kelly! I need some handcuffs over here!"

Keeper:
Kelley produces a pair of stretch cuffs and unties them.

Keeper:
Lundquist, I missed your response to the man's hand squirming around.

Rogers:
Are either of them shooting at me or anyone else?

Lundquist:
I wanted to grapple him and pin his arm.

Keeper:
Lundquist, you jump on him and pin his arm just as he brings a small handgun out.

Rogers:
Is he down?

Rogers:
If he's down I'm going to rush him and grapple

Keeper:
Lundquist has him pinned. Kelley sets down his gun and leans in with the stretch cuffs.

Lundquist:
I'll wrench this gun away too.

Rogers:
Right I'm heading over with my medical kit to try and keep them in the land of the living.

Keeper:
Then Kelley looks up. "Helicopter coming!"

Rogers:
"Danforth cover the exit of the alley, let us know if anyone comes"

Lundquist:
"I hate it when I'm right... Into the cars, quick!"

Keeper:
Kelley picks up his submachine gun. Danforth jogs the twenty feet or so to the front of the alley and stands against the corner.

Lundquist:
Is my perp cuffed yet? I want to move him towards our car.

Keeper:
Maddux comes over with his pistol out to cover the fallen men. Lundquist, you and Kelley manhandle the cuffed one to your car.

Keeper:
"Shit," says Maddux. His laser sight lights up the other man's forehead.

Keeper:
Rogers, what are you doing?

Keeper:
Rogers . . . ?

Lundquist:
As soon as the first bad guy is in our car I want to hurry over for a quick look in their car. Is there a radio, computer, briefcase, spare SMG magazines, anyting?

Keeper:
You see a toolbox with a handful of spare magazines, as well as some sophisticated communications gear and night-vision goggles.

Keeper:
You hear the sound of a helicopter quite distinctly now.

Lundquist:
Grab all of the above and stuff it into our trunk. Meanwhile, Rogers and Maddux have put the other perp into their car... Right, Rog?

Rogers:
"Lets get them out of here."

Rogers:
I'll grab the other one and lug him to the car

Keeper:
Kelley guns the engine. Maddux looks over from where he's aiming at the other. "Y'all want this one or not?! All right." He reaches down and he and Rogers haul him into the car. The floorboards are covered with blood in both cars almost instantly.

Lundquist:
Can we push their car out of the road? Into an abandoned warehouse or something perhaps? How close is this helicopter?

Keeper:
Danforth piles into the car with Rogers and Maddux.

Keeper:
Kelley shakes his head. "No time for that. They're on us."

Rogers:
I'm grabbing the other guy and getting him cuffed and into the car then trying to keep them both alive

Keeper:
Rogers, you have one guy in your car and the other in Lundquist's car.

Lundquist:
"Okay, we're outta here. We'll split up and hope they only have one helicopter." I get in back and cover the wounded guy closely.

Keeper:
He's pale and still, Lundquist. So's the one in Rogers' car.

Keeper:
Kelley drives around the tails' car, scraping the wall as he does so.

Keeper:
Lundquist, which way are you telling Kelley to drive?

Lundquist:
I call 911 and report hearing automatic weapons fire in the general area as we drive off.

Lundquist:
Drive at random right now, just get us away from here fast.

Keeper:
Kelley drives fast.

Lundquist:
I want to call Osborne and tell him what happened. I won't use any names, in case the wounded guy is faking unconsciousness and can hear me.

Keeper:
Lundquist, you get Osborne on the phone.

Keeper:
He listens close. "Okay," he says. "I'll get a DEA chopper in the vicinity to check out the one you reported."

Lundquist:
We're splitting up, so one of us can lose the pursuing helo.

Keeper:
Rogers, you seeing our words now?

Lundquist:
I'm keeping one eye on the sleeping bad guy, one eye on the the sky for the helo, and talking to Osborne at the same time.

Keeper:
Kelley takes a turn, then takes another, driving deep into Queens.

Rogers:
"Why don't we stick together in one car and head under the Queens tunnel?"

Lundquist:
"You might also want to have FAA look for that helo's transponder, maybe watch where it goes to land, and see if they can't trace back where it came from."

Keeper:
"Will do," says Osborne. "Watch yourselves in the meantime."

Lundquist:
"They could get a ground tail on us before we get to the tunnel. You head that way, we'll go to Laguardia, try to lose them under the air-traffic control umbrella."

Keeper:
Rogers, do you head for the Queens Tunnel and Manhattan?

Rogers:
"Ok. I need a driver If I'm going to fix this guy"

Rogers:
"Danforth?"

Rogers:
I'm assuming I've patched up the other guy as best as I can?

Keeper:
Danforth gets behind the wheel and drives fast for the Queens Tunnel and Manhattan.

Keeper:
Rogers, you go to work on the wounded man in the back seat, but he dies after about five minutes, despite your best efforts and a tourniquet on each leg. He lost too much blood and gone into shock too deeply.

Keeper:
Lundquist, I just got some very weird messages from you.

Rogers:
Right 10 seconds silence then search him.

Keeper:
Rogers, you find a small-caliber handgun on the dead man, and a wallet that identifies him as a licensed private-investigator.

Rogers:
Anything else in his wallet etc?

Keeper:
Some petty cash, but no personal effects whatsoever. Not even a credit card.

Rogers:
I'm phoning Mr. L. "Hello"

Rogers:
"Mr. Vert here, our friend didn't make it any more luck with your colleague?"

Lundquist:
I assume my guy is still breathing?

Keeper:
Lundquist, you check on yours. He's fading fast.

Rogers:
"Where are you, we need one of them"

Lundquist:
Sheesh... "Kelly, we'd better find a doctor, right now."

Keeper:
Kelley says, "We'll have to switch if you want me to look at him. I was a corpsman for six years."

Lundquist:
"Kelly, get us to the closest hospital." I speed dial Osborne again.

Keeper:
He nods and speeds up.

Keeper:
Osborne picks up on the first ring. "Yes?"

Keeper:
Rogers, the black helicopter is sticking with your car.

Lundquist:
"Rogers, I don't think we have time for that. I'm going to take him to an emergency room and get some Marshalls to babysit for him."

Rogers:
"The helicopters with me I'm going to head for the airport, You hightail it to a hospital and don't let him out of your sight."

Lundquist:
"Osborne, my suspect is in a bad way. We're going to take him to an ER. I'm going to place him in custody and get some federal protection for him. We'll cook up a cover story when we need it, but he's sure as hell guilty of attempted murder, for starters."

Rogers:
"can we get the helicopters registration from here Maddux?"

Lundquist:
"Also, Osborne, that helo is following Rogers car right now. Maybe we can have ATC get a transponder fix on it?"

Keeper:
Osborne says, "I'll see what I can do."

Keeper:
Kelley drive fast. A few minutes later he comes to a hard stop in the emergency lane of Lutheran Hospital of Brooklyn.

Lundquist:
Keeper, what channels do I have for getting this guys some protection? Should I call my superiors at Justice, or go through Osborne?

Rogers:
I'm keeping an eye out for tails on the road. But figuring speed is my best asset in loosing the chopper I'm hightailing it to the airport

Keeper:
Rogers, Maddux looks up with binoculars but shakes his head. "No--I can't see the registration."

Rogers:
"Don't worry keep trying, don't have anything that will take it out do you?"

Keeper:
Maddux shakes his head. "No way."

Rogers:
I'm calling the intelligence liasion officer at the airport.

Rogers:
"Pity"

Keeper:
Lundquist, you can get some agents via Justice department, but obviously they won't have any DG clearance if things go wrong.

Keeper:
Rogers, are you going back to JFK, or to LaGuardia? JFK is closer.

Lundquist:
Okay, that will do for starters. Hopefully Osborne can scare up some more friendlies. After all, DG has unlimited resources, right? ;-)

Keeper:
Uh, yeah, unlimited. (smirk)

Rogers:
which ever is closer to the safehouse

Rogers:
can we get paid then?

Keeper:
Danforth turns and heads on another street back eastward toward JFK airport.

Rogers:
;-)

Keeper:
He high-tails it like you said. After about five minutes he takes it through a red light and barely avoids a collision. Then you hear a police siren start up behind you.

Rogers:
I didn't mean speed just hurry

Keeper:
Danforth says, "Shit! Then why didn't you fucking say so?" The police car speeds up to approach.

Lundquist:
("You see, officer, we're being chased by these unmarked helicopters..., Why, there's one right now...") ;-)

Rogers:
"Right, Pull over, we'll just give them a cover story and Fake ID's

Keeper:
Lundquist, Kelley jogs around to open the door and look at the wounded man. "Get a stretcher out here," he says.

Rogers:
"We're rushing to the nearest hospital"

Keeper:
Danforth curses again and pulls over to the curb.

Rogers:
I'll keep doing cpr even though its ponintless

Rogers:
"Hide the guns in the cases, we'l explain them when we have to not now"

Keeper:
The police car pulls up right behind you. Maddux says, "We have a lot of unlicensed guns here, Agent Vert."

Rogers:
"We'll deal with it once we get these cops to escort us to the hospital, don't panic yet."

Keeper:
He starts shoving them into their cases and under the seats.

Rogers:
"Maddux get out and explain what's happening we need an escort."

Keeper:
You hear a cop on a bullhorn behind the car. "Step out of that car right now, driver. Passengers, stay still."

Rogers:
"when your done with the guns"

Rogers:
"I'm a doctor performing CPR I can't stay still!"

Keeper:
Danforth gets out and holds his hands up. "We got a wounded man here! He's dying! We gotta get to the hospital!"

Rogers:
(shouted)

Keeper:
The cops look at each other. One of them comes forward. Both keep their pistols aimed at your car.

Rogers:
"Hurry up this man's not going to last much longer!"

Keeper:
The first cop gets to the car, looks at all the bullet holes and the blood and the dead man, and mutters something foul. He lifts the radio from his shoulder and calls in his name and badge number. "We have a shooting victim en route to--uhh--"

Rogers:
"For god's sake hurry up!"

Keeper:
"Uh--Baptist Medical Center on Dumont. Request back-up at that location."

Rogers:
"Can we go now!?"

Keeper:
He nods. "Get in and drive. Dumont is only four blocks from here. Drive slow. We will be behind you."

Rogers:
"Let's go!"

Rogers:
keeping up the pretence of CPR "Right guys let's think"

Keeper:
Lundquist, Osborne calls as a medical team comes out for your man.

Lundquist:
"Hello?"

Keeper:
Danforth nods and drives. "They are sure as hell gonna search this car."

Rogers:
I'm calling Osbourne.

Rogers:
"Maddux, what fake ID did you bring?"

Keeper:
Lundquist, Osborne says, "ATC says there's no such helicopter."

Rogers:
"Danforth, how about you?"

Keeper:
Osborne says, "Just a minute, it's Michael."

Keeper:
Rogers, you get Osborne on the line. "Yes?"

Rogers:
"Osbourne I've got problems"

Rogers:
explains the situation

Lundquist:
"Really? Can you check military radars? They don't depend on a transponder signal... And it would sure be useful to know where this helo is operating from..."

Keeper:
Maddux and Danforth both have identification as DOJ criminal investigators. Not FBI, regular DOJ.

Lundquist:
(Listening to Osborne's hold music as the nurses wheel the wounded perp into the ER...)

Keeper:
Osborne is on with Rogers: "Get to the hospital. Avoid a confrontation with the police if possible. Tell them that you're all government agents and it was a bust that went bad. You following me, Michael?"

Keeper:
Lundquist, they wheel the man inside. Kelley follows, telling the attendants where and how the man was injured.

Rogers:
"I can probably hold them for a while but you know cops, I may need to let them search the car, we're going to sort out a cover story here now when I know what ID'd the team has if I get arrested I'm calling you and you can Fill in Mr. Green."

Rogers:
"Guys what are your cover ID's we need to get our story straight."

Lundquist:
"Kelly, keep an eye on him! Don't let him out of your sight!" I look around keeping an eye out for tails or shadows.

Keeper:
"DOJ special agents," says Maddux.

Rogers:
"excellent, we'l use the chain of evidence to stop a search then get Mr Green over to cover us."

Rogers:
BTW I'm putting back all the stuff he had on him.

Keeper:
Osborne says, "Hold on." He switches over to Lundquist. "Look, I already followed up on it. That helicopter is not on radar or their transponders."

Rogers:
"Osbourne, we're going to pose as DoJ agents, can you get Mr Green over to the Baptist Medical centre Dumont asap?"

Keeper:
Rogers, you got Osborne's hold music now. ;-)

Rogers:
(can I asssume as I tried to first aid him I had surgical gloves on so no prints?)

Keeper:
Danforth pulls into the emergency lane of the Baptist Medical Center.

Keeper:
Surgical gloves? Luck roll says you strapped them on while you were doing first aid with your kit, yes.

Keeper:
Rogers, the helicopter is nowhere to be seen.

Keeper:
You pull up and a team comes out to take your man inside.

Keeper:
The police car pulls up behind you.

Rogers:
"He's been down about 5 mins CPR since then"

Rogers:
"He's a suspect in a Federal investigation better be carefull!"

Keeper:
Osborne gives Lundquist the 'DOJ investigation' story that Rogers is following.

Keeper:
The doctor and nurses look at each other. Maddux follows him inside.

Keeper:
The two officers get out. "All right," they say warily. "Let's see some ID."

Rogers:
Get out and lock the car

Rogers:
what's maddux and danforths cover names

Keeper:
(Heh--the glass is shattered and there are about twenty holes in the body and passenger door, but it's locked.)

Keeper:
Maddux and Danforth introduce themselves as DOJ agents and give a very cursory cover story.

Rogers:
I show him my DoJ badge

Rogers:
"don't touch the car its evidence"

Keeper:
Within a few minutes, an FBI official calls to follow up on the "case." He verifies the false identities of all of you.

Keeper:
He also indicates that another attorney, Brian Lundquist, is presently occupied with another suspect but will be there shortly.

Keeper:
Lundquist, Kelley calls to tell you that your man in Lutheran is still alive.
