(Operation SANDMAN)

©1998 Shane Ivey

DATE: 5 June 1998 (debriefed 24 APR 1999)
AGENTS: Mark (Brian Lundquist, DOJ), Michael (John Rogers, CIA), Kelley (Sam Dee, AKA David Kelley, USN/CIA)
FRIENDLIES: Connor Danforth, NSA; Oliver Keen, NSA; Michael Cabot (US Army/CIA)
SUMMARY: Operation SANDMAN, debriefing transcript 31: The team regroups and launches a violent raid to recover a source of evidence.
CASE STATUS: Open

Keeper:
The day is slowly, slowly grinding on, seemingly with no end to the action.

Keeper:
We last paused with Cabot, Rogers and Kelley (if that IS your real name...) back in the fire-damaged and gunshot van, scorching blood samples to test for the nasty gunk that remained from TBC badass Jack Melody.

Keeper:
The samples from Cabot and Kelley seemed to turn out clean; a sample from the FBI agent outside turned out to be "infected."

Keeper:
Cabot blasted the gunk with a flamethrower; that was about where we left it.

Keeper:
Outside, the crowds are still thick and the news cameras are still rolling.

Rogers:
I'd hypothesised that it was the same organism as in DM and then explained DM to Cabot and Kelly as they now had a need to know.

Cabot:
All told, how many persons do we have that could be considered potentially infected from the forensic's van?

Keeper:
Kelley, Cabot, and Rogers have been ruled out...

Cabot:
That's right, JT. I was debating you on that until you gave me the full intel. Kelley's still got a contained sample of the infected Feeb's blood, too. Let's keep an eye on that. It's our one sure piece of evidence for future research that has escaped the prying eyes of everyone else.

Keeper:
That leaves Lundquist, Wang, and six of Wang's forensics agents.

Cabot:
Not that I suspect you, but were you in fact tested yet, JT?

Rogers:
Nope lets do it now.

Keeper:
Kelley steps back and glances outside while you draw the blood.

Cabot:
If you're in agreement, let's do a batch test on everyone else quickly here before we run into more unexpected surprises. Then we can unass this AO.

Keeper:
(AO?)

Cabot:
Area of Operation.

Keeper:
(OK) Cabot prepares the ether torch and nods to Kelley to be on guard.

Cabot:
"Watch that sample, too, Kelley."

Rogers:
"Should I drop my guns just in case?"

Keeper:
"I'm on it," he says, stepping away from the doorway again. "FDNY is going to want in here pretty soon."

Cabot:
Better safe than sorry. Let's do this. /he takes the sample and torches it.

Rogers:
"OK, I'm safetying my guns and the M-16 an dputting them in the corner away from me."

Cabot assumes the same precaustions as before, with hand on the gas valve to increase the flame if necessary.

Keeper:
The blood scorches and boils under the heat of the makeshift torch. It quickly boils away to the usual black residue, with no weird effects.

Rogers:
"That's a relief."

Rogers:
"I'll get my guns."

Cabot:
"Okay, great. You're clean. Can you spin some story about this being an biological agent that can result in psychosis? That ought to keep the fire guys back and give us time to test the others."

Keeper:
Kelley nods. "Listen, we need to figure out where we're going. And fast. This is as private as we're going to get anytime soon."

Rogers:
"We already warned them about a possible chemical release, Lundquest is dealing with them at present."

Cabot:
"Let's get those others tested right away before we let this stuff spread any farther."

Rogers:
"Right all we need from this situation is the sample and the three witnesses we were interviewing beforwe hell broke loose for the second time." "As I see it comments?"

Cabot:
"You do want to test the others that were in the van, right?"

Rogers:
"Yes, I'm just thinking about where we go from here."

Keeper:
Kelley nods again. "We need to test all of the FBI team."

Rogers:
"It would be good if you could tie everyone up with that test for a while."

Keeper:
"What about our 'witnesses'? Gant and his group."

Cabot:
"Let's get the testing done ASAP and send Keen and Danforth to babysit the witnesses."

Rogers:
"Once this situation is under control we'l head back over there and continue to interview them."

Rogers:
"Or move them."

Cabot gathers seven specimen plates and seven syringes and a permanent marker. While passing Kelley, he marks the hot specimen FBI Agent "Hot". Then he procedes to the others. "Come on, let's do it."

Rogers:
"Kelly, what going on outside?"

Cabot:
"See if you can get a name on the guy that's infected."

Keeper:
Kelley glances out the door again. "FDNY's asking questions, looks like. I'll check on the agent. But look: we need to decide which of those Breckenridge guys knows something, and we need to get him alone. I don't know how. But talking to them like cops won't get anywhere."

Cabot:
"Let's get a move on. Come on, Doc. We need your expertise again."

Rogers:
"Right what do you want."

Keeper:
Outside, you see that the fire department has brought over a few enclosed gurneys, big rolling plexiglass boxes.

Cabot gathers all of the potentially contaminated personnel together and begins to mark a number on there forehead with the marker, making corresponding markings on the specimen plates. He also gets there last names and first initials and puts that on the plates. "Doc, start drawing samples. Keen, Danforth, be ready with your weapons."

Cabot:
I say we let the HazMat guru's put the contaminated Fed in the bubble-box. It will contain the organism somewhat.

Cabot:
Do the HazMat guys have any decon corridor established yet?

Keeper:
The firefighters and cops and civilians nearby watch the whole spectacle curiously, Cabot, especially with Keen and Danforth trailing you with shotguns.

Cabot:
Don't they remember the raid Lundquist mentioned, with cops shooting cops?

Keeper:
The whole thing is still rough: they have a sequence of emergency vehicles and crews established, but no physical corridor of egress or anything like that. It's been too chaotic.

Cabot:
You still here, JT?

Keeper:
The lead fireman approaches again as you're drawing samples from the FBI agents. "What's the plan, here?" he asks. "You see what a mess this is. We've got people in place and ready to roll, but nobody knows what to do."

Cabot:
"I think we may have developed an effective field test for exposure. Give us a minute and we'll start clearing the area. Those not affected can go through a standard decon."

Rogers:
"Keep up the standard routine for A HAZMAT incident though until we're sure."

(Keeper whispered to Cabot): Would standard decon take place at a hospital?

(Cabot whispered to Keeper): No, they'll construct a corridor out of the Hot Zone with inflatable structures or pools and have guys dressed in protective clothing rinse and scrub them in the Warm Zone before letting them out to the Cold Zone.

Keeper:
"Right. You do your tests; I'll get the tents set up so we can move on with this mess."

Cabot:
"If it's okay with you, Doc, why not let them package this infected one."

Rogers:
"OK." "I'm going to find the FBI guy I took this M16 off and get it back to him."

Cabot:
If I have the blood samples, I'll pull Kelley back to the van with me and leave Keen and Danforth to guard the potentially infected.

Keeper:
Okay. Over the next hour, you collect samples from Lundquist, Keen, Danforth, and each member of Wang's forensics team. All of the tests come up negative. Meanwhile, FDNY sets up tents and inflated corridors, one tent to the next, filling the streets nearby.

Keeper:
NYPD and ESU remain on-scene, with sharpshooters in position on nearby buildings.

Cabot:
Gathering the group in a huddle, "Any other evidence besides this hot sample you guys need before we get out of here?"

Keeper:
The news crews are having a field day. National news has been here for a while, now, and the scene is showing nationwide and anywhere else that gets Headline News.

Cabot:
What a goat-fuck.

Cabot:
So much for my being incognito.

Keeper:
The police commissioner and fire chief have given a preliminary conference already, outlining possible ties between the violence at TBC with the drug-ambushes in Queens that killed so many police officers.

Cabot:
"Where is this infected victim going?"

Keeper:
They are quick to keep it vague, though, and to emphasize that TBC itself has proven completely forthcoming.

Keeper:
Where is your group gathering to confer?

(Cabot whispered to Keeper): To Kelley: (pointing to the specimen in his possession) I think that might be the golden worm to get our TBC birds to sing."

Rogers:
's head back to the building with all the evacuees from Breckenridge."

(Keeper whispered to Cabot): He smiles grimly. "Shit. We can make them talk plenty if we can get them alone."

Keeper:
Is that where you're getting together? In the building with the Breckenridge personnel?

Cabot:
To the firefighters packaging the patient: "Where's he being transported to?"

Rogers:
"Yes there's bound to be a room there where we can hash things out and decide what to do next in private2

(Cabot whispered to Keeper): Not to make our lives more miserable, but we're gonna be nekked when we get out of decon!

Keeper:
The firefighter says, "He's headed for the Medical Arts Center on 57th if he gets through decon."

Keeper:
(You're talking to the firefighters before you all get to a meeting room inside.)

Rogers:
"Right can we get him tested before he goes off site?"

Cabot:
"Oh, we know he's hosting."

Rogers:
"Did we get a test?"

Cabot:
"Yeah, that would be the more exciting one."

Cabot:
"We've also got a remaining specimen from him for future analysis."

Rogers:
"Oh right sorry".

Rogers:
"You best give them instruction for strict quarantine of the subject, Kelly think someone should accompany him?"

Cabot:
"You're the MD."

Rogers:
"I don't want him wandering off like the last witnesses we sent to the hospital."

(Cabot whispered to Keeper): Are we through decon already?

Keeper:
Kelley says, "Whatever you guys say. You know the procedures better than I do."

(Keeper whispered to Cabot): Not yet.

Rogers:
"Ok I want the infected FBI agent uder a total quarantine as soon as he goes into the perspex stretcher no one goes near him alone." "And I want a guard on him at all times he could become a threat to those caring for him."

Rogers:
"I'll be down as soon as I can after the situation here has been brought under control, and I've had a chance to talk to a few people."

Keeper:
Clarifying the scene: FDNY has set up a perimeter around the hot zone, where you caught the infection. The only way out is through the decon corridor, into the "warm zone" tent and then out.

Cabot:
(Whispering to JT & Kelley) "The sooner we get out of here, the sooner we can develop a plan to recover that guy. Judging by how badly they wanted the last guy, we need to move fast on that."

Rogers:
"These precautions are to be followed at all times even outside the Warm zone disinfection tent."

Keeper:
The fireman nods, Rogers. "Yessir. We'll keep him in the tent until you want to examine him. ESU has some men who can do guard duty."

Rogers:
"Actually I think it's better if one of our team escorted him given their familiarity with this problem."

Rogers:

Rogers:
Out of character can Danforth be assigned to that I'm assuming he has DoJ cover ID

Keeper:
Danforth is still under his DOJ cover.

Keeper:
Can he be assigned to guard the infected agent? Yes--this part of it is DOJ jurisdiction, certainly.

Keeper:
Kelley has been operating under an Army cover (security from USARMIID), so he could take the guard assignment just as easily.

Rogers:
"Ok Danforth your the point man on this witness I guess for want of a better word, report in regularly on the hour via mobile phone and if anything happens stall and get us on the line immediatly." "OK any questions?"

Cabot:
"No, Kelley stays with us. He and I are not on the federal books here, so we aren't going to leave a paper trail if things get hot with our "witnesses". "

Keeper:
Danforth says, "Shit. All right, let's get this guy inside." He checks his shotgun and motions the firemen toward the tent.

Rogers:
"Gentlemen, conference?"

Keeper:
You'll need to go through the decon procedure to get out to the building where the Breckenridge people are gathered.

Cabot:
"Let's get out of the public eye and behind closed doors, then conference. Who knows who's watching us and with what eavesdropping equipment.

Keeper:
Into the first corridor, then stripped down and washed and examined... it's a big procedure.

Keeper:
Rogers, the close inspection reminds you that your arm is still hurting like hell when you have time to think about it; it ought to be in a sling, in fact.

Rogers:
OK I'll get it slung up but I want the sling so that if I have to I have full mobility in the arm."

Keeper:
Kelley is bruised and cut in half a dozen minor places; likewise with Lundquist, though he's taken harder hits. His head is still angrily swollen from that rifle-butt, and his left hand is badly cut from the rooftop fight.

Keeper:
And Lundquist isn't in the best of shape to handle the punishment. He's nowhere near as fit as the other three of you.

Cabot:
If we're in agreement on waiting on the pow-wow, I head down the decon corridor, happy that I am thus-far uninjured.

Keeper:
So... you're all stripped, washed, poked and prodded, given ill-fitting new clothes and handed your weapons and phones again afterward.

Cabot:
Now, off to the building where I wait outside for the others as I have no idea what our "witnesses" look like.

Rogers:
"Wait one second does anyone have a pad?"

Keeper:
It's late in the day, you realize, as you step out of the last tent and into the "cold zone" of the main perimeter, into the view of crowds and reporters at the barricades again.

Cabot:
"Yeah, but it's a little wet."

Rogers:
"Great." rogers writes the following and shows all those in attendance CHECK THE CLOTHES FOR BUGS

Rogers:
"When we get to a privet location." Cabot goes to his vehicle to grab some dry, respectable clothes, a dry clip for his sidearm, etc. Then returns to the building with his FBI jacket on once again.

Keeper:
Almost immediately after leaving, Lundquist is signaled by other agents and cops. He sighs and goes to conduct PR for the op, to talk to the Attorney General and deal with NYPD and generally get the thing sorted out.

Cabot:
I immediately go to a restroom to change and do a sweep for bugs.

Keeper:
The rest of you make it inside the building and stake out a private office and sweep it.

Keeper:
You don't find any bugs in your clothes, or in the room you've gotten.

Cabot:
Spot Hidden for my cell phone.

Keeper:
Any preferences on your conference room?

Rogers:
something without windows

DICE for Cabot: (1d100) = [ 92 ]

DICE for Cabot: (1d100) = [ 65 ]

Cabot:
Oh well.

Keeper:
You take the phone apart enough to be safe, Cabot, but you don't find anything suspicious.

Keeper:
Kelley sits heavily in a padded chair and leans back, stretching.

Cabot:
We aren't with the "witnesses" yet, are we?

Keeper:
No. It's just the three of you.

Keeper:
(Four if you have Keen with you--or did he go with Danforth?)

Keeper:
(Or did he stay with Wang and company?)

Cabot:
I think Danforth went alone.

Rogers:
That was the intention.

Keeper:
So is Keen with you?

Cabot:
Are we sure the "witnesses' haven't been swiped in our absence. They had all the diversion they needed if that was their intention.

Keeper:
Last you heard, they were with the rest of the Breckenridge staff, awaiting debriefing by the FBI and/or NYPD.

Rogers:
"I'd assume Keen is with us as long as that dosen't look too overtly suspicious2

Keeper:
OK... It's just the four of you in the conference room, then.

Keeper:

Cabot:
"Better, see if our birds are still in the nest."

Keeper:
Kelley says, "You interviewed them before, Rogers. Want to check on it?"

Rogers:
"Ok I'll go and check with the agent I spoke to before.2

Cabot:
"If they're still here, I suggest we pick the most suspect candidate and "relocate" him to your safe house. Unless this op's been compromised above and beyond the level it already appears, that's the one safe place to interrogate him further and make future plans."

Keeper:
Rogers, you see the same group of agents still downstairs. The Breckenridge staff is getting impatient--they've been sitting in that cafeteria for hours, now."

Rogers:
Ok what I'm planning to do is this:

Keeper:
Kelley says, "True. But can we disapear him like that?"

Keeper:
"These guys are high-profile, right now."

Cabot:
"He's gotta go somewhere from here. We could nab him on the way."

Keeper:
Kelley says, "Yeah, we COULD, but it'll look real suspicious. We'd have to make it look like the bad guys grabbed him, maybe."

Keeper:
"Or like he skipped out and fled."

Cabot:
"Yeah, but you and I aren't. I saw your style, you ain't USAMRIID and you definately ain't Fed. I'm guessing Marine Recon, Ranger, maybe. They got a face on us, but who the hell knows us for real?"

Rogers:
"Why not just invite them along and use the leverage we have on the first one I interviewd to get him to encourage the other two?"

Rogers:
"He knows something is wrong and wants to get to the bottom of it we're only after one of them, we can have anice friendly chat then cut em loose and grab him when we want him if we think its necessary."

Cabot:
"It's these other guys acting in an official capacity that have to shy away from "appearances of impropriety". Shit, if you're what I think you are you're in violation of the Posse Comitatus already."

Rogers:
"When I say grab I'm just talking wildly, we'l get him picked up for another interrogation session."

Rogers:
"But I'd like to see if he thinks he has something to hide by refusing to come with us."

Keeper:
Kelley laughs. "No argument, there. But I'm talking about Howell and Gant and that crew. They're the ones who are high profile. If we grab one, that's a major witness that DOJ will want to track down."

Cabot:
"Who's your weakest link here, JT? Who do you think is dirtiest?

Rogers:
"I'm suspicious of Ted Howell's he's the guy in charge of our suicide victim inside the breckenridge corp, and he's mentioned in the files we recovered.""

Cabot:
"Is he the same one that's bending toward cooperating, or is that another one?"

Rogers:
"We haven't spoken to Howell's yet, the one we've had a chat with is co-operating so we just use that to get him to encourage the others to go with us."

Cabot:
"I thought I remembered you saying you had an inside guy out of one of them." (JTRogers whispered to Keeper): Didn't want to start moving anywhere in case he did arrive.

Rogers:
"An inside guy?"

Cabot:
"Someone inclined to roll-over and cooperate with your investigation."

Rogers:
"well that would be the first man of the file we recovered but he's not dirty in my opinion just someone decieved by Howells maybe, he wants to find out whats going on and so will co-operate with us."

Keeper:
"That's assuming he's not snowing the hell out of us," adds Kelley.

Rogers:
"Lundquiest shook him up pretty good, I'm more inclined to suspect Howell's because it makes running private ooperations out of BCNY easier for whoever is doing it than if he's not on their side."

Cabot:
"Look, we're being out-skunked and out-foxed precisely because we're playing this by the official, hand-tied, angle. They have had a head's-up on practically everything you've done so far, it sounds like it's time to be a little more "unconventional."

Rogers:
"You haven't seen everything we've done in this investigation, we've been unconventional."

Keeper:
Kelley nods. "The trick is to keep it quiet. That voodoo house is on CNN, for God's sake. You can pick me and Lundquist out in the video if you try."

Rogers:
"The problem is over exposure, we can't go outside the law at present because ther's too much law around."

Rogers:
"We need to calm things down and decide where we go from here."

Rogers:
"What about locating those Breckenridge employees that were taken from the hospital and paying whoever has them a visit, with that 'torch' we recovered"

Keeper:
Kelley shakes his head and scowls. "How are we gonna calm things down? We got twenty-something dead cops in the last week."

Cabot:
"I see two options here: interrogate the shit out of the weakest link here, whover that may be. Get him to roll-over. Then bug him and set up a meeting from which he'll be "nabbed". Shit, sell him on federal protection from the shitstorm that's gonna come down on TBC. Once we have him, he can arrange meetings with the others and we can move on them individually. Real quiet-like. "

Rogers:
"I meant switching the focus of our investigation to a less exposed line of attack."

Keeper:
Kelley nods and sits back again.

Cabot:
"I can provide security for the pick-up and any subsequent meetings if we dictate the location."

Rogers:
"Look if we go in threatening any of those Breckenridge employees their lawyers will stamp down on us."

Cabot:
"We can get him to roll-over. Once he's done that, he'll want your protection from whoever's running the show."

Rogers:
"We need to treat them like homicide suspects and provide them with an 'out' from their problems, I did that with the first one and he's helping us now we move to the suspect one and if he dosen't go for it your free to bug the shit out of him."

Rogers:
"and then we get creative again."

Cabot:
"What's the first one's name?"

Rogers:
i've been trying to avoid that as i can't rember :-)

Cabot:
"Gant?"

Keeper:
Gant was the first that Rogers interviewed. He's the general manager of the New York office.

Keeper:
Rogers and Lundquist then talked to Reggie Sidle, Sales Director for the office.

Keeper:
(This was in session 29.)

Cabot:
"Then Gant's the man we want. Once we have him at the safe house, he can call the others to request clandestine meetings at which we have a shot at nabbing them."

Rogers:
"I think we should interrogate them here first, then move to that plan."

Keeper:
Kelley says, "That brings us back to, How are we going to get him alone?"

Rogers:
"Or we could let Mr. L handle that when he's finished witht the PR, while we arrange to get Gant to the safe house to set up the mettings where we can grab him."

Rogers:
sorry that should have been we can grab his colleages

Cabot:
"Yeah, I agree. If he rolls-over, he isn't going to want it to be public-knowledge. We make an agreement with him to take custody of him in some out-of-the way place that WE choose and secure."

Rogers:
"Exactly anyone watching the sight and there is bound to be someone will see him leave unmollested"

Keeper:
"So. What's next?"

Cabot:
"The idea is to get him to come voluntarily. Any TBC bystanders he brings along that get whacked just makes it look more believable that he was taken out by his own. The enemy should be left reeling after that. If the pick-up is compromised, we wave him off and try again later."

Rogers:
"OK do you want to arrange that with him then?"

Cabot:
"No, he needs to believe this is official witness-protection stuff. We need him to roll, first. Once that's accomplished, we'll set up a pick-up."

Cabot:
"Let's finish interrogating the others, then return to him. Make sure we don't miss anything. Do I understand you have some files already?"

Rogers:
"No we have one file we recovered from the computers which showd a private operation being run out of BCNY."

Rogers:
"Which is why I'm suspicios of Ted Howells, as he ran operations."

Cabot:
"Then let's finish this interrogation. Kelley and I have no idea where you left off, but I'm sure we can chime in if need be."

Rogers:
"Mr. L was running th interrogation when the shit hit the fan."

Keeper:
"He was talking to Sidle, right? I don't think he talked to Gant."

Cabot:
"We may also want to begin thinking about getting that contaminated fed out of the hospital before the friendly-neighborhood marshalls come for him again."

Rogers:
"That's right."

Keeper:
"How are we going to divert him?"

Rogers:
"I don't know, anyone fancy car jacking an ambulance?" Rogers smiles.

Cabot:
"I haven't really formulated any plans on that one yet."

Keeper:
Kelley snorts. "Yeah, *that* won't make the news."

Rogers:
"Maybe it will divert attention from this mess" ;-)

Cabot:
"It's safe to assume he's already in the hospital anyway. He'll have to come out of there. "

Keeper:
"The sooner the better. You get him around doctors, sooner or later one will notice what's going on in him."

Cabot:
"Are there any "official" channels that can be instituted to get him into the hands of our people?

Cabot:
"Before the enemy's done the same, like last time?"

Rogers:
"Kelly could you use your USARMIID id to secure the patient?"

Keeper:
Kelley says, "Probably." He smiles at Cabot, "Even if they're not too convincing."

Keeper:
"But, yeah. There's a friendly in the Institute we can maybe activate to make it look more credible."

Cabot:
"Yeah, but CDC would be more plausible."

Rogers:
"Right so we should get the FBI guy out and to the friendly FBI lab or ..."

Keeper:
Kelley shrugs. "If we can get a CDC cover to sign the papers, that's fine by me. Whatever works to get him someplace private."

Keeper:
Rogers, your phone buzzes.

Cabot:
"That Fed's a living-breathing supply of biologic truth serum if you ask me. Once we start picking up TBC honchos, that may be our best method for getting them to talk."

Rogers:
"Hang on guys wait while I take this call."

Rogers:
"Rogers..."

Rogers:
or whatever the cover of the moment is ;-)

Keeper:
It's Danforth. "We got a fuckin' problem here at the hospital, boss. The docs here just got a call to prep the patient. CDC is on the way to pick him up."

Cabot:
To Kelley: "There's also the family-member leverage. Find out if Howell and the rest have kids and threaten to expose them."

Rogers:
"Right we'll be there right fucking now stop them if at all possible."

Keeper:
Kelley nods and picks up his phone. He stops in mid-dial as he hears Rogers.

Rogers:
"That was danforth, we've got trouble lets get down there noew Mr. L can handle the interrogations here."

Rogers:
"CDC are apparently on the way to collect the patient lets get there and find out who they are, get body armour and lets go."

Cabot:
"Time to put on the CDC cover. Let's go." I phone Lundquist and tell him our plans for Gant so far.

Cabot:
"My range rover's right outside."

Rogers:
"wait if they know CDC are on the way we just show up and bluff them, Kelly how traceable is your CDC ID?"

Rogers:
"We just show up get the guy and go."

Keeper:
You fill Lundquist in on the move. There's plenty of room in the Range Rover for the four of you.

Keeper:
Kelley says, "I'm USARMIID, not CDC."

Rogers:
"Damn, Ok er"

Keeper:
He holds a heavy black duffel bag on his shoulder as he jogs with you for the cars.

Cabot:
Speed off toward Medical Arts Center.

Rogers:
"How about following the 'CDC' people and the patient, we'l need another car, I'll grab the one with the you know what in better to get that out of here anyway."

Rogers:
"Keep in touch via the phones"

Cabot:
You lost me there.

Rogers:
when we arrived here we all turned up in two cars with a bomb to plant which we hid in the car can't leave it lying aroundcan we

Cabot:
"They're probably coming via chopper."

Cabot:
"Yeah, that would probably be a good idea. . ."

Rogers:
"Fuck it ok, lets just get down there."

Keeper:
Traffic moves at a crawl trying to get out of the region, but after several endless minutes you manage to get to a less-trafficked street. You keep talking on the phones.

(To Keeper) DICE for Keeper: (1d100) = [ 18 ]

Cabot:
Where's the helo-pad at Medical Arts?

Rogers:
"I've just had a radical thought."

Keeper:
It takes some rough driving to make up the time, but you manage to not draw police attention en route. It's about ten blocks to the Medical Arts Center.

Keeper:

Cabot:
"Don't say you want to blow up the helicopter."

Rogers:
"Could solve some problems very quickly and we do have a bomb going spare."

Keeper:
The helo-pad is up top, on the roof of a central building. There are attached buildings across the street, connected by over-the-street enclosed walkways.

Keeper:
(The bomb was a fake, right?)

Rogers:
No real

Keeper:
(Shit, I thought it was fake. OK.)

Rogers:
We got Kelly to set it up with some plastique so that when the bomb squad went in they'd find something and we'd have tome to search properly

Keeper:
(Drive carefully... ;-)

Rogers:
"Let me speak to Kelly as second Cabot."

Rogers:
(mirror signal manouver, mirror signal manouver)

Keeper:
(Though Kelley didn't do anything with the bomb, except get somebody in the CIA to put it together.)

Cabot:
"It would make a swell diversion for a patient switch, I'll give you that. But might as well call CNN and tell them you're here."

Rogers:
(as long as he knows how to set it or blow it on remote)

Rogers:
"Unfortunatly, I'm not thinking about switching the patient, I'm thinking about putting it in his quaratine bed"

Rogers:
"We have a sample of the stuff in his blood anyway, so what use is he going to be."

Rogers:
"Let me speak to Kelly."

Cabot:
"Drop Kelly and I off at the parking garage, we'll create a diversion. If a switch is not an option, blow him up if you want."

Cabot:
"But that's awful messy and public...."

Rogers:
"I'm going to need Kelly your going to get Danforth who''s there already."

Rogers:
"Not if it goes off 10 mins after they take off."

Cabot:
"You want me to snag the Fed if I can?"

Rogers:
"Would be nice to save him yeah but they arn't going to fly away wiithout him and how do we sneak a bomb onto the chopper otherwise"

Keeper:
The Med Arts Center comes into view as you round a corner and skip past a yellow light turning red.

Rogers:
"Kelly, how is the bomb set? Remote or timer?"

Keeper:
"Timer," he says through Cabot.

Rogers:
"Oh and gloves on from this point I think gentlemen."

Rogers:
"Pity, I wanted to set it so they have time to get where they are going did we find out where the first lot of patients were relocated to?"

Cabot:
"I'll do my best." I pull into the parking garage (sub-floor, right?) and park the rover illegally near the elevators on one of them (name the sub-floor, Keeper). I put the keys inside the gas cap.

Keeper:
Cabot, you pull up at the elevators on level G-2. Rogers, where are you and Keen driving?

Cabot:
I enter an elevator, unsafety my pistol and get on the phone to Danforth.

Rogers:
we're heading straight to the underground car park need some privacy to move the bomb and need to meet up with kelly.

Keeper:
Kelley follows, Cabot. He quickly checks the submachine gun in his duffel bag.

Keeper:

Rogers:
Rogers phones Mr. Lundquiest

Keeper:
(Sorry, got confused--Cabot, you're going alone and leaving Kelley with the car?)

Cabot:
I didn't know he was with me. Come on, Kelley!!!!

Keeper:
Quick clarification: Cabot & Kelley were in one car. Rogers & Keen are in the other car, with the bomb.

Rogers:
yo

Cabot:
JT's already with Danforth? I thought we were supposed to be going up to him?

Keeper:
Both cars pulled into the parking garage. Cabot parked at the elevators on level G-2. Rogers, are you parking alongside him, or someplace else?

Rogers:
Rogers wants to meet up with Kelly and wants the others to get up to the patients room and stall if necessary

Rogers:
I'm parking away from any security cameras and no next to him

(JTRogers whispered to Keeper): I'm going to loose shit loads of san right?

Keeper:
So, you park separately, but Keen goes with Cabot at a run. Kelley stays with Rogers.

Rogers:
Have I got through to Mr. L yet?

Cabot:
We're on our way up, then, right? Is Danforth on the line yet? I need to know where the fed is.

Keeper:
Rogers, you get Lundquist on the phone. He says he'll ask about the witness, but don't hold your breath. He says the AG is getting involved in this thing personally.

Keeper:
Cabot, you get Danforth on the phone. "Sixth floor," he says. "Shit... here's the docs to move this guy out. Should I sit on him?"

Cabot:
"Stall. . ." To Keen, "You packing?"

Rogers:
"Lundquiest how far away flying time was the place the helicopter you followed's landig site?"

Keeper:
Keen pats a pistol holstered at his back.

Rogers:
"Kelly we're going to get one shot at this, set that thing for 10 mins but don't arm it untill we're ready, Mr. L may give me a better countdown time soon."

Cabot:
As soon as the elevator door opens, I move out and ask Danforth for directions. (JTRogers whispered to Keeper): If he can't we're heading up now

Keeper:
Lundquist tells Rogers, "About twenty miles out."

Rogers:
"OK thanks Mr. L"

Keeper:
Kelley nods and sets the timer. He looks very, very uncomfortable.

Rogers:
"Kelly the landing site was about 20 miles out from the other hospital guestimate the time it'l take the helicopter to get ther and set it for a minute under that."

Rogers:
"Let's go now."

Rogers:
Rogers calls Cabot.

Keeper:
Cabot, Danforth directs you down the hall and around several corners, while you hear him arguing with doctors in the background.

Keeper:
Then you get a Call Waiting signal from Rogers.

Cabot:
/Flash/ "Yeah?" How many doctors, Keeper? Other's?

Rogers:
"We're heading up to you and the surprise package for our friends is with us, see if you can find somewhere to hide it untill its time for their surprise."

Keeper:
You just hear it over the phone as you jog down the corridors, Cabot. It sounds like there are several people involved in the argument.

(JTRogers whispered to Keeper): sorry that should have come out when i was talking to Cabot on the phone

Cabot:
Come around the corner, what do I see?

Cabot:
"Let me see what we've got here." (To JT)

Keeper:
Cabot and Keen reach the room, finally; the agent's gurney is alone there, in a room lined with cabinets and wash basins and emergency equipment. Danforth is standing with his shotgun resting on the gurney's plastic lid, shouting at three doctors and a couple of security guards and two FBI agents in black suits.

Keeper:
"Bullshit," Danforth says, "You ain't taking him anywhere until I hear from my supervisor!"

Keeper:
"Dammit," one of the agents says, "Get out of the way so we can get this guy someplace where they can treat him!"

Keeper:
"We got approval from the AG's office on the transfer, you idiot!" says the other agent in Danforth's face.

Cabot:
I approach the room. "SAC Devereaux, what's the problem here?"

Keeper:
The FBI agents turn, look at you and Keen, and look confused. "Who the hell are you?"

Keeper:
The doctors keep yelling at Danforth. "We can't *treat* this man here! Get out of the way so we can get him up to CDC!"

Keeper:
Rogers, you and Kelley are heading up the elevator now. Kelley's carrying the 50-pound "package" in his bag.

Cabot:
(I'm wearing my FBI jacket) "Get your asses to the elevator bank and secure it! The chopper's on the pad! I'll handle this dipshit." I draw my weapon and aim it Danforth.

Rogers:
am I still in contact with Cabot?

Keeper:
The agents back up, wide-eyed. "God damn it!" "Put that weapon down! Give me your fucking name, agent!"

Keeper:
Danforth says, "Shit!" and lifts his hands, leaving the shotgun on the gurney's lid.

Cabot:
Nod at Danforth and his shotgun. Deck the guy yelling at me.

Keeper:
The doctors back up, panicked. The two security guards look completely overwhelmed. One puts a hand on the revolver at his hip, the other lifts his hands placatingly.

Keeper:
(Roll that Punch attack, Cabot--you'll get a bonus for surprise.)

DICE for Cabot: (1d100) = [ 79 ]

Rogers:
"Kelly, that timer can't start accidentally can it?"

Keeper:
Kelley says, "I sure as hell hope not."

Rogers:
"Oh Well."

DICE for Keeper: (1d100) = [ 13 ]

Keeper:
Cabot, your man's reflexes are good. You swing hard at him but he skips back instinctively, without even time to cuss.

Keeper:
Danforth grabs the shotgun and whips it around to stock-club the other agent. The doctors shout, "Jesus!"

Cabot:
What's everyone else doing?

Rogers:
Riding the elevator

Cabot:
When I can, I train my weapon back on my opponent. Is he wearing body armor?

Keeper:
The security guards look shocked. The one who had a hand on his gun blinks and fumbles to unsnap it and whip it out. The other one backs up and puts a hand on his holster, shouting at you to take it easy. Keen draws his pistol and draws a bead on the first guard. The air gets real tense.

DICE for Keeper: (1d100) = [ 52 ]

DICE for Keeper: (1d8) = [ 5 ]

DICE for Keeper: (1d100) = [ 99 ]

Keeper:
Danforth clubs his agent a glancing blow against his neck, knocking him down hard.

Cabot:
"Everybody, down on the ground!" Is my opponent wearing body armor?

Keeper:
Cabot, your target, the one who ducked your punch, goes for his pistol. It looks like he's wearing a kevlar vest.

Cabot:
Shoot him in the chest, to disable him.

DICE for Cabot: (1d100) = [ 23 ]

Keeper:
BLAM!

Keeper:
His eyes widen in shock and he flops back and lands on his ass.

Keeper:
(What kind of pistol are you carrying, Cabot?)

Cabot:
"Everybody, drop your fucking weapons! Connor, move this guy to the elevators!" I kick his weapon away.

Keeper:
Rogers, you and Kelley hear a gunshot from the direction you're heading.

Keeper:
People scream.

Cabot:
A Czech CZ75

Rogers:
"Oh Fuck, that thing will it go off it hit by bullets?"

Keeper:
(Is that 9mm?)

Keeper:
One guard goes down to his knees, still waving his hand placatingly. The other takes his hand from his belt and raises it, looking like he can't decide whether he's scared or ready to make a move.

Cabot:
(2 shots, 1d10)

Keeper:
Kelley says, "No--it's triggered by electricity, not by impact. I think."

Cabot:
Yeah, that's a 9mm

Keeper:
The guard who Danforth clubbed staggers to his knees and looks up. "You assholes--what the fuck is this?"

Rogers:
"Kelly, I hope you right, when we get out of this lift we're going into a gunfight you got your vest on man?"

Keeper:
Kelley nods. "I sleep in it on this fucking op."

Cabot:
"I want everyone on the floor, now! Do not fuck with me! Lose your weapons! You too, rentacops!"

Keeper:
Danforth kicks the wheel-locks on the gurney and shoves it away from the wall, clumsily holding his shotgun in place on top of it.

Rogers:
"I'm going to join you in taking that precaution, lets take a peak out of the lift and see what's happening before we start shooting but guns ready anyway."

Cabot:
If all comply, I police up their weapons and kick them out into the hall.

Keeper:
The FBI agent holds his hands on top of his head and stays down. "You just shot a federal officer, asshole," he says, furious. He doesn't interfere when you take his pistol.

Cabot:
"Good thing he's wearing a vest then, huh? Give me your cell phones and radios!"

Keeper:
Rogers, you and Kelley look out as your elevator opens. First thing you see is doctors and nurses and others looking terrified and laying low, all staring down the hall. In that direction you see Danforth huffing and puffing as he pushes the gurney along the hall.

Cabot:
I quickly check their ankles for backups.

Cabot:
Then stomp on their commo stuff.

(JTRogers whispered to Keeper): "I guess I'll hold the elevatoer the eh Kelly" Rogers Smiles

Rogers:
"I guess I'll hold the elevator then eh Kelly?" Rogers Smiles

Keeper:
Cabot, your people turn over their phones and radios and you stomp it into shards. None of them are holding backup weapons, though one of the agents was carrying an "asp" at his hip.

Keeper:
Kelley jogs out into the hall, dumps his bag on top of the gurney and helps Danforth shove it into the elevator.

Rogers:
"Which floor Gentlemen please?"

Keeper:
A woman screams again, watching the procession in the hall..

Cabot:
If there's a phone in the room, I destroy it, then shut them in the room and lock the door if possible. Doctor's too. Then i dial up the boys.

Keeper:
Rogers, Cabot phones as you get the gurney into the elevator.

Cabot:
I grab the nearest laundy basket and chuck the confiscated weapons into it and pull the back out, throwing it over my shoulder. To Keen, "Let's go."

Rogers:
"Expreess Elevator company how can I help your escape?"

Keeper:
Keen nods and follows your lead, Cabot. "We better move fast. No way will those men hold still for long."

Cabot:
"G-2. The Rover's there. Let me know when you get there. I got one more surprise left. Leave that bomb somewhere useful on the way out."

Rogers:
"No this is a hospital."

Rogers:
"I'm a doctor I'm not killing patients"

Cabot:
"I mean outside, as a diversion."

Rogers:
"Ok you coming to the lift we can hold it for you?"

Cabot:
"Play it by ear."

Keeper:
Kelley says, "There's cameras all over the place here, dammit. Our covers are fucked."

Rogers:
"Your funeral."

Rogers:
Rogers presses the button marked G-2

Keeper:
You push the button, and THE ELEVATOR EXPLODES!!

Keeper:
Just kidding.

Rogers:
we're on an express elevator to hell GOING DOWN!

Rogers:
me too

Cabot:
I run down the nearest stair case and proceed to move down....fast.

Keeper:
The doors close and the elevator heads down. It goes down three floors... then it stops.

Rogers:
"Kelly where would the security camera be monitored"

Rogers:
"Fuck"

Rogers:
Rogers presses the button like crazy

Cabot:
"What's wrong, Rogers?" (On the phone)

Rogers:
"The lift's fucking stopped"

Keeper:
Kelley shakes his head. "Central console, probably." He checks a directory on the elevator wall. "Administration's on B-1, right under the ground floor."

Keeper:
The elevator doors open. Outside you see a family of three and a doctor with a clipboard, waiting to come aboard.

Cabot:
"We're on our way."

Keeper:
On the intercom, you hear the alert go out: "Security to sixth floor, security to sixth floor!"

Rogers:
"Sorry get the next one please"

Keeper:
Kelley angrily pushes the "Close Door" button.

Rogers:
presses the door close button while banging head against wall

Keeper:
The doors slide shut. Kelley says, "Security's probably in the Admin wing, floor b-1. If you want to go there, we need a fast plan to get in and out."

Rogers:
"I'm going to head over to the admin section with and try to get the tapes if possible don't wait for me, Kelly come with me and bring the surprise."

Keeper:
Keen says, "What are we doing with the patient?"

Cabot:
We're still moving down, I'm still wearing my FBI jacket.

Rogers:
"I'd don't fucking know did you have a plan when you started this"

Keeper:
(That was Danforth, not Keen, sorry, Rogers.)

Keeper:
Cabot and Keen are jogging down the stairs and clear another level.

Rogers:
"Sorry, you just try and get him out inconspicously" Rogers shakes his head

Keeper:
Danforth says, "Shit... this thing's huge. We gonna steal an ambulance or something?"

Cabot:
On the phone to Rogers: "Tell him to get the guy in the rover, dump him in the back. Fuck the container."

Rogers:
"Cabot says dump the box and just get him into the rover."

Keeper:
Danforth takes a breath and nods. The elevator doors open on B-1. You see a hall with nice carpet and textured wallpaper. To your left you see a reception desk. Two security guards are standing there on the phones, talking loud and fast.

Keeper:

Rogers:
"Kelly I don't think we;ve got time to do anything about the tapes and the risk is too high correct, and besides we just took and elevator ride."

Rogers:
press the door close butto and pray they miss us

Keeper:
Kelley says, "I dunno... We're looking at shooting our way out, most likely."

Cabot:
"Let me know when you get to the car! I'll hit a fire alarm. It'll bring all the elevators back to the Lobby and freeze them there until the FD gets here with elevator keys. That'll fuck things up for a while."

Rogers:
"Ok"

Keeper:
"And they're probably watching us on a camera here," he adds with a grimace.

Rogers:
"Fuck"

Cabot:
"Shoot the fucking camera!"

Rogers:
"We'l have to risk something then, Kelly take out the camera"

Keeper:
Kelley mutters a curse and draws his Sig. He looks up at a conspicuously perforated ceiling panel.

DICE for Keeper: (1d100) = [ 76 ]

Rogers:
"I'm going to go to the security centre and pose as a Doc and try to get the tapes when the fire alarm hits, Kelly come with me and set the package for 5 mins."

Keeper:
The gunshot deafens everyone in the elevator, and sparks fly.

Cabot:
Yooowww!

Rogers:
"Is that a good idea, what with the cables and everything above I meant smash it."

Cabot:
Are we down yet? This is an awful long elevator trip.

Keeper:
Kelley shrugs. The doors open to the garage.

Keeper:
Cabot, where are you and Keen headed on the stairs?

Rogers:
"Danforth you get him out of his box and to the Rover , don't wait for us just get to the Safe house." "We're off to save the day"

Cabot:
Down to the Rover.

Keeper:
Danforth pushes the gurney out and rolls it fast to the car. Kelley stays in the elevator. "We going to hit the fire button after getting off at the Admin secion?"

Rogers:
"Yes!"

Rogers:
"Kelly you ready? Hell there are worse places to be shot at than in a hospital at least we'll get to the ER quickly" ;-)

Rogers:
"No guns untill it's necessary."

Cabot:
"Is the package at the car?"

Keeper:
He says, "Listen, they know which floor each elevator's on. They know we were on this one. They'll be waiting if we take it back up to B-1."

Rogers:
"Ok lets get out and send it up to another floor."

Rogers:
"This is a really bad idea, what section is undernath the security section Kelly?"

Keeper:
"Fine. Am I bringing the package or sending it with Danforth and the body?"

Cabot:
"Remember, when I hit that alarm, all the cars are going to the Lobby and staying there awhile."

Rogers:
"If we put the bomb there it might destroy the tapes?"

Rogers:
"Cabot hold on that for a bit"

Keeper:
"Yeah, it'll blow the hell out of the tapes, if we get it there."

Keeper:
"Below Admin--looks like it's maintenance and machinery. Generators."

Cabot:
"You guys haven't been made as accomplices, as far as the tapes show. You were in the elevator when the whackos entered it with the patient. It's Connor and Keen and I that are hot items right now."

Cabot:
"Flash your badges and act appropriately."

Rogers:
"I though that lets just get out and leave"

Keeper:
"Yeah. Let's jog up to B2 and get some fuel. Let that torch the tapes that didn't get wiped in the blast. Cabot, you think we can keep our covers if you or Keen places the bomb?"

Rogers:
"Or rather lets head for security ID ourselves and see what they have."

Cabot:
"You want us to plant the bomb in the garage?"

Cabot:
"Stand by, we'll be there in a moment." Huff it to the garage level and turn the corner to see the guys face-to-face.

Keeper:
Kelley nods. "Okay... Keen and Cabot, get the fuck out of here. Rogers, deal with the guards and get me to the tape bank. Get the guards out of there and let me place the bomb. When it goes off, we make like the perps must have gotten close and done it."

Rogers:
"Kelly I need your opinion do we plant this bomb and kill a lot of peopl or do we just throw the friendlies to the wolves?"

Rogers:
"They are the ones who are exposed after all."

Keeper:
Kelley shakes his head. "Get them away from the blast as much as we can."

Keeper:
"This thing gets a lot more complicated if somebody actually dies."

Rogers:
"No I mean do we just walk away now and leave the evidence of Cabot and Danforth here we're not suspect at present."

Cabot:
"That's it then, plant the bomb and scream "bomb", then evacuate away from the area. We gotta go now."

Cabot:
I help Connor load the guy into the rover and look around for any cameras, which I intend to disable.

Keeper:
"Your call. I'd say we take out the tapes if we can. Memory's less reliable than video."

Rogers:
"Kelly, we are about to do a dispicable thing either way."

Cabot:
"Hell, yes. You think anyone here has any idea what the stuff in this guy's capable of?"

Rogers:
Rogers gets out a coin, "Heads we plant the bomb, tails the friendlies get fucked"

Keeper:
(This last exchange was off the phone, Cabot, right before you and Keen get to the garage--Kelley and Rogers are talking privately)

Rogers:
Rogers spins a coin - it's Heads.

Cabot:
Okay.

Rogers:
(you guys are sooo lucky I really did that)

Rogers:
"Ok Kelly lets do it then." (JTRogers whispered to Keeper): I've got to go like now

Cabot:
How much time has elapsed since I shot the fed?

Keeper:
Kelley looks at the coin. "Good. Let's get up there."

Keeper:
Not much real time... less than five minutes, in fact.

Cabot:
Any cameras?

Keeper:
Cabot comes off the stairs with Keen and they help Danforth get the agent into the car.

Keeper:
Oh..

Keeper:
There's a camera on the parking deck, yes.

Cabot:
Can I reach it?

Keeper:
Yes.

Cabot:
Destroy it. Look for an alternate vehicle.

Keeper:
OK... Rogers, are you and Kelley taking the stairs to get to B-2/B-1?

Rogers:
I've got to go now sorry but we will be.

Keeper:
OK... that's where we pause, then... Kelley and Rogers head for the stairs, Cabot and Keen come off of them.

Cabot:
Whew! BTW, did that fed I shot look dead or just jarred badly?

Keeper:
Jarred badly.

Keeper:
If you'd have rolled an impale, there might have been trouble...

Keeper:
The day of June 5 continues...
