Report #3270, Transcript Section #6
(Operation SANDMAN)
©1998 Shane Ivey
DATE: 1 June 1998 (debriefed 19 JUL 1998)
AGENTS: Mark (Brian Lundquist, DOJ), Michael (John Rogers, CIA)
FRIENDLIES: Joseph McCannon, NYPD; Connor Danforth, NSA
SUMMARY: Operation SANDMAN, debriefing transcript 6: surveilling the church; the death of Bertrand Leguerre; Detective Kluwer and Carl Williams.
CASE STATUS: Open
KEEPER:
Last time, we left off with the team's return from abducting Bertrand "Bato" Leguerre from Southside AME Church.
KEEPER:
Alcohol was drunk, and things were smoked, and people generally started to cool off.
KEEPER:
It's now very late--probably creeping up toward pre-dawn. Bato is tied up and taped down in a "blind" room in the house.
McCANNON:
The info on the site has already been confirmed?
KEEPER:
Most of it. Lundquist called in a quick BI of Bato and got the criminal and credit and income reports.
KEEPER:
The more personal information will take a day or two.
KEEPER:
Any questions?
McCANNON:
Nope.
LUNDQUIST:
Is he a Hatian national, or an American citizen>
KEEPER:
Haitian national.
LUNDQUIST:
Shouldn't he have been deported by now? Did his felony arrest result in conviction?
KEEPER:
He and his mother immigrated to the US in 1991. His mother returned to Haiti in 1994.
KEEPER:
No felony conviction. It was dealt down to a misdemeanor.
ROGERS:
Did he have any thing on him when we 'apprehended' him?
McCANNON:
What drug was involved.
KEEPER:
Marijuana.
McCANNON:
Answer to both questions?
KEEPER:
Cocaine was present in the incident, but Bato was not convicted for it.
KEEPER:
No marijuana on him tonight. He was carrying nothing when you grabbed him except a silver crucifix necklace.
McCANNON:
Was there any background information I could run up, seeing as how I'm on the drug squad and all that?
KEEPER:
You could get some reports called up from the files at the 116th precinct and at HQ's intelligence department, by the clerks on duty.
KEEPER:
But for more in-depth "dirt" you'd need to talk to the officers involved.
McCANNON:
If there is/was a significant break in-between the seesions (doubtful), I'd like to make a few calls to those I can somewhat trust.
KEEPER:
OK... is anyone talking to Bertrand immediately? Or is everyone going to wait til morning?
ROGERS:
I think we want to talk to him
LUNDQUIST:
What do you guys think? Should we let him stew overnighht?
ROGERS:
But want to soften him up via lack of sleep first
McCANNON:
"I'm along for the ride, remember?" After a moment, "I still don't even know why we bugged the church."
McCANNON:
Eyes the other agents intently.
ROGERS:
You can have a go being in the drugs squad, probably scare him more than we could.
ROGERS:
But lets weaken him first? Agreed?
KEEPER:
The other (nonplayer) investigators ignore McCannon's comment, too. ;-)
McCANNON:
"Guys, let's take it to the living room, huh?" Jerking his head to a spot away from the livign room.
McCANNON:
Sorry, away from Bertrand.
ROGERS:
He's in the secure room
KEEPER:
Bertrand is locked up tight in a soundproof/windowless room, I believe.
ROGERS:
Rounded walls ;-)
KEEPER:
Heh. Not quite THAT drastic.
ROGERS:
Can we find out who was the arresting officer for Bertrand, it wasn't your friend and mine Lemonde?
McCANNON:
Cool, then. "What the hell is going on!?!"
McCANNON:
"If you'll tell me what you're all doing here."
ROGERS:
"Investigating this new drug."
LUNDQUIST:
"We feel it represents a new and unusual threat, and we want to learn as much as we can about it as early as possible."
McCANNON:
"The Dreaming Man?'
LUNDQUIST:
"Yes."
McCANNON:
"Lying bastards!"
McCANNON:
"Next, you'll be telling me it's bio-warfare, and you're with the CDC!"
LUNDQUIST:
"This drug appears to be far more dangerous than anything we've encountered on the street before. We have to ascertain the extent of the menace."
LUNDQUIST:
"I understand you have some experience with this sort of thing already?"
ROGERS:
"It even has effects on non users" "Proximity is all it needs I've been affected"
McCANNON:
Fumes.
McCANNON:
"With what?"
LUNDQUIST:
"Things best not talked about."
McCANNON:
"Dogmen and street punks, sure. Killer dream-drugs?..."
LUNDQUIST:
"We don't know what it is. The potential for harm is immense, though, and until we nail down just how dangerous it is, we're going to assume the worst."
ROGERS:
"Would you believe dogmen if you had not seen?"
McCANNON:
"So who do you really work for?"
LUNDQUIST:
"I work for the Department of Justice, Mr McCannon."
ROGERS:
"I work fot the CIA Mr MaCannon"
McCANNON:
"What the hell do they care about a street drug? They'd usually just send me and mine in, or call the FBI."
LUNDQUIST:
"This is an unusual circumstance. It calls for unusual methods of investigation."
McCANNON:
Goes ashen all of a sudden. "This isn't a foreign problem..."
ROGERS:
"I've been included because I'm a doctor and am fairly new to New York so I'm not a know fed"
McCANNON:
"...is it?" Feeling queasy.
LUNDQUIST:
"We don't know what it is. Like I said, until we do, we're going to assume the worst."
McCANNON:
Sit down heavily.
McCANNON:
"Fucking Sadaam..."
LUNDQUIST:
"Becase of the nature and extent of this threat we may need to break a few of the rules along the way--like our treatment of Mr Leguerre. I assume we can count on your discretion in these matters?"
McCANNON:
"Discretion? Oh, yeah... sure..."
Rogers whispers:
Was Lemonde the arresting officer for Bertrand?
McCANNON:
Dazed.
McCANNON:
Blink. Blink.
Keeper whispers to Rogers
Lemonde was the arresting officer in the last arrest, last year's handgun arrest.
McCANNON:
Coming back. "Guys?"
ROGERS:
"Hey guys, Just looking over the report on Bertrand and guess who arrested him for the handgun possession?"
McCANNON:
Staring questioningly.
ROGERS:
"Lemonde"
LUNDQUIST:
"Huh."
McCannon whispers: to DG_Keeper:
I know him, right?
ROGERS:
"The cop we are going to see today"
McCannon whispers: to DG_Keeper:
Lemonde, that is.
ROGERS:
"I think"
KEEPER: Keeper whispers to McCannon:
Lemonde? No. He's the community policing liaison for the Harfleur area of the 116th precinct. You have heard the names of the narcotics detectives in the precinct, but not the patrol officers.
McCannon whispers: to DG_Keeper:
O.K. Cool.
McCANNON:
"Is that bad?"
ROGERS:
"Its a coincidence and how often do coincidences occur in investigations?"
LUNDQUIST:
"Yeah, good point..."
McCANNON:
Swallows hard.
KEEPER:
The other investigators turn in to get some rest.
KEEPER:
Umm... that would be Danforth, I suppose.
LUNDQUIST:
And Knight?
ROGERS:
"Before he goes anything on the mics / video yet?"
KEEPER:
Knight's not staying with you full-time--he's off at his own place.
KEEPER:
No. They've only been in place for 3 hours.
LUNDQUIST:
So nobody's been into the church in that time? No cops responding to the call?
ROGERS:
"Just thought I'd ask, I'll get the highlights later"
KEEPER:
Nobody went inside.
LUNDQUIST:
(Sounds like our mics might not be comprimised, guys...)
McCANNON:
"Morning..." Rolls over where he is (under the coffee table).
LUNDQUIST:
We should probably all get some sleep.
ROGERS:
"Not a bad idea, who get the nicest room?"
LUNDQUIST:
(Except for Leguerre, of course...) :-)
KEEPER:
Of course...
KEEPER:
What time in the morning are you going to rise?
McCANNON:
Me. (snoring under table).
ROGERS:
Nice and early, around 7:30
LUNDQUIST:
We'll rise early.
KEEPER:
Ouch... Everybody is red-eyed after sleeping for 3 hours.
McCannon whispers: to DG_Keeper:
Do I have anything going on in the department?
Rogers whispers:
I thought it was midnight?
McCANNON:
Not me. Not getting up 'til they wake me.
LUNDQUIST:
First thing I want to do is bring McCannon up to speed on everything we've found out about the Dreaming Man.
Rogers whispers:
well 12:30
LUNDQUIST:
I want to make sure he knows the seriousness of the threat here.
Rogers whispers:
?
KEEPER:
You hit the church around midnight, I think, rooted around inside for a while... yeah, you may have gotten back earlier than thta.
KEEPER:
That was in response to a whispered question about the time, btw.
LUNDQUIST:
Say we got four hours of sleep then. :-)
KEEPER:
Maybe 5-6 hours of sleep, not 3. Anyway. Lundquist is bringing McCannon up to speed on the drug.
KEEPER:
According to the closed-circuit TV camera hidden in the roof of Bertrand's room, he's been sitting there alternately shivering and looking around scared and dozing off from exhaustion for the past several hours.
McCANNON:
Throughout, ask basic questions, and stare dumbly/sleepily.
McCANNON:
After Lundquist is done, in monotone, "What do you want me to do?"
ROGERS:
"Good morning all who's coffe and who's tea?"
LUNDQUIST:
"That will depend on what we're able to learn. But if you have any ideas or suggestions, don't keep them to yourself."
McCANNON:
Mumbles, "Coffee... Lots..."
LUNDQUIST:
"I just want some orange juice."
ROGERS:
"I'll have tea" "Earl Grey Hot"
ROGERS:
;-)
McCANNON:
Goes to step into shower (only remembering to take off clothes at the last minute).
LUNDQUIST:
"Danforth, any word from our bugs yet?"
KEEPER:
Danforth yawns as he checks the tapes. "Yeah... Sounds like two people are in the office. Man and a woman. Hold on... voice prints for the man match Reverend Ezekiel."
ROGERS:
"Any thing of relevance to our nocturnal activities?"
LUNDQUIST:
"What are they saying?"
KEEPER:
He switches the speaker on and takes off his headphones.
KEEPER:
Ezekiel: "...know, I know. But we can't afford anything like that."
KEEPER:
Woman: "But Reverend! It's not safe! Even here, it's not safe."
McCANNON:
Step out into the room, with towel wrapped around head.
KEEPER:
Ezekiel: "The Lord wills what the Lord wills, Maddy. He will see us through according to His plan."
KEEPER:
Maddy: (sigh) "Amen. Still, what about Bato? If someone tried to break in..."
McCANNON:
"Oops."
KEEPER:
Ezekiel: "Bato probably got scared and hid somewhere else. He'll be back. He's found the Lord, Maddy. He'll be back."
KEEPER:
Maddy: "I know. But are you sure nobody broke in?"
KEEPER:
Ezekiel: "When Carl comes we'll have him look things over. He'll know if anyone's broken in, even if the police can't be bothered to get out of their cars."
KEEPER:
Maddy: (resigned) "All right, Reverend."
McCANNON:
"Anyone know who Carl is?"
ROGERS:
"No"
KEEPER:
Ezekiel: "Now. Let's get that correspondence..."
McCANNON:
"Damn. I guess our bugs won't be much good for too much longer then, huh?"
KEEPER:
Danforth turns the volume down again.
LUNDQUIST:
"I think we want go in right now, flash our badges around, and then bug out to let them talk about us. Before this Carl shows up."
McCANNON:
"Why?"
ROGERS:
"I think MaCannon could go there to try and do a bit of PR"
LUNDQUIST:
"That plan only works as long as they aren't aware of the bugs."
ROGERS:
"Maybe avert the need for Carl to show"
McCANNON:
"It sounded like he was coming in, anyway."
ROGERS:
"Fair point."
McCANNON:
"What about waiting for Carl to show, then going in.:
LUNDQUIST:
"Which is why I'd like to try to beat him there."
LUNDQUIST:
"Yeah, we could go in as he arrives maybe..."
ROGERS:
"If we go in are we an interagency task force or what?"
LUNDQUIST:
"That would slow down his checking out the place."
McCANNON:
"I'd like to get a look at this guy - so we can run them all up against the Fed's Criminal Database."
ROGERS:
"What about the visual surveilance did we get pictures of the woman?"
LUNDQUIST:
"If we go in we're unspecified investigators. We make some unsubstaniated allegations."
LUNDQUIST:
"If they're innocent, they'll act differently than if they're up to something."
ROGERS:
"Is it Ezekiel's wife?"
KEEPER:
Danforth did install a camera in the office. "Maddy" is not Ezekiel's wife.
KEEPER:
She's dressed professionally, about 21 years old.
McCANNON:
"Can we get hardcopies of those pictures?"
LUNDQUIST:
Do we have a list of church employees? Tax records or something?
LUNDQUIST:
(For payroll)
KEEPER:
Danforth runs off color prints of video stills.
KEEPER:
You can get a list of church employees, sure.
LUNDQUIST:
Let's do so, and look for this "Maddy" there.
LUNDQUIST:
Also Carl.
KEEPER:
OK, Lundquist places a call to make the request. It will take a few hours to get the report.
LUNDQUIST:
Good enough.
ROGERS:
"Anything from the other camera's?" "Activity etc"
LUNDQUIST:
Do we want to head into Harlem now?
LUNDQUIST:
"Danforth can keep an eye on Bato here, and Knight can back him up."
KEEPER:
Ezekiel arrived at 7:00 and went down to the basement looking for Bato. When he saw he was not there he went back upstairs, looking preoccupied.
KEEPER:
Maddy showed up about when you started listening to their conversation, above.
ROGERS:
"Please tell me the camera and mics didn't have property of US Government on them"
KEEPER:
Heh heh.
Rogers whispers:
;-)
LUNDQUIST:
"No, they said 'Property of JTRogers' instead."
ROGERS:
"OK should be an interesting if short life"
McCANNON:
Slaps palm against forehead.
KEEPER:
"This equipment is on interagency loan from the National Security Agency. Please call 1-800-BIG-BRO if you find it." ;-)
ROGERS:
LOL
McCANNON:
Shakes face in palm.
KEEPER:
OK, it's around 8:00 or so. Bato is still stewing in his windowless room.
LUNDQUIST:
"Okay, so, do we want to head into town to confront the Reverend? Or do we want to question Bato?"
ROGERS:
"Lets give Bato a quick session"
ROGERS:
"about findning the lord"
LUNDQUIST:
"Okay, but let's keep it quick. Sooner we get into town the better."
ROGERS:
"Yeah quick couple of questions to disoriente himn with how much we know"
ROGERS:
"If we seem to know everything he may just give it all up " "Unlikely though"
McCANNON:
"Or how much we don't..."
LUNDQUIST:
"Rogers, do you want to handle Bato for now?"
LUNDQUIST:
"Go have a little chat with him?"
ROGERS:
"Ok any one have any questions they are dying to ask him?"
McCANNON:
"Hey. I just had a thought. Can we give him a tox-screen?"
ROGERS:
"Good idea, I don't want that experience again."
LUNDQUIST:
"Try to get him to talk about his 'lord'. Find out if it matches Christian beliefs, vodoo, or none of the above."
McCANNON:
"Drop Carl's name, too/"
KEEPER:
Rogers, you probably have the equipment on hand to take a blood or urine sample. You could probably do a quick and dirty analysis, but for details you'd have to courier it to a lab.
LUNDQUIST:
"Yeah, we should do the tox-screen first."
LUNDQUIST:
"Do what you can here and then we'll send a sample off."
KEEPER:
Blood, or urine?
ROGERS:
"Right I'll do a quick blood test before questioning him that should unnerve him"
KEEPER:
You going in alone with the needle?
ROGERS:
"Then hit him with the questions act like the test had something to do with the questions"
ROGERS:
"He's tied up isn't he?"
LUNDQUIST:
No, I'll back him up.
ROGERS:
"Thanks"
KEEPER:
He's tied up tightly, yes.
McCANNON:
"Make it all seem very organized. Professional."
LUNDQUIST:
Benign.
ROGERS:
"Right"
ROGERS:
"impersonal"
KEEPER:
You open the door and step in. He looks up blearily. His throat sounds dry. "Who... who are you?"
ROGERS:
"I'm a Doctor"
ROGERS:
"I'm here to do a few tests on you"
KEEPER:
"Doctor...? What... what tests?"
ROGERS:
"I'll need some samples to begin with."
ROGERS:
"We'll talk more about what they are for later."
ROGERS: Rogers takes samples
KEEPER:
He shakes his head. "No... No, I'm clean... been clean a month... Ahhh..." He winces as you stick him and draw the blood.
ROGERS:
"What drug were you taking?"
KEEPER:
"Wh--? I did a lot... but I don't do it anymore."
ROGERS:
"What was the drug?!"
KEEPER:
He winces again and cringes slightly. "Bunch of 'em... I smoked weed and rock... did a lot of DM... but I'm clean now..."
KEEPER:
He begins to sweat noticeably.
ROGERS:
"I'll be back shortly."
KEEPER:
He says nothing as you step out.
ROGERS:
"Ok Lundquiest how about this, to cover his abscence we hook him back onto DM then go and see Ezekiel and say we found him babelling about the church and the Lord?"
LUNDQUIST:
"It's a good idea."
ROGERS:
"do we have any of the drug here"
ROGERS:
"and what's a heroic dose?"
KEEPER:
Yeah, Knight bought a bunch of the stuff and dropped it off.
ROGERS:
"Excellent" smile evilly
LUNDQUIST:
"We don't want to overdose him... Use your medical opinion."
LUNDQUIST:
"And check his blood anyway, to make sure he's telling the truth about being clean."
ROGERS:
"Lets do the other questions now ask him what we want, then drug him into the stratosphere!"
ROGERS:
"Within medical limits of course"
KEEPER:
You run part of the blood sample through an assortment of chemicals and detect no toxins; not even alcohol.
LUNDQUIST:
"Ask him about his Lord, and about this Carl."
ROGERS:
"Do you want to do that?"
ROGERS:
"Handle those questions I mean."
LUNDQUIST:
"No, he should talk only to you for now. Keep him more off-balance."
LUNDQUIST:
"And remember the DM
LUNDQUIST:
has side effects!"
LUNDQUIST:
"Be very careful!"
McCANNON:
"Doesn't this stuff affect those around the user also?"
ROGERS:
"Once he's injected I'm stying well clear of that room" "probably best to sedate him as well"
KEEPER:
(McCannon, the narcotics detective, must be loving the 'Drug him into the stratosphere' talk!)
LUNDQUIST:
"Just make sure you don't give him a screwed-up combination that kills him or anything."
ROGERS:
"OK, hopefully we can use him in his drugged state to explain his abscence and the strange stuff outside the church." "Best if MaCannon goes over to the reverand and explains what we found"
McCANNON:
"O.K. Here's a plan. We can stake out the church, and when Carl shows up, listen for a while. When it looks like he'll find the cams, I can bust in and tell them that we're conducting a drug search, as Bertrand has been found, doped up on DM."
LUNDQUIST:
"Yeah, except we'll ask politely to be allowed to search, as we won't have a warrant. Then, when they refuse, we'll begin making allegations that they're hiding something."
ROGERS:
"We'd probably loose one cam / mic and that would make the others useless, get there first and arrest Carl for supplying DM"
LUNDQUIST:
"And I'll tag along with you when we go to the church."
McCANNON:
"My point was that we could recover the cams before they're found by Carl."
McCANNON:
"And can't you guys get a warrant?"
LUNDQUIST:
"Probably, but I still want to hear their reactions to our unsubstantiated allegations."
McCANNON:
"No reason we can't do both."
Rogers whispers:
While were having this discussion I'm doing the blood tests.
McCANNON:
"We better hustle, though. Carl could show anytime..."
LUNDQUIST:
"If we remove our bugs we won't be able to hear them."
LUNDQUIST:
"Yeah, let's move right now."
Keeper whispers to Rogers
Right. See my comment above regarding it.
LUNDQUIST:
"We might not beat Carl there, but let's not waste any more time."
Rogers whispers:
Whoops :-p
McCANNON:
"If we don't remove them, they'll knwo who you work for."
LUNDQUIST:
"Danforth should be able to monitor the bugs and let us know if they're found."
LUNDQUIST:
"Only if they find them."
LUNDQUIST:
"I'm hoping to keep them off balance enough to keep them from looking too hard."
LUNDQUIST:
"At least for a while."
ROGERS:
"Ok I'll question Bato fast and hard"
LUNDQUIST:
"Get on it. And get him doped up.
ROGERS:
"Lets go to it Mr L."
McCANNON:
"I'll stay out here. We may need a new face in there after a while."
LUNDQUIST:
"I'll call Knight and get him over here to help Danforth with the babysitting."
LUNDQUIST:
(Dials Knight).
KEEPER:
The drug that Knight bought was in a solid form, blue-black flakes. Rogers, are you cooking some up into a serum?
ROGERS:
"What is the usuall method of administration?"
KEEPER:
Intrevenous or inhaled.
KEEPER:
I.e., smoked.
McCANNON:
Watches closely.
KEEPER:
Forcing him to smoke it might involve some... logistical challenges...
ROGERS:
"I'm assuiming intrevenous is stronger / more efficient"
ROGERS:
"Nah just mask him up and mix with oxygen"
KEEPER:
(That is mentioned on the briefing report, actually.)
KEEPER:
So... What's it going to be?
ROGERS:
"I'd say intrevenous shot to start him off with then mix oxy and DM to get the levels up"
McCANNON:
"You should go IV."
ROGERS:
"Ok How heavy is the patient so that I can guestimate the right level to give him"
LUNDQUIST:
"We don't want to get him too high... Just enough so that he can't talk rationally about his whereabouts for the last 18 hours."
KEEPER:
Rogers cooks up some of the flakes in water to extract an ugly brackish liquid.
ROGERS:
Being very careful with sharps of course
KEEPER:
Of course.
KEEPER:
You estimate to your best knowledge the dosage to prepare.
KEEPER:
And a short while later you have a syringe full of the Dreaming Man drug, ready for administration.
ROGERS:
"Right, we'l go and question him when I ask Mr. L can pass me the syringe and we can use it as a threat"
ROGERS:
"He won't know were going to do it anyway"
KEEPER:
Are the two of you going back into the room? And where is the syringe?
ROGERS:
Lundquiest has the syringe he can look sinister and pass it to me when I ask.
McCANNON:
"I'll make the calls for the warrant, if you like."
KEEPER:
OK... JTR and Lundquist step into Bato's room again.
ROGERS:
"I have a few questions for you."
KEEPER:
Bato looks up again, distressed. "What? I've done nothing!"
ROGERS:
"after my examination of your blood sample, I see you have used the Dreaming Man Drug."
ROGERS:
"This is of interest to myself and my associates."
KEEPER:
He shakes his head incredulously. "No! No, I'm clean. Been clean a month!"
KEEPER:
He looks from you to Lundquist. Then he goes very quiet and very afraid as he sees what Lundquist is carrying.
ROGERS:
"I want to know how you got clean, and if you had help?"
ROGERS:
"You can be kept here a very long time if need be."
KEEPER:
He blinks and stares at Lundquist--or rather, at the syringe.
Rogers whispers:
I'm going to ask L quietlty to take the syringe outside
Rogers whispers:
then come back without it
KEEPER:
He does so. Bato watches him the whole time. When he looks at you again his gaze is different. He looks far more afraid than before. Before he was scared; this is more like stark terror.
ROGERS:
"How did you come off the drug Bertrand?"
KEEPER:
He whispers,
KEEPER:
He whispers, "I didn't say nothing... didn't say nothing..."
Rogers whispers:
has he gone yet?
Rogers whispers:
Is this room wired?
Keeper whispers to Rogers
Lundquist returns without the syringe. The room is wired.
ROGERS:
"Bertrand, how did you come of the drug you've just seen?"
ROGERS: Rogers shouts"Did you have help?"
Rogers whispers:
I'm assuming your typing the answer to the scenario so I'll wait a while for my next question.
KEEPER:
"I... " He cringes at the shout.
KEEPER:
"The Reverend help me! You know this already! He helped me find Jesus!"
KEEPER:
He writhes uncomfortably in his bindings.
ROGERS:
"How did the Lord help you Bertrand?"
KEEPER:
"He give me strength... he help me fight it off."
ROGERS:
"How did he give you strength Bertrand? Did he send anyone to offer comfort in your time of need?"
ROGERS:
"The Lord acts through individuals after all."
KEEPER:
"They... The Reverend helped me... they all helped me!" His eyes tear up.
ROGERS:
"Who else helped you Bertrand? They were all agents of the Lord?
ROGERS:
"Give me the names Bertrand or my colleage will come back in."
KEEPER:
"At the Church! They brought me in. They helped me stay clean!"
KEEPER:
"Maddy and Carl... and Franklin... and Mrs. Ezekiel..."
ROGERS: Rogers "I want names Bertreand. Now!. "Or do I have to call my colleage in again?
KEEPER:
He cries, "That's all! That's all! Just at the church, they helped me!"
ROGERS:
"You can do better than that full names." "Or I let my colleage in and you will wish you had told me everything Bertrand."
KEEPER:
"Please... you know who they are... you can find them there, it's no secret!"
ROGERS: Rogers shouts "Right I've had it with you you piece of shit, talk now"
ROGERS: Rogers goes to the door and waits
KEEPER:
He winces and cringes again. "I tol' you all! What do you want from me? It's Frank Garoux! Maddy Smith, Carl Williams! They helped me!"
ROGERS:
"what's no secret Bertrand? What are you hiding from us?"
KEEPER:
"Nothing! I didn't say nothing, I didn't say nothing!" He sobs.
ROGERS: Rogers shouts "Last chance."
ROGERS: Rogers shouts "You didn't say nothing about WHAT! Bertrand?"
KEEPER:
"I-- I jus' told dem the white man was there... I didn't tell about the other!"
ROGERS: Rogers opens the door and call for the syringe
KEEPER:
Lundquist steps in ominously. Bertrand yells incoherently. "No! No, I didn't, I didn't!"
ROGERS: Rogers takes the syringe
ROGERS:
"What white man Bertrand? Talk or you get this."
KEEPER:
Bertrand's eyes get wide. "I didn't!" He yells, "I didn't tell them about the dark! I didn't tell them about the other man!"
ROGERS: Rogers moves towards Bertrand and pulls up his sleeve
KEEPER:
He smells funny, JTR.
ROGERS:
"You better tell me about the dark, and the other man"
ROGERS:
"I'm assuming that he's relieved himself?"
KEEPER:
Bertrand is covered in a sheen of sweat... but it's more slimy than that. More like sea water.
KEEPER:
Dirty sea water.
KEEPER:
It does not smell like urine, no.
ROGERS: Rogers hands Lundquest the syringe and tells him to wait
ROGERS:
Get some gloves on and do a quick exam
KEEPER:
Bato stares at you in terror. "I--" his voice is hoarse. "I--"
KEEPER:
In the flourescent light you notice steam seems to be rising from him.
ROGERS: Rogers get the hell out of dodge taking Lundquest with me
ROGERS:
"Lets watch on the monitors"
ROGERS:
"Anything he says will be recorded"
McCANNON:
I'm already there. Have been watching everything and speaking to myself.
KEEPER:
"I-- I..." Bato coughs out the words. It sounds like he is gagging. "I... the... dark..."
McCANNON:
"You O.K., Rogers? Lundquist?"
McCANNON:
"This is bad."
McCANNON:
"Really bad."
ROGERS:
"I think so none of the effects of my previous exposure"
ROGERS:
"Is anything happening to the drug in the syringe?"
KEEPER:
Bato's eyes roll back to show the whites. He shakes uncontrollably. The steam rises more distinctly from his salt-sheened body. Then it rises from his open mouth.
ROGERS:
do we have speakers in the room?
KEEPER:
The drug in the syringe is unaffected.
KEEPER:
Through the speakers you hear him gurgling and gasping. Then you hear a strange crackling sound. Smoke--not steam--rises from Bato's mouth.
ROGERS: Rogers turns on the speakers
ROGERS: Rogers via the spaekers "What is the dark Bertrand?"
KEEPER:
The crackling is more pronounced; then his shirt scorches, from the inside, and bursts into flame.
ROGERS:
"You must tell me I am an agent of the Lord"
KEEPER:
Bato only gurgles. The flame spreads from his midsection outward, consuming his chest and scorching his throat.
KEEPER:
He slowly slumps into his seat.
ROGERS:
err sprinklers anyone?
KEEPER:
Oh, and the san rolls...
McCANNON:
Winces.
ROGERS:
Oh dear?
McCANNON:
Exhales slowly. Turning to Rogers, "What now?"
ROGERS:
"I'd better check out the body maybe we can explain it as a suicide on the underground cover the scorching anyway"
Keeper whispers to Rogers
Lose 4 SAN.
ROGERS:
"We need to get Carl Williams stopped asap though"
KEEPER: Keeper whispers to McCannon:
Lose 2 SAN.
McCANNON:
"No! Don't go in there. Could be poisonous."
McCANNON:
"I'll call and have Williams detained."
ROGERS:
"I'll wait a while"
McCANNON:
Keeper, is the DM drug known to the department?
ROGERS:
"Is that room hermetically sealed if its not we could be exposed via the Air Conditioning pretty soon?"
KEEPER:
DM is known to the NYPD, but it is very low on the priorities. Its use is not widespread outside this community.
KEEPER:
The room is sealed, yes.
ROGERS:
"Well that's good to know" "Any space suits available?"
McCANNON:
Fine. I want to place an anonymous call to the best source (probably a drug enforcement detective, like me), fingering Williams as a suspect in a drug exchange.
McCANNON:
Make it look like a coke thing, maybe?
KEEPER:
No space suits unless you ask Osborne to call NASA or the CDC.
ROGERS:
"And saying he's likely to be at the church soon."
KEEPER:
Are you calling a detective you know already, McCannon?
McCANNON:
I don't have a description, so we'll have to settle on the name. Leave it to them to figure out where I got it.
Rogers whispers:
I meant the chem suits used by CDC or whoever blue or pink I think
McCANNON:
No.
KEEPER:
Calling the 116th precinct, or another?
McCANNON:
Mention the area of the church (within a couple blocks) as the sighting zone.
KEEPER:
Or just 911?
McCANNON:
Whichever is closest to the church.
ROGERS:
Use Bertrand's name as the snitch
KEEPER:
That's the 116th, then. You get the narcotics desk and pass along your tip.
ROGERS:
When hes found dead then it will seem as if he were out of it on DM
KEEPER:
(Except there's no DM in his system.)
ROGERS:
I'll get it in there later.
McCANNON:
We should plant him in a condemned building, then set it on fire.
Rogers whispers:
or get the autopsy files altered.
Rogers whispers:
;-)
ROGERS:
no just suspend him from some power lines
McCANNON:
"What!?"
ROGERS:
Would account for the burns.
ROGERS:
and allow an autopsy if the body is destroyed could raise suspicions in the church.
KEEPER:
(Note: spontaneous combustion has not been reported in prior Dreaming Man incidents.)
McCANNON:
Looking uncomfortably into Bertrand's death chamber, "Think we should hit the church?"
ROGERS:
"We need to get some background checks running, Lundquest how about checking up on; Maddy Smith, Carl Williams and Frank Garoux."
KEEPER:
Lundquist goes to make the call.
ROGERS:
"While Me and McCannon 'hit the church'"
KEEPER:
Are you driving to the church now?
ROGERS:
not just yet 1 sec
McCANNON:
"I'll drive."
ROGERS:
the spontaneous combustion didn't Anton Royce get hotter as I talked to him?
KEEPER:
No.
KEEPER:
He sweated a lot, but it was not the same. Nor did he exhibit the "sea salt" smell.
ROGERS:
Right. We sedated him before too much could happen though?
KEEPER:
If I recall the scene correctly, that's a matter of opinion. ;-)
ROGERS:
hypothetically then we could have stopped the comustion by slowing his system down.
Rogers whispers:
That should make for another san check for the Doc if its right
KEEPER:
That's hard to say. There have been other cases of DM overdose which were never checked by sedatives; none resulted in combustion.
ROGERS:
Fair point.
ROGERS:
So get us to the church on time to stop Carl!
KEEPER:
Vrooom!
ROGERS:
and explain last night a Bertrand spaced out on DM.
McCANNON:
Will park the car close to the church, but at least a block away.
KEEPER:
You drive northward from the Brooklyn suburbs to Queens and to the depressed neighborhoods north of JFK. It's Tuesday, mid-morning. Traffic is moderate. You reach the church at 10:30 am.
McCANNON:
In the best place for surveillance (like a corner), where we can watch the church while watching for Carl.
McCANNON:
Did we bring a listening device for the bugs inside. I wanted to.
KEEPER:
The main gate to the church grounds is closed, but not locked. There is one car in the church parking lot.
KEEPER:
Sure, you brought listening gear and earphones.
McCANNON:
What kind. I take down the plate.
KEEPER:
The car is a tan 1988 Buick, looks like it is in good condition. You jot the license number.
KEEPER:
McCannon, you find a perfect spot for surveillance, btw.
KEEPER:
Inside, the Reverend and Maddy are going about mundane business. She seems to be his secretary.
McCANNON:
Thanks. We're both keeping inside the car with munchies and a newspaper. Watching for Carl or any activity at the church.
KEEPER:
About thirty minutes pass.
McCANNON:
Do we have the surveillance equipment with us?
ROGERS:
"How do you want to do this?"
KEEPER:
Binoculars and such, maybe some goggles if you expect night to fall, sure.
ROGERS:
"Cop and Doctor?"
KEEPER:
Rogers, you see someone walk into the church grounds.
McCANNON:
"We wait."
McCANNON:
I meant something portable for the bugs we placed yesterday.
KEEPER:
He's a stocky man, black, neatly dressed. He walks up the alley behind the church and swings the gate open, steps through, and closes it behind him.
ROGERS:
Does he match Carls description?
KEEPER:
Neat casual attire--not a suit.
McCANNON:
Can we get to him before he hits the church?
KEEPER:
You got ID on the names Bato mentioned: yes, it looks like Carl Williams.
ROGERS:
lets get him now before he gets to the church
McCANNON:
Can we?
KEEPER:
McCannon, you notice a man in a car a few blocks away take an interest in Carl.
ROGERS:
just call to him ask him to stop
KEEPER:
Not a few blocks--that's too far--a block away.
McCANNON:
Put my hand on Rogers' chest and point to the other car.
ROGERS:
What do I see?
KEEPER: Keeper whispers to McCannon:
You recognize him as Kluwer--you don't recall his first name--a narcotics detective from the 116.
KEEPER:
Rogers, you see a curly-headed man, about 40 years old, staring at Carl Williams.
McCANNON:
"That's one of mine, Rogers."
McCANNON:
"Let's let him have a go at Carl, first."
ROGERS:
"Ok"
McCANNON:
Reads the funnies.
KEEPER:
Carl enters the church building. Before hte door closes behind him, the detective pulls away from the curb. He drives a block to the alley and parks.
KEEPER:
He steps out of the car and walks up to the back door of the church. He's tall, average build.
McCANNON:
LOL.
KEEPER:
He pushes the door open and steps in slowly.
McCANNON:
"Sorry. Garfield was incognito, trying to get some.
McCANNON:
Eyeing the church peripherally, over Baby Blues.
KEEPER:
Over the earphones you hear voices from the receptionist's office.
McCANNON:
What are they saying?
KEEPER:
A man's voice: "'Scuse me. I'm John Kluwer, NYPD. Can I talk to the Reverend?"
ROGERS:
What are we seeing?
ROGERS:
on the surveilance that is?
KEEPER:
Maddy: (Surprised) "Sir? What's this about?"
KEEPER:
You see Kluwer lean into the doorway, looking friendly and casual. Maddy looks nervous.
McCannon whispers: to DG_Keeper:
Isn't it normal for narcotics detectives to work in pairs?
KEEPER:
Kluwer: "Well, I need to ask the Reverend a question, if I could. Could you let him know? Thanks." (he smiles)
KEEPER: Keeper whispers to McCannon:
Yes.
KEEPER:
Maddy: (looks nervous and dubious) "One moment."
KEEPER:
She stands and steps into Ezekiel's office.
KEEPER:
Maddy: "Reverend, there's a Detective Kluwer here."
KEEPER:
Ezekiel: (silent for a moment; his expression is neutral, thoughtful) "Send him in, Maddy."
McCannon whispers: to DG_Keeper:
Have I ever heard of Kluwer before?
KEEPER:
She steps out. Ezekiel sits a bit straighter and clears his throat softly.
KEEPER:
You've heard of him. He's been around a while. The 116 was one of several precincts which was seriously purged in City-wide corruption hearings a few years ago. Kluwer survived the purges. That's all you know.
KEEPER:
Well, shit. Consider that whisper.
KEEPER:
Kluwer steps into Ezekiel's office. He looks genial.
KEEPER:
Kluwer: "Morning, Reverend. Have you seen Carl Williams today?"
KEEPER:
Ezekiel: "Can I ask what this is about, officer?"
KEEPER:
Kluwer: "That's Sergeant, actually."
KEEPER:
Ezekiel nods.
KEEPER:
Kluwer: "Well, I just need to ask Carl a couple of questions. There was some trouble last night, and I heard that he might be able to do his duty as a citizen and help us out."
KEEPER:
Ezekiel: "Trouble? Do you mean the attempted burglary of this church? Carl was not here."
KEEPER:
Kluwer: (smiling) "No, Reverend, not that. It's completely unrelated."
KEEPER:
Ezekiel: (stiff) "I'm disappointed. I had thought that burglary was still a crime in this city. Or is it only a crime in Brooklyn Heights?"
KEEPER:
Kluwer: (smiling, but impatient) "Now now, Reverend. I just need to ask Carl a couple of questions. Will you take me to him?"
KEEPER:
Ezekiel: (silent for a second) "I haven't seen Mr. Williams yet this morning, but he is no doubt hard at work. Come with me."
KEEPER:
Ezekiel stands. He waits for Kluwer to stand--still smiling--then he leads him out of the office.
KEEPER:
They walk out of view. You see Maddy look after them nervously for a minute.
KEEPER:
Then she starts shuffling papers and doing secretarial duties. The other cameras are blank.
McCANNON:
"Waiiiit."
McCANNON:
Bounces knee against the dashboard.
McCANNON:
"Where did they go?"
KEEPER:
The cameras remain blank.
McCANNON:
"I thought we had the whole place wired."
McCANNON:
Check the cameras again.
KEEPER:
You're right, Danforth wired the restrooms, conference rooms, etc.
McCANNON:
So what do we hear?
KEEPER:
You hear Ezekiel and Kluwer walk around the building, room to room, then they go downstairs. They don't go into the rec room that you were in last night.
KEEPER:
Williams is rustling around in a utility closet at the end of the hall.
McCANNON:
Did they pass him, or have they not reached him yet?
KEEPER:
Ezekiel: "Carl? Carl, this police officer wants to talk to you for a moment."
McCANNON:
"YES!"
KEEPER:
Williams: "Sir?" (sound of tools being placed on a desk)
KEEPER:
Kluwer: "Carl Williams? I'm Detective Kluwer. I need to talk to you for a few minutes. Would you mind coming to the station house with me?"
KEEPER:
Ezekiel: "Excuse me? Now, wait a minute..."
KEEPER:
Kluwer: "Just a simple question, Reverend."
Rogers whispers:
Can I get the reverands home phone number from lundquest?
McCANNON:
"Take that, bitch!"
KEEPER:
Williams: "What do you want to know?"
KEEPER:
Kluwer: "Well, it's a little complicated, Carl. But if you come to the precinct we can get it sorted out right away."
KEEPER:
Ezekiel: "Absolutely not. Carl, you stay here, do you hear me?"
Keeper whispers to Rogers
Sure.
Rogers whispers:
thanks
KEEPER:
Kluwer: (hard) "That's enough, Reverend. Carl can make up his own mind. Right, Carl? You know when to go along and not make waves, right?"
KEEPER:
Ezekiel: "That IS enough, de-TEC-tive. You don't come into my church and..."
KEEPER:
Williams: "Sir? But I don't understand..."
KEEPER:
Kluwer: (loud) "Can it, preacher! Now come on, Carl. I don't have all day."
KEEPER:
Williams: "No sir! You want to talk, we can talk here."
KEEPER:
(silence)
McCANNON:
sits, stunned.
KEEPER:
Kluwer: (quieter) "I wish you'd make my life easier, Carl. All right, then. You can play it that way."
KEEPER:
Ezekiel: "Yes, he can. Now I suggest you leave."
KEEPER:
Kluwer: "Well, Reverend, I can't do that. I have this search warrant that I need to execute." (rustling of paper)
KEEPER:
Ezekiel: "You WHAT? This is a house of--"
KEEPER:
Kluwer: (rustling of paper) "Read it for yourself, Reverend. Now, is this where Carl does most of his work? Looks that way to me. Excuse me."
KEEPER:
(sound of jostling, angry muttering)
KEEPER:
Kluwer: "Well, I'll be damned. Pardon my French, Reverend. But why on Earth would good Carl here keep a stash of drugs in his tool box?"
McCANNON:
I pick up Rogers' cell phone and dial the number of the Reverend's home.
McCANNON:
Stops, suddenly fixed on the receiver.
KEEPER:
A machine picks up: "You've called the residence of Reverend and Mrs. Ezekiel. Please leave a message."
KEEPER:
(silence from the bugs)
McCANNON:
Hangs up.
ROGERS:
"Shall we dance Mr McCannon?"
McCANNON:
Silence in the car, also.
KEEPER:
Kluwer: "Yes, sir. Carl, that's a lot of trouble, you know. This looks like cocaine. I believe they call it crack cocaine. And this is... well, this is that new stuff, isn't it, Carl? Carl?"
McCANNON:
It's daylight, right?
KEEPER:
(sound of sudden scuffling and hard footsteps on linoleum, receding down the hall, passing bugged rooms one at a time)
KEEPER:
About 11:15 am.
KEEPER:
Kluwer: "CARL!" (sound of another set of steps running) "STOP RIGHT NOW!"
KEEPER:
Ezekiel: "THIS IS A JAM! I'LL HAVE YOUR BADGE!"
KEEPER:
(bugs record the sound of footsteps running by... up stairs...)
McCANNON:
Gets out of the car. "Let's go, Rogers."
McCANNON:
Starts briskly walking up to the front door of the church.
ROGERS:
"Right"
KEEPER:
You trot toward the front door.
McCANNON:
Knock on the door as I reach it.
KEEPER:
You're not quite there when you hear the back door slam open, then shut, from the other side of the building.
ROGERS:
I'm running round to that side now
KEEPER:
You hear Kluwer's voice: "PUT IT DOWN, CARL!"
McCANNON:
Divert my stride so that I'm jogging around the side of church.
McCANNON:
Pull my gun and duck against the wall.
McCANNON:
Still moving toward the back.
KEEPER:
You hear a faint yell, then BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
ROGERS:
if I can when I get there I'll try and get him into a Lock (Jiu Jitsu)
KEEPER:
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
McCANNON:
Open run, burst out into the back and hold my pistol out at anyone there.
McCANNON:
"Everyone freeze! NYPD!!"
McCANNON:
What do we see
KEEPER:
You charge around the corner and see Kluwer standing with his Glock smoking and trained on Williams. Williams is lying in a bloody heap on the ground. A screwdriver is on the asphalt a few feet from him.
McCANNON:
Breathless anticipation...
ROGERS: Rogers give first aid
McCANNON:
Has Kluwer seen us yet?
KEEPER:
Kluwer turns. "DROP THAT FUCKING WEAPON!"
McCANNON:
Walk up to Kluwer and flash badge.
KEEPER:
Kluwer lowers his gun slowly. "What the hell are you doing here?"
KEEPER:
Williams moans feebly.
McCANNON:
"I'm Lt. Det. McCannon. I was in the area when the call went out to check on this place."
McCANNON:
"What do we have inside.
Rogers whispers:
Am I helping him yet?
McCANNON:
Looking at the church. Watching for aggressors or fleeing suspects.
KEEPER:
"Inside? Nothing. Just this dealer. Hey!" He yells at Rogers. "I haven't seen a badge from you, yet!"
KEEPER:
Ezekiel and Maddy come running to the back door. They look out, horrified.
McCANNON:
"He's a friend of mine. Not on the force."
McCANNON:
"Like I said, we were in the area, and I drove by just as the shit was going down.
KEEPER:
Kluwer says, "This is a crime scene, god damn it. Make sure he doesn't screw it up."
ROGERS:
"MaCannon explain this I'm trying to save this man's life!"
McCANNON:
"I've had my suspicions about this place for a while."
KEEPER:
Kluwer shakes his head. "Stupid bastard... God, we're going to have riots all week for this."
McCANNON:
"Gene? You done there, yet?"
McCANNON:
"Will he live?"
Rogers whispers:
Will he?
ROGERS:
"Call an ambulance fast"
Keeper whispers to Rogers
Rogers, Williams has been shot three times, once in the side, once in the chest, once in the leg. If he gets treatment soon--esp. the chest wound--he should pull through.
McCANNON:
Look harshly at Maddy. "You heard the man..."
KEEPER:
Maddy runs back inside.
Rogers whispers:
does he have any medical alert tags or anything? Blood group etc
Rogers whispers:
I'm treating him arn't I?
KEEPER:
Ezekiel looks on in disbelief. "What has happened here?" His breath is soft but full of outrage. "How DARE you people?"
Keeper whispers to Rogers
You can apply pressure to the worst wound, but you can't do much more without bandage and salves and stuff.
Rogers whispers:
Do I have my Dr's bag in the car?
McCANNON:
"Now just calm down, Mr. Ezekiel. We have a crime scene here, and we need calm."
Keeper whispers to Rogers
No useful tags or anything. You would have first aid gear in the car, yes.
McCANNON:
Pulling Kluwer away from Ezekiel, "So what happened?"
KEEPER:
Ezekiel: "Calm? CALM? You have shot an innocent man in cold blood on CHURCH GROUNDS!"
ROGERS:
"Reverand get over here! Put pressure here here and here, I'm going to get my bag from the car! Don't release the pressure"
KEEPER:
Ezekiel brushes past the two detectives and kneels to help Williams.
ROGERS: Rogers runs to the car to get his bag
KEEPER:
"This will NOT go unchallenged," says Ezekiel. "You have gone TOO far."
McCANNON:
Let him. Waiting for an answer from Kluwer.
KEEPER:
Kluwer looks at McCannon knowingly. "Paperwork for a month, right? Shit, what a mess."
KEEPER:
Kluwer holsters his pistol. You hear sirens.
KEEPER:
Rogers gets to the car.
McCANNON:
"What were the grounds?"
KEEPER:
Kluwer nods to the screwdriver on the ground. "He turned on me with that thing. Thought he was gonna run me through."
Rogers whispers:
I'm driving the car back fast.
KEEPER:
Rogers drives the car over, fast, and pulls up near Williams. The sirens are closer.
McCANNON:
"Find anything on him?"
ROGERS: Rogers gets out and starts to work fast
KEEPER:
"On him? What did it look like? I haven't even searched him yet."
Rogers whispers:
remembering to lock the door and having concealed the toys on the way over
KEEPER:
Kluwer explains, "I went in to talk to him out of a tip that he had been peddling out of here. I tried to give him a chance to come talk, but he ran."
KEEPER:
"After I found his stash."
McCANNON:
"No. I mean - was there evidence against him found on the grounds?"
McCANNON:
"Oh."
McCANNON:
"Where's that?"
Rogers whispers:
Is the ambulance here yet?
KEEPER:
"Inside. Downstairs. Need to get the uniforms around this place so I can comb it over, see if there's anything else. What a mess. The natives are definitely not going to like it."
McCANNON:
"I'll take care of things here. Why don't you collect the evidence we do have now."
KEEPER:
Rogers manages to get compression on Williams' chest wound and keep him stable.
KEEPER:
Kluwer nods. "Yeah, thanks for the help. You saw what happened. Show the uniforms where to go when they get here. The sooner we're out of here, the less a crowd we'll have to fight coming out."
Rogers whispers:
start on the other wounds
Keeper whispers to Rogers
You actually fix him up quite well.
ROGERS:
"Where's the ambulance this man needs a hospital fast!"
McCANNON:
Pat him on the shoulder as he leaves.
KEEPER:
Kluwer goes inside. The cameras and bugs, of course, record his search.
KEEPER:
Three police cars arrive in short order. Overhead you hear a news helicopter, diverted from traffic duty.
KEEPER:
An ambulance from Faith Hospital pulls up a minute later.
McCANNON:
Go about cordoning off the area, per procedure.
KEEPER:
People are coming out in droves from neighboring shops and apartments.
KEEPER:
Rogers, what are you doing?
ROGERS:
Get Carl onto the Ambulance.
ROGERS:
How stable is Carl?
KEEPER:
The EMTs hustle out with stretcher and oxygen and the rest of it and take over, unless you insist on staying with him.
McCANNON:
Direct a group of officers inside to assist Kluwer, telling them that we need to search th4e premises for evidence of drugs.
KEEPER:
He seems stable. Unless he hemorhages or something he should recover.
ROGERS:
I'll try and calm the Reverend down explain how Carl is etc.
McCANNON:
Direct the rest of them to begin dispersing crowds and setting up a stablde perimeter.
KEEPER:
The Reverend is calm enough already. But he's PISSED.
KEEPER:
A uniformed officer approaches Rogers and Ezekiel. "Gentlemen, we need you to come with us so we can take your statements, please."
KEEPER:
"Gladly, officer," says Ezekiel icily.
ROGERS:
"Certainly officer can I have a word with Lt. McCannon first though?"
McCANNON:
"Mr. Ezekiel. We're sorry for the intrusion, but an anonymous tip suggested that Mr. Williams may have been involved in an ongoing narcotics investigation."
KEEPER:
Ezekiel looks at McCannon frostily. "Tell it to my lawyer when you hear from him, Detective."
McCANNON:
"These fine officers are only here to ascertain the circumstances of his invovlement."
KEEPER:
The cop nods Rogers over to McCannon.
KEEPER:
Ezekiel goes off with the police to the precinct house.
ROGERS:
I'll wait untill the Rev has finished
KEEPER:
The ambulance drives off with Williams.
McCANNON:
Pulling aside with Rogers, "What's up?"
ROGERS:
"When Igo with the cops to give a statement who am I?"
ROGERS:
That was a wisper
McCANNON:
"Whoever you want to be. You can invent the ID later, right?"
McCANNON:
"Just make sure that your first name is Gene."
ROGERS:
"They may want to see ID"
ROGERS:
"Gene Membry"
Rogers whispers:
Get some ID in the name of DR Gene Membry sorted out then callLundquest for representation.
McCANNON:
"Don't worry about it. I'll go give my statement. Why don't you call in the ID request to Lindquist, Mr. Cullings?"
McCANNON:
"O.K. Mr. Membry."
McCANNON:
"Give me your wallet."
ROGERS:
OK
McCANNON:
Taking it and pocketing it, I go give my statement.
KEEPER:
Rogers--Membry--gets on the phone to Lundquist. More police gather. More crowds gather. The news copter hovers overhead, recording all.
