DATE: 2 June 1998 (debriefed 16 AUG
1998)
AGENTS: Mark (Brian Lundquist, DOJ), Michael (John Rogers, CIA)
FRIENDLIES: Connor Danforth, NSA
SUMMARY: Operation SANDMAN,
debriefing transcript 9: The team interviews
Officer Lemonde.
CASE STATUS: Open
ROGERS: I'm just thinking if I do miss the
only other way is to break in and toss the place, making it look like
a burgalary.
LUNDQUIST:
Yeah, or just back off and try again later.
LUNDQUIST:
Keeper, can Osborne get one of those cool police-issue lockpick guns for us?
ROGERS: Could try and force a locksmith to
do it might have a CIA contact that could get someone.
ROGERS: Or one of the above gizmos
KEEPER:
Lockpick gun, sure.
KEEPER:
It would probably be delivered in the morning.
LUNDQUIST:
I guess we should wait for that then.
ROGERS:May as well try tonight though.
LUNDQUIST:
Yeah, you might get lucky and get the door open.
LUNDQUIST:
Let's at least go check the place out.
ROGERS:Lets just give it a go shall we?
ROGERS:I'll get the opera glasses.
KEEPER:
OK. What's the plan?
KEEPER:
Lemonde lives in a fourth-floor apartment in western Queens, a couple of blocks from a long section of urban shopping malls and middle-class apartments.
LUNDQUIST:
We're going to Lemonde's house, and Rogers is gioing to flawlessly open all doors which stand in our way.
ROGERS:We'll head on over to LeMonde's appartment and have a quick check if he's in via the mobile phone's and the old order a pizza trick to check if he answers the door.
ROGERS:Then I'll gimmick the locks and presto one bugged appartment.
KEEPER:
Heh heh, okay.
KEEPER:
Night falls as you drive out. When you call again, you again get the answering machine. "This is 718-855-2223. Please leave a message." [beep!]
KEEPER:
Driving near his building you see a fairly well-lit entry, on a stoop in a tree-lined sidewalk.
KEEPER:
The front door is thick dark-brown wood. A buzzer and intercom box are set into the brick wall.
LUNDQUIST:
How many apts in the building?
KEEPER:
All the windows are thickly barred for the first three stories.
ROGERS:Lets have a look inside pretending to be looking for an appartment Mr L?
KEEPER:
It looks like a 6-floor building, four apartments per floor.
LUNDQUIST:
We could ring all the bells and just hope somebody buzzes us in out of habit...
KEEPER:
Jehovah's Witnesses... those guys always seemed to manage to get inside... ;-)
ROGERS:Is Mr Lemonde's name on one of the Buzzers?
ROGERS:lol
KEEPER:
Walking up to the front door, you see that one of the buzzers is labeled "4-D, Lemonde."
ROGERS:Right lets get Domino's on the case.
KEEPER:
Hmm?
LUNDQUIST:
Pizza guy.
LUNDQUIST:
I call them from a nearby pay phone.
ROGERS:Get spicy chicken
KEEPER:
"What is your address?"
LUNDQUIST:
Order two large pizzas to Lemonde's address, #4-D.
KEEPER:
"They'll be there in thirty minutes. Thank you for calling Dominos."
LUNDQUIST:
Okay, now we wait...
ROGERS: ... and get hungry!
KEEPER:
Time crawls along... People walk past and drive past. The night gets darker. Thirty-three minutes pass. A car drives up and parks in front of the stoop, blocking a hydrant.
KEEPER:
A young man jumps out carrying a padded red pizza-bag and jogs up the steps.
KEEPER:
He presses the buzzer and waits.
KEEPER:
You doing anything, R?
ROGERS:Going to wait and see if he gets buzzed up.
KEEPER:
He shuffles impatiently in place for about ten seconds, then buzzes again. He puts a hand on his hip in growing irritation.
KEEPER:
Finally you hear him utter an expletive, then he turns and stomps down the stairs again.
ROGERS:Right When he starts to leave run over and explain you only just got back bad traffic and tip him a couple of bucks
ROGERS: (don't want anyone phoning about bogus orders)
KEEPER:
Are you doing that, or telling Lundquist to do that, Rogers?
ROGERS:I'll do it.
ROGERS:Don't want to expose Mr Fame here
KEEPER:
(Remember to use quotes to indicate your character's speech)
KEEPER:
He looks over. "Oh, good. OK, thanks." He takes the pizza box from the bag and hands it to you.
KEEPER:
Then he takes the money and heads to his car and drives off.
LUNDQUIST:
We'll sit still for another few minutes.
KEEPER:
Pizza smells good as you wait.
ROGERS:putting the pizza back in the car for later
KEEPER:
Mmmm... confined pizza-fumes...
LUNDQUIST:
"I'm not hungry."
LUNDQUIST:
"Put those things in the trunk."
KEEPER:
OK, you wait a few minutes. Nothing new happens.
ROGERS: "Ok"
LUNDQUIST:
"All right, let's go."
ROGERS: "Shall we attempt to enter the subjects abode?"
KEEPER:
Are you trying to open the lock, JTR?
Rogers heads on over to the door and starts to try and get it open
LUNDQUIST:
Unless we're real lucky and somebody just happens to be leaving right now...
ROGERS:think good thoughts
KEEPER:
You get to the door and start feeling around in the tumblers with your picks... long seconds pass...
LUNDQUIST:
Danforth and I will stand so as to block the view of what Rodgers is doing.
KEEPER:
A couple walks past on the sidewalk, talking. The woman looks up at you for an instant, casually. They continue past.
LUNDQUIST:
We look legit.
KEEPER:
Click! Rogers gets the door open.
LUNDQUIST:
Go inside quickly, and up the stairs.
KEEPER:
The three of you trot upstairs. You emerge on the 4th floor and see a narrow hallway with beige-painted walls running in an "L" around the central stairwell. Doors are at the ends of the hall.
LUNDQUIST:
Now we'll go open Lemonde's door.
ROGERS:whisper "Lets head for 4 d"
KEEPER:
Rogers applies the lockpicks to the door main lock first, then the deadbolt... He fumbles about for the right sequence of tumblers... an agonizing few minutes pass.
LUNDQUIST:
I keep a lookout. Wouldn't want to have the good officer return right now...
LUNDQUIST:
"Come on, man. Open it."
LUNDQUIST:
(whispering)
ROGERS: "I'm trying hold on"
ROGERS:whisper of course
KEEPER:
(I can see it now. "Uhh... we're Jehovah's Witnesses. Would you like this copy of Watchtower?")
LUNDQUIST:
"We don't have all night, you know." (whisper)
KEEPER:
Rogers keeps at it. You hear conversation from another apartment nearby and a TV blaring.
KEEPER:
Another couple of minutes pass, then Rogers gets both locks open.
LUNDQUIST:
"About time!"
Rogers head in quickly ready for anything
KEEPER:
The lights are off inside the apartment, except a small flourescent light over the sink in the ktichen.
LUNDQUIST:
"You guys go in and give the place a quick once-over. Danforth, wire it up, and get the phones. I'll go downstairs and keep an eye out.
ROGERS: "Hey Mr. L just watch from the window"
KEEPER:
The place is a bit messy. Not trashed or slovenly, just bachelorly.
LUNDQUIST:
"If Lemonde returns, I'll call you guys. You bug out the back door.
KEEPER:
A sliding door opens to a tiny porch from the living room.
ROGERS:Right I'm going to quickly search any filing cabinets, desks (checking for stuff taped under draws) etc
KEEPER:
There's a card-table that seems to double as a desk, with a small file cabinet next to it.
LUNDQUIST:
I'm going to go wait downstairs, standing back away from the stairs where I can see the front door.
LUNDQUIST:
(this way, I can stall Lemonde from down here if need be).
ROGERS:OK
KEEPER:
As you go through it you don't find anything noteworthy, just the financial records of a single police officer and some old photos of his last girlfriend.
ROGERS:What about in the bedroom? Is there a PC in here?
KEEPER:
Danforth does his best to wire the place up unobtrusively.
KEEPER:
No computer.
KEEPER:
Just a TV, VCR, small stereo, and assorted magazines.
ROGERS:When he's finished can I just try and see where they are to see if he's left anything glaringly obvious just a quick visual check/
ROGERS:Flip through the Mags to see if there is any thing inside the pages
KEEPER:
Just typical inserts.
KEEPER:
Inspecting Danforth's handiwork, you do find the bugs after a couple of minutes.
ROGERS:Right any other rooms?
KEEPER:
You rearrange them a little, but neither of you is a pro at this sort of thing.
ROGERS:Is this because I know where to look or crap work on his part?
KEEPER:
Both.
ROGERS:great.
KEEPER:
No other rooms--just the main room, separated into kitchen and living room, and the bedroom.
ROGERS:Head into the bed room
KEEPER:
Danforth's a wiz at using the data, not at installing the bugs in the first place.
ROGERS:Right so we need McCannon for this then.
KEEPER:
The bedroom is about hte same. A radio & CD player, a small TV, a closet with clothes and spare uniform.
LUNDQUIST:
"Sorry, we're full... You'll have to break in."
KEEPER:
Lundquist, things are quiet downstairs.
Rogers dial Lundquist on his mobile
LUNDQUIST:
"Hello, Watergate hotel."
ROGERS: "Hello, Mr L one prob the Insects you ordered for your room may be a bit obvious"
LUNDQUIST:
I hang up and go upstairs.
ROGERS: "Do you still want to go through with them?"
ROGERS:Check all the bins in the place and rubbish bags.
KEEPER:
If Lemonde doesn't bother to look for bugs or anything unusual, he probably won't notice them.
LUNDQUIST:
"Yeah. It won't matter. We'll be done with these things so quickly that he won't have time to find them."
KEEPER:
But if he does look, odds are he'll know what to look for.
ROGERS:OK just wanted to check
LUNDQUIST:
"Btw, Danforth, keep and eye out for Lemonde."
ROGERS: "Downstairs"
KEEPER:
Danforth goes downstairs with the rest of his gear.
ROGERS: "Right thats the mushroom out of the way"
LUNDQUIST:
"We finished here? Let's get going."
ROGERS:I there anything suspicious at all in the bedroom?
KEEPER:
Nope. The bedroom is as dull as the rest of the place.
ROGERS:Have we checked all the draws cupboards / closets etc?
KEEPER:
You can rifle through them in a few minutes. Again, nothing unusual. If Lemonde is hiding anything, he's not hiding it here.
LUNDQUIST:
"Rogers? Let's go!"
ROGERS: "Right lets leave this party"
LUNDQUIST:
We collect Danforth and head out the back.
ROGERS:Shall we go home and have the pizza?
LUNDQUIST:
"Sounds good to me."
ROGERS: "Anyone else you'd like to wire for sound?"
LUNDQUIST:
"Not yet."
ROGERS: "Do you want to grab a dealer or wait untill the muscle gets here?"
LUNDQUIST:
"Not grab one... But we could stuff one in a dumpster for his friends to find..."
ROGERS: "After a Q+A session."
LUNDQUIST:
"Nah, just take one out. Nothing fancy. Just start the program to get the others scared."
ROGERS: "we'd just make it harder to grab one if we do that"
LUNDQUIST:
"True... But one guy gets popped, the others will think it's just random street crime."
LUNDQUIST:
"Tough break."
ROGERS: "OK lets get the big tough NSA agent to do it..."
KEEPER:
So, back to the safe house? Or do you have any other felonies on tap for the night? ;-)
ROGERS:We'll need to grab someone away from the church.
LUNDQUIST:
"Yeah."
LUNDQUIST:
We want to grab a DM dealer.
ROGERS: "I'm just going to check the map"
ROGERS: "How about 24th street thw block between 16th and 17th Avenues?"
LUNDQUIST:
"Works for me."
ROGERS: "I'm assuming that the incidence of the drug relates to the dealers locations?"
KEEPER:
Each point is a location where an arrest was made or where a subject of medical treatment (OD) reported using or obtaining the drug.
ROGERS:so we are likely to find a dealer there then?
KEEPER:
From the map, so far no DM "incidents
KEEPER:
have occurred on that particular stretch of street.
ROGERS: "is there any way we could contact the dealer that Barry spoke to and made his arrangement with?"
LUNDQUIST:
"We don't need him. Any dealer will do."
KEEPER:
Ack, sorry! I was lokoing at the wrong street.
KEEPER:
A bunch have occurred on 24th.
ROGERS:thought so
KEEPER:
Are you driving out there?
LUNDQUIST:
We'll troll around a bit, sure.
ROGERS: "Just want to check something first, do we have any vests at the safehouse?"
KEEPER:
Sure.
LUNDQUIST:
Sigh.
KEEPER:
Concealable, or over-the-coat flak vests?
ROGERS: "Want to take some precautions Mr. L?"
ROGERS:concealable
LUNDQUIST:
"I say we just do it." (Famous last words)
ROGERS: "Hey Mark lets risk minimise, its only 8:30ish we don't want to be seen be loads of people lets come back around 12 ish"
LUNDQUIST:
"Okay." Back to the safehouse then.
ROGERS: "With vests for safety."
KEEPER:
Done, and done. You suit up in some under-shirt vests. There are also several flak vests if you want them.
LUNDQUIST:
I guess one of those should live in the trunk of my car, at the very least.
KEEPER:
Okay.
ROGERS:Is there going to be enough room for the dealer in there?
LUNDQUIST:
"Oh yeah."
KEEPER:
The news is still having a field day with the day's shootings and with Ezekiel's dying hints of CIA involvement in the local drug trade.
KEEPER:
As reporters go over the tapes themselves, it has gotten out that the shooter was a local hood.
LUNDQUIST:
Any sign of the windbreaker guy in any of the coverage?
ROGERS:I was going to say take them but just had a thought, can I get a very fast acting sedative to knock out our lucky candidate with?
KEEPER:
It's kind of eerie: watching the tapes, played back in slow motion to focus on the shooter, you see the footage of the mystery man as he approaches Pace and then walks off.
ROGERS:Don't suppose anyone has ID'd him yet?
KEEPER:
But so far no reporters have brought up the apparent exchange that passed between them. The "exchange" itself is fairly subtle, if you aren't watching for it.
LUNDQUIST:
Okay. Can we get Osborne to try to ID this guy, using Federal databases (NCIC?) or something?
KEEPER:
The mystery man? No ID.
ROGERS:No phone calls to the police etc
LUNDQUIST:
Was there any physical contat? Did he put his hand on the shooter's arm or anything?
KEEPER:
Yes. There's so little information on him, though, that ID might prove impossible. Millions of perps out there match what description you have.
KEEPER:
There was slight physical contact when the mystery man brushed past Pace and walked away--their shoulders brushed together, that's all.
LUNDQUIST:
No fingerprints then.
KEEPER:
Right.
KEEPER:
Time passes... the news reports get repetitive. There are lots of "No Comments" from the police. Lots of denials from the CIA.
KEEPER:
Midnight creeps up.
ROGERS: "Anything on the bugs from the curch or Lemondes appartment?"
KEEPER:
Actually, a little.
KEEPER:
At the church: well into the night, around 9:00, Maddy and her grandmother are still there. Everyone else has offered their last condolences and gone home.
KEEPER:
On the hidden cameras, Officer Lemonde returns to the church office.
KEEPER:
Maddy stands up and rushes to the doorway to hug him. It's not romantic; more of a brother-sister hug.
KEEPER:
Her grandmother does not seem preturbed. After a moment Maddy steps back, now crying again, and sits down on a couch.
KEEPER:
Lemonde sits as well to talk to her. They talk in very low tones, and you only catch fragments of the conversation.
KEEPER:
Lemonde: "Maddy... ...police... ...Bato. ...is, do you?"
KEEPER:
Lemonde sits as well to talk to her. They talk in very low tones, and you only catch fragments of the conversation.
KEEPER:
(That was a repeat)
ROGERS:Can we get the gain turned up on the mics?
ROGERS:or enhanc ethe audio?
KEEPER:
Maddy: (shakes her head) "No... two days... ...call..."
LUNDQUIST:
"Danforth?"
KEEPER:
Danforth works on it.
KEEPER:
Lemonde: "...sure? Rev... ...harmed. ...danger."
KEEPER:
Maddy: (shakes her head again) "... don't know. I don't know. He was always afraid, but Reverend Ezekiel said it would be okay."
KEEPER:
Danforth gives a thumbs-up.
LUNDQUIST:
Good man. "Now get to work on the parts we've already taped."
KEEPER:
Lemonde: "I know he did, Maddy. And I wish he had listened to me. You know I tried to get him to be more careful."
ROGERS: "Good work Danforth."
KEEPER:
Maddy: "I know. I know you did. But he was so sure, and he was so angry."
KEEPER:
Lemonde: "Listen, Maddy. We need to keep things quiet for a few days. A lot of people are gonna want to get you on TV and back up the Reverend's story. But that won't lead anywhere."
KEEPER:
Lemonde: "You keep quiet about it. Let me keep looking into it. The only way we'll see justice is if I can get some real evidence." He sighs. "Bato was all we had."
KEEPER:
Maddy: "But I thought you..."
KEEPER:
Lemonde: "I've seen them, but I just about got caught. And one black cop won't turn the table on the CIA, or whoever they are."
KEEPER:
Maddy: (nods silently)
KEEPER:
Lemonde: "I better go. We need to keep things looking normal. Don't let anyone get you to talk about it. Not before I say so."
KEEPER:
Maddy: "I won't, Roy."
KEEPER:
Lemonde stands and nods to the grandmother, who smiles. He walks out.
KEEPER:
Maddy and her grandmother don't discuss the conversation after that. They go over some files for a few minutes, then they leave.
LUNDQUIST:
"I got an idea... Show up there, talk to him, then expose our own bugs and say 'see, they're on to you' and try to get him to talk to us."
ROGERS: "Good plan we don't need to bug him now we knbow he's on the side of the angles"
ROGERS: "Hey Danforth, time to go bug hunting"
LUNDQUIST:
"Well, I'm still not 100% sure, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt."
KEEPER:
"Bug hunting?"
ROGERS:whoops here come the hounds ;-)
ROGERS: "Were going to go and hunt and find our bugs"
KEEPER:
Danforth gripes and grumbles.
LUNDQUIST:
Show up at Lemonde's place, say "we need to talk, but not here..." Point out the bugs, and take him someplace to question him.
KEEPER:
Do you drive back over to Lemonde's place?
ROGERS: "Hey its all part of a days work"
LUNDQUIST:
Yeah.
ROGERS: "Yeah we can put the stuff for grabbing a dealer in the boot / trunk"
LUNDQUIST:
That
LUNDQUIST:
"That would be trunk, Rogers."
KEEPER:
You drive over. When you get there, you see the lights on in his apartment window. It's around 10:00.
ROGERS:boot over here :-)
ROGERS: "Hey Mr. L you talk to him he dosen't trust CIA agents better coming from a DoJ guy"
LUNDQUIST:
"Yeah, I think he'll mistrust all of us... Which is why pointing out the bugs will give us a little credibility, I hope."
ROGERS: "Not that he should know I'm CIA"
LUNDQUIST:
"No, you'll be an associate of mine."
ROGERS: "I'll just go with the Doctor routine we used in the hospital"
LUNDQUIST:
"Good enough."
KEEPER:
You're in the car outside his building.
KEEPER:
Is Danforth with you?
KEEPER:
Or is he listening to the bugs? Or both?
LUNDQUIST:
Yeah, he can drive.
ROGERS:bugs on record
LUNDQUIST:
We'll just go upstairs. "Rogers, can you unlock that front door again? Might make more of an impression on him if we just show up at his apt. door."
ROGERS: "I'll try should be eaiser as I've popped this lock before"
ROGERS: ;-)
KEEPER:
You'd think that... but you try the tumblers for a couple of minutes with no immediate result.
ROGERS:kepp trying with the guys covering me
LUNDQUIST:
"Jeez, come on... You did it before..." ;-)
KEEPER:
You try for five minutes.. you just can't get the knack of it this time. Cars pass on the street below.
ROGERS:whispered "Shall I keep trying or ring the Buzzer?"
LUNDQUIST:
"I don't think you're going to get it... Let's ring."
KEEPER:
BZZZT. A moment later you hear Lemonde's voice on the speaker. "Yes?"
LUNDQUIST:
"Hi there. Officer Lemonde?"
ROGERS:I'm getting a pad out and writing on it THIS ROOM MAY BE BUGGED TALK ABOUT NOTHING WHILE WE CHECK
ROGERS:to show to Lemonde when we get upstairs
KEEPER:
Lemonde: "Yes. Who is there?"
LUNDQUIST:
"This is Lieutenant Johnson from the 31st. I have something I need to speak to you about, if you wouldn't mind."
KEEPER:
"Can this wait for the morning? I've had a long day."
LUNDQUIST:
"Yeah, I'm sorry about that. No, it really can't wait."
KEEPER:
There's silence for a moment. Then: "I'll come down."
LUNDQUIST:
"All right."
KEEPER:
Four minutes later, through the wooden door's window, you see Lemonde step into the front hall.
KEEPER:
Four minutes later, through the wooden door's window, you see Lemonde step into the front hall.
KEEPER:
He's wearing jeans and a plain grey jogging-suit jacket, baggy and just right for covering a pistol.
LUNDQUIST:
We both keep our hands in plain sight at all times.
KEEPER:
He glances through the door window at you, then he pulls the front door open. He remains in the doorway. "Well?"
LUNDQUIST:
I pull out a note pad and write, NOT SAFE TO TALK HERE--BUGS. "We had to talk to you about the Thomas case."
LUNDQUIST:
I show him my DOJ ID too.
KEEPER:
He glances instinctively at each of your hands again before he looks at the paper. He stares at it for a few seconds, then he looks at Lundquist's ID. Then he looks expectantly at Rogers.
LUNDQUIST:
I look very sincere.
LUNDQUIST:
"This is Sergeant Lewis."
LUNDQUIST:
"He's with me."
KEEPER:
"I see. Sergeant, are you also from the 31st?" He looks expectantly at Rogers again.
ROGERS: "Yes sir I am."
KEEPER:
He steps out of the doorway and lets it close behind him.
KEEPER:
"All right. I was just going to get some coffee. Care to come with me?"
LUNDQUIST:
Look around, as if nervous. "Sure, that sounds good."
LUNDQUIST:
"You know a good place around here?
KEEPER:
"Sure. Barney's, just a couple of blocks from here." He starts walking down the stairs.
ROGERS: "Can we go somewhere you don't usually go sir?"
LUNDQUIST:
"Just to play it safe."
KEEPER:
He looks around for a second. "Sure. We'll try the new Starbucks down the street. Come with me."
LUNDQUIST:
We'll follow him.
KEEPER:
He walks down the street, then takes an immediate turn and keeps walking.
KEEPER:
He mutters, "If you're afraid of bugs, I can't exactly announce where I'm really going to go, can I?"
KEEPER:
He walks onward, then turns another corner and heads for a small bar.
KEEPER:
He steps inside. The place is not crowded. He sits at a corner booth and waits for you.
LUNDQUIST:
Follow and sit down.
KEEPER:
He looks from one of you to the other. "Well?"
LUNDQUIST:
"Mr Lemonde, my real name is Lundquist, and this is Mr Rogers."
LUNDQUIST:
"We have a lot of questions, we have reason to believe you may have the answers."
KEEPER:
"What questions?"
LUNDQUIST:
"Reverend Ezekiel frequently claimed to know of the involvement of federal agencies in drug trafficking in Harlem."
LUNDQUIST:
"We are part of an ongoing, multijurisdictional investigation into such claims."
LUNDQUIST:
"The Reverend's killing has attracted a lot of attention. There are a number of things about it which are very fishy."
KEEPER:
He shrugs. "I heard a local gangster did it."
LUNDQUIST:
"It's more complicated than that, and you know it. What we need to know is if he had any evidence to support his claims."
Lundquist whispers to DG_Keeper:
I'm going to be in "cross-examination" mode here... I want to see what I can get from his reactions, and try to put him at ease at the same time...
LUNDQUIST:
"You're the beat cop for that area. You know as much about criminal activity there as anybody. What can you tell us?"
KEEPER:
"Evidence to support his claims? Not that I ever heard. Ezekiel was a firebrand."
LUNDQUIST:
"Yeah, that he was... But the fact of the matter is, there is something going on here."
LUNDQUIST:
"Ezekiel's murder doesn't add up. He wasn't particularly effective in hurting the local dealers, so why would they whack him?"
KEEPER:
He shrugs. "Maybe they didn't want more DEA in the neighborhood. Maybe Ezekiel hurt their feelings. Maybe the shooter was just high as hell and wasn't going to take it any more. Ask him, not me."
LUNDQUIST:
"Okay, next question. Why have they suddenly become interested in you? Have you done anything high-profile, to attract attention to yourself?"
KEEPER:
"Why have who become interested in me?"
LUNDQUIST:
"These mysterious men-behind-the-dealers. The ones Ezekiel called the CIA."
KEEPER:
"I haven't seen them around here. Have you?"
LUNDQUIST:
"There was a cable TV truck parked in front of your building for two hours today. Well, we checked with the company, and they didn't service anyone on your block. In fact, they said they didn't even have a truck in that area at all."
LUNDQUIST:
"We think they were tossing your place, and maybe putting in a few bugs. It's their standard MO."
ROGERS: "As we said earlier your appartment may be bugged, we can check if you want?"
KEEPER:
He leans back and considers for a moment. "I don't think that will be necessary. But I'll check it out myself. So, how long have you been doing surveillance on me?"
LUNDQUIST:
"We're not surveiling you. We caught onto you when their truck spent all that time in front of your place."
LUNDQUIST:
"More importantly, you're in a unique position to know something of what's going on in Harfleur, so we thought we'd better have a word with you."
KEEPER:
He smiles. "So you've been tracking the local repair vans all over town and taking notes on where they stop?"
LUNDQUIST:
(I say all of this very convincingly) :-)
LUNDQUIST:
"I'm not at liberty to discuss the particulars of that; it's part of an ongoing investigation, as I'm sure you'll understand. But you've definitely gotten somebody's attention."
KEEPER:
He sighs and scowls. "Look. I don't appreciate having anybody snoop around and take notes on me. I don't know what Ezekiel was talking about. If he knew something that got those gangsters nervous, then my professional advice would be that you ought to talk to them about it."
ROGERS: "We will."
LUNDQUIST:
"Okay, let's move on. What about Carl Williams? He too is the victim of a shooting that doesn't add up."
LUNDQUIST:
"This cop that shot him," (can't remember his name...), "can you tell us anything about him?"
KEEPER:
"I believe Internal Affairs is investigating that situation."
LUNDQUIST:
"Right. And you and I both know that it will take forever and nothing will come of it."
KEEPER:
"I don't know. My job is complicated enough already, but it won't involve investigating Carl Williams' shooting. Now, is there anything I can help you gentlemen with?"
LUNDQUIST:
"We know that there's something rotten in Harfleur. We'd like to put a stop to it. To do that, we need information. Anything you might tell us could be helpful."
LUNDQUIST:
"If you think of anything, anything at all, I'd appreciate it if you give me a call." I pass him my card.
KEEPER:
"You want to know what's rotten in Harfleur? Take a look around. See how many kids have a daddy at home. See how many people are hooked on shit that takes all their money and time. See how many jobs there are. Harfleur's got problems, all right. If you're real worried about them, you can start in better ways than spying on me."
KEEPER:
He takes the card and pockets it, then he stands.
LUNDQUIST:
"That's not what we're talking about, and you know it. You think of anything else, give me a call."
KEEPER:
He looks at each of you again and nods shortly before he walks off.
ROGERS: "Lets go get a dealer." whispered
LUNDQUIST:
"Sounds good to me."
ROGERS:We've got the stuff in the car right?
LUNDQUIST:
(My guess is, when Lemonde finds Danforth's stuff all over his apt, he'll give us a call... We're the only friends he has left...)
